Dreamworks/Paramount's Ghost In The Shell

At first I didn't know what the problem was, until I read that they're keeping her Japanese name...that's awkward. Might as well give a different name ala The Departed. So this is totally a different situation from what I thought it was..

They'll probably say she's half Asian..but we all know she's not. Nor does she have that eurasian look that Chloe Bennet, Oliva Munn, or Kristen Kruek all have.

^the press release just calls her the major no name given
Based on the internationally-acclaimed sci-fi property, “GHOST IN THE SHELL” follows the Major, a special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9. Devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, Section 9 is faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka Robotic’s advancements in cyber technology.

She looks great I don't see the problem with this. Especially in this day and age when it's very likely a black woman is going to be Valkrie in the Thor movie.

LOL at some of these comments..... Seriously...... If you don't like the casting or feel offended by it then don't go see the movie.

For me, Perfect casting choice. SJ Looks great! Looks just like Motoko!
I just hope they really do a good live action adaption after some of the other anime to live action adaptions. I so want this to succeed so we can see more quality anime to live action adaptions!

Ppl only get mad when they get changed to a white person.

I understand ppl getting mad over stuff like That eygpt movie or that guy playing El Barbie. But a movie about a cyborg isn't something to be mad over. Ppl online just want to be upset over something

:whatever:

Those two situations aren't the same at all. Changing a minority character to a white character is far more egregious than a white character being changed to a minority. There are so very little minority characters in mainstream media in the first place...

Seriously, what is it with Hollywood trying to whitewash everything?

Justin Chatwin as Goku in "DragonBall Evolution", Kristin Kruek as Chun Li in "Legend of Chun Li", Sean Faris as Kyo in "King of Fighters"

It just keeps getting worse and worse.

Rooney Mara as Tiger Lily in "Pan". Emma Stone as Allison Ng in "Aloha".

And Nat Wolff as Light in upcoming "Death Note".

I won't watch this in theaters. And I hope it flops badly.

How are they not the same? There has been a major influx of race bending that white washing in the past couple of years. More race bending has happened.

So it's ok to cry and moan about white washing but perfectly fine to race bend characters? lol.

Don't be hypocritical about this.

And how is it more more egregious? If the Ghost In The Shell movie takes place in the US, then there's no problem, and if it takes place in Japan then it's the same as a black woman playing Valkyrie in Asgard who's real name is Brunnhilde.

"but but it's fictional Asgard in a fiction movie" Well this is fictional future Japan with cyborgs passing as humans.

I'm generally a purist and feel they should've gotten a Nordic looking women to play Valkyrie and a blonde, blue eyed guy for Human Torch but there's no reason a switchable, synthetic body needs to look like only one particular race.

None.

The human character, on the other hand, should look Japanese if the movie is set in Japan.

If say Kerry Washington was cast in the lead would there be more "she's playing a cyborg" talk or because it's easy to say "whitewashing" ppl are complaining?

I think this comicbook artist sums it up pretty nicely from a perspective I'd never thought about.

It's funny because white comic-book fans b****ed and moaned to high heaven about Human Torch being black, Heimdall being black, there being minority people in Asgard, the small possibility Zendaya could have been Mary Jane - there's others I'm forgetting.

But when minority people speak up about their comicbook characters we're automatically shut down by those same people as overreacting. Yea, sure.

And I hope it flops even worse than last year's "Fantastic Four".

It is not the same thing. If there were a comparable amount of Hollywood movies with minority leads as there are with white leads you might have had a point. But the fact is that there aren't, not even close.

changing a main character and changing side characters. difference

I don't disagree about the hypocrisy (though it swings both ways) but that guy is wrong.

Watch the original anime movie. The Japanes characters had no problem using cyborg bodies that looked European.

People have a right to complain about white washed Japanese characters who are supposed to be 100% human. Not the major.

Even if it was a main character, it's still not the same thing nor is it a big issue. 99% of all white fictional characters are only white simply due to the time and era in which they were all created. Their whiteness doesn't define them as a character nor is it pertinent to their plotlines or character stories.

It's 2016, there's nothing that says they have to stay white when being adapted to tv or move in this day and age.

If this guys right than my idea of the whole film being in Japanese and America would have to read subtitles is the route to go

This is entertaining me today! I appreciate LOL I really do!

This is hilarious. People are acting like this is a Japanese film. It isn't. It is US film, being filmed in English for US audiences first and foremost. This isn't like a Japanese company is making this for Japanese audiences.

People seem annoyed that Hollywood has money to make movies that other places just can't.

It is the exact same thing, people just like to argue otherwise because it destroys their argument. It is okay to pick the best person for the role, as long as they aren't white. And I am not even white. But the reaction to these situation laugh.

Yes, because that's happening all the time here in the US. It's always funny that people say "The best actor got the job" and that actor always turns out to be a white male 99% of the time. You can't have your head that far up your butt can you? Let's face it, there are mediocre as hell white actors and actresses that are rewarded on a consistent basis with movies and franchises for doing mediocre work. Whereas minority actors and actresses who are doing that same stuff are barely able to scratch the surface.

Also, this movie wouldn't be having this issue if the story itself still wasn't taking place in Japan, as far as we know. Now they've yet again, centered a story full of white people in another foreign culture without centering the people from that culture in the movie.

Reward how? See this is the thing about franchises with actresses like Scarjo. They aren't rewards. They have to ask them. They want them. And why? Because they feel like they have an actual chance to make money because Scarlett Johansson is one of the most relevant action actors or actresses in the world. If this film was viable as a Japanese lead flick, in Japanese, this would have been made by a Japanese production company. Again, this is exactly why none of these films get made.

Now please explain to me why a Hollywood movie has to care about these things? This movie was started at Disney and I believe shifted to Paramount. The major production companies are based in Hollywood. Why do they not have the right to make money here?
