Duncan Jones' Warcraft

Also said about Watchmen which depending on your take was either a success or failure. It was about as close as possible to the original as you can get and people still dispised it (the ending particularly).

I suspect Warcraft will hew closer to LOTR attempt if only because they are similar enough (fantasy element) to successfully translate to film.

Which is weird since the ending of the Watchmen movie was actually an IMPROVEMENT in comparison to the comics, imo.

I thought the movie ending was more appropriate too but purists are gonna hate.

Watchmen just didn't work. It was an visual/stylistic action movie when it should have been anything but. Just all around bad from a creative standpoint. Thank you Snyder for your fantastic vision...

Anyhow, I believe WoW can be adapted, but I'm just not sure how you differentiate it. I have read the suggestions in the thread, but I still am not seeing it. I do not remember the lore too much, just remember owning the AI with my magical Paladins in Warcraft II. Do you commence with this human vs Orc struggle? Where exactly do you go? Anyone remember the storyline of the original games? I wasn't really paying attention too closely at the time. I remember Arthas' arc in Frozen Throne, but that wasn't 1990's.

Watchmen worked just fine to me. The comics is next to impossible to adapt and Snyder did the best job possible.

I still really like Watchmen, that's my $0.02.

As for Warcraft, I think there are elements from the game they can use as themes or plot drivers without having to re-hash actual stories from the games. Such elements are things like heroic "monsters" (i.e. the Horde), the use of undead armies in a medieval fantasy setting (a surprisingly under-mined premise in the entire fantasy film genre, IMO), corruptible heroes and steampunk technology.

^Didn't they say that about LOTR? That's probably how it's gonna be done.

Man, this is different from Lord of the Rings. Lord of the Rings is popular classic book series that main trilogy has a beginning, middle, and end. It has a memorable fixed group of characters. Warcraft doesn't really have any of that.

I'd also contend that yes Watchmen is still unfilmable.

I actually enjoy Snyder's Watchmen it's one of the few movies he made I enjoyed.

Isn't this really just a platform for Jones to tell a fantasy story? Just set in the the world of Warcraft (hmm...) and do any story you want.

I see Warcraft as the ability to tell a LOTR-type story while updating some of the cringing anachronisms present in the LOTR universe (racialism, the near-absence of women, cultural chauvinism). It has a ton of potential, but runs the risk of being as stupid as other video game adaptations.

The movie doesn't have to follow the games exactly. As long as Jones gets the basics right and doesn't screw up the characterizations, then he can tell a new and original story that's set in the Warcraft world.

I think he may incorporate a couple subtle in-jokes for the fans here and there also. Not like a blatant Leeroy Jenkins, but like grinding or something.

Jones is apparently a fan himself, so I wouldn't be surprised if he throws in subtle references/jokes for the fans.

Legendary Moving Forward With ‘Warcraft;’ Paula Patton, Colin Farrell In The Mix

EXCLUSIVE: Legendary Pictures and Atlas Entertainment are casting up Warcraft, the movie adaptation of the hit Blizzard videogame World Of Warcraft that Duncan Jones will direct. I’m told that Paula Patton is negotiating for a lead role, and that another lead has been offered to Colin Farrell. I’m not sure that Farrell is going to make a deal–sources said it’s 50/50–and Jones is testing other actors for the major roles. Production will begin in January and Charles Leavitt wrote the script.

The role playing game takes place in a medieval-like setting where players control avatars that take on gryphons, dragons, zombies, werewolves and elves. Time travel and alien worlds are also part of the mix. The project is one of Legendary’s biggest and was supposed to be made at Warner Bros. Since Thomas Tull’s financing/production company moved over to Universal Pictures, I expect the film to be located there as well.

Patton is the lead in the upcoming Fox Searchlight film Baggage Claim and is coming off the hits 2 Guns and Mission:Impossible–Ghost Protocol. Farrell stars with Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson in the upcoming Disney Oscar season film Saving Mr. Banks and then the Akiva Goldsman-directed adaptation of the Marc Helprin novel Winter’s Tale. Both are repped by CAA and Patton is managed by Medavoy Management’s Brian Medavoy. Stay tuned.

Those are interesting choices, especially Paula Patton. She's actually one of my top choices to potentially play Wonder Woman.

I saw Paula Patton and thought Paula Deen... who would be good as Princess Theradras.

I love Paula. With Collin, he's only good as his director (with In Bruge and 7 Psychopaths).

nothing against Farell. but just how cheap is this guy? isnt he like BO poison?

Collin is a fading star who has made some bad decisions in his career. Some good too of course.

Paula as a night elf? Bring it.

he needs to make a choice. do only serious movies and try to get as much money as possible to be very rich. or go full on movie star. he can not do both. its been 10 years.

Yeah. Collin's like Ryan Reynolds where he's is NOT in the position like Michael Fassbender who can jump back and forth seamlessly.

Farrell used to be one of the it dudes in Hollywood. He can still nab a decent role here and there but they're not clamoring for his ass.

Which makes this project such a promising opportunity for him. He's a really good actor who doesn't get the credit that he should. Also, plenty of actors jump back an forth between big budget blockbuster and more serious drama. Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman, Cate Blanchett, and Karl Urban are just a few such actors. Paula Patton, she's just awesome.
