A lot of people have written off the movie or are bandwagoning onto the whitewashing outcry because of the casting. While I agree that the lack of prominent roles for non-white actors in Hollywood needs to change, many don't seem willing to judge this film on its own merit.

From an objective standpoint, I can see what's happening here. I'm not happy about it, but I understand the logic of it. I think it's flawed logic and I still think it needs to change, but I understand the intent.

Honestly, I've seen people crap over movies here for lesser reasons.

Valid complaint yes, but all the hate for that seems to overshadow anything and everything positive that the film looks like it could be. That feels unfair.

I'm Chinese-Canadian and yes, Scarlett is the furthest thing from Japanese/Asian and my first reaction was WTF/. The only way this is remotely passes the first smell test is because the Major is an android and with makeup Scarlett does look (enough) the part. Ideally they would have cast an Asian actress and we'd have a new pioneering star on our hands.

However, with the multi-million dollar budget and American production company, the bottom line is that this film simply doesn't get made unless a recognizable-to-white-America actress is starring. Scarlett has the film resume (Under the Skin, Lucy) to fit the character. Anime/cyberpunk is a relatively unknown genre outside of Asia. Seeing that no Japanese company had stepped up to create a live-action GITS on this scale, was this film better off not being made at all?
