Droping Amazing Spider-Man

I think the planets are alined! :cwink:

But yeah; dont you think the Michelinie/McFarlane/Larsen stuff was a blast?

I miss those days. :csad:

That and the DeMatteis SSM eras are some of my favorites, ridiculously voluptuous MJ and all.

You both are spot on. The 80's ASM was a both a visual and storytelling treat and the DeMatties SSM era had some of the best Spidey stories of all time.

I never saw the appeal. Couldn't relate to him like so many say they do. Always saw him as a bit of a putz.

I don't relate to him either. I do, however, find the character endearing.

That's the thing, I've never needed to relate to a character to enjoy the stories, but for me, Spidey's always been meh.

I never really related to him the sense that I never felt like a nerd or social outcast or whatever. I remember watching the cartoon and reading the comics and wanting to be him. He always seemed a lot more grounded than the other heroes.

I could kind of relate to him. I wasn't picked on or anything, but I liked that he used his brain as much as his powers to solve problems. That's kinda... not true anymore, though. :o

It depends on who's writing him. Like, Bendis, Slott, Guggenheim or Gale, not so much. But JMS used to show that part of Pete.

I miss JMS. :(

Dropped Amazing before One More Day finished. Got Ultimate Spidey, Spider-Girl and the Spectacular Spidey cartoon to show me what Spider-man should be.

Okay, maybe I should have posted this on my earlier thread about fan letters, but tomorrow when I go to the comic store, I'll be taking Amazing off my list for the first time in years. I was really hoping the BMD would overcome the atrocity of OMD that was it's genesis, but it simply hasn't. I'm really sad to be leaving my favorite superhero, but paying for a book I don't enjoy reading anymore just isn't worth it. Apologies to Dan Slott, I was hoping the humor that made She-Hulk so much fun would reinvigorate AMS. It hasn't, and I'm voting with my pocketbook. I hope AMS returns to readability someday in the near future.

Good for you.

I've never related to Spider-man myself either, but that wasnt what drew me to him. Peter Parker is such an average dude, he's not a millionaire like Tony stark, a war hero like Steve Rogers, or a big time lawyer like Matt Murdock, he's just an average likeable guy. And his intelligence is the icing on the cake, he used his brains more than his brawn to defeat people. I mean look at his track record, Spider-man has fought and beaten EVERYBODY. He's fought every marvel hero and won, and he's fought their villains too, dr.doom, magneto, juggernaut, sabertooth, he's beaten them all, just an average guy. That to me is the sign of a great hero.

im surprised to hear somebody on the forum say that considering how b%*ching i used to hear about his run.

I didn't love every story he told. I don't know if there's a writer out there that I can make that claim about (okay, BKV), but I really dug a lot of his ideas. Plus, he's a natural storyteller.

I've decided as of this week to drop it. Well, last week technically. The only comic out that I usually get was ASM, and I didnt feel like walking up there in my lunchbreak to get just the one so i thought I'd leave it till friday. Then friday came and I found I didnt really care whether Freak got his ass handed to him despite gummed up webshooters. So sadly, very sadly, when I go up there this week I'm going to ask the staff to take it off my pull list...

I realised I was only giving BND a chance because of keeping an unbroken line of ASM and hoping that the next arc wouldnt be another pathetic new villain thats a shadow of an existing one (for freak, see Scorpion who got mutated then blamed Jameson for it and sought him out only to fight spidey and lose and be forever depressed about his freakish appearance; for maniac see... well, any goblin), or that Peter would get a job in Harry's coffee bean so he could afford to at least share an apartment with someone, or that the DB would get rid of this moron running it and drop the poor comedic attempts, or that the editorial funnies would end.

I just dont see it happening. I can see why the marriage could go. But I fail to see why all this other crap had to be conjured up in its wake. A hell of a lot that has happened to Peter since he got married that didnt involve his marriage or even MJ's opinion has caused him to grow and mature. But all evidence to the contrary in BND I'm afraid. Its like he's done a million things and seen a million things and had to make tought choices and take responsibility for ten years (cos ALLEDGEDLY he is actually 25-26 in this new era) - but has nothing to show for it in terms of his character. Why not attempt to become a forensic investigator like his MC2 counterpart? Perfect combo really for a superhero. No more listening to the police band for ole Peter. But no, instead they create someone who already has that job and then dont even acknowledge his working for Tony Stark for a time recently, nor his time working for Tricorp when he has that interview in BND #1.

Sorry... carried away there

The last time I remember JMS using Peter's smarts to good effect was the Digger arc.

Did that come after the New Avengers arc? Because Pete displayed a higher than average intelligence in that one, too.

In the end, nobody cares.

You guys are high. You're telling me the Michelinie/ McFarlane days were "mediocre"?

BND is ok, but i'd prefer ANY of the late 80's/early 90's stuff over the current stuff anytime. Even Larsen's run. At least that era stood on it's own merits and wasnt scambling to recapture past glories...:meanie:

I couldn't stand the fact that Larson couldn't go two panels without having Spider-man's mas Blink or wince. I understand the need to have Peter express emotion despite the mask, but doing it ever other panel just looks silly.

I didn't remember that one. The Digger arc was, like, JMS' third arc on the series.

I liked the mullett and super tight jeans that Larson gave Pete.
