Duncan Jones' Warcraft

2015 is giving 2012 a run for its money for one mega year in terms of huge blockbuster adaptations.

Do people still care about this game?

Me, I'd be more interested for Jones' involvement than anything else, and that includes the source material.

Never really played WoW that much, except for a trial run a few years ago. Can't lie, though. I'm excited.

It makes sense that WB would set this for 2015. They need more big-budget and geeky movies to compete with Disney. Their JL and Warcraft will be up against TA2 and Episode 7, not to mention Pirates 5. Also, this just made Comic-Con '14 more insane.

Imagine this on the big screen! Legendary's going to do the scenery justice.

Edit: Oh yeah, and I don't think Depp will be able to do this with Pirates 5 coming out that same year. Plus, I'm not really sure if I want him in this movie.

I think this movie needs to be in CGI animation. The world of warcraft game had some great cinematic trailers and i always thought it would look cool as a movie. The game is huge and i doubt you can tell its story in just one movie, it needs to become a huge franchise of movies. If they can replicate the way blizzard made their cinematic trailers and go a step further then i think it would be an awesome sight to see this movie in 3D 48frames CGI animation on the big screen.

Nah, I'm way more excited to see what they do with this in live-action since we've seen the CGI animation already. And yeah, I bet they're planning to launch a franchise off of this. I'm betting more races and more areas of the world will be explored in the subsequent films.

A run for its money would suggest that 2015 seems equally fantastic, but it's looking like 2015 is going to blow 2012 out of the water.

While 82 had sequels and adaptations, a major part of that year's legendary status is the number of new properties it spawned.

In that regard, I actually think this year has a far better chance of being comparable with the new marvel films, the hobbit but then also surprising number of new things like Oblivion, Pacific Rim and Elysium.

I'm not so sure about that especially as I have my doubts about all of those movies even making it onto 2015. So it's still very much in the air.

Fair enough. For the time being though, the movies are still aiming for a 2015 release and it genuinely seems like it will be a much better year than 2012 was imo.

I have a feeling the reason why WB is pushing for a 2015 release for this is because Justice League won't make it's '15 deadline and they need to fill in the gap for that and the lack of a Hobbit film.

I give no f**k for WoW or for the fact that my friends lost countless hours palying it some years back, but Duncan Jones? I'm in.

Meh, I had hoped for something else for Jones next project. Has never played WoW and has little to no interest about it. But who knows, maybe this will be a great fantasy film, exciting even for non fans. Hope so.

Dammit Jones, you're finally "ready" to take on a major franchise picture, and you choose this? Boo.

I had actually hoped and was excited for his Ian Fleming bio-pic as his next one.

I hope they start from the very beginning of the franchise, W: O&H.

My thing with Wow/Warcraft is that I'm sure they're great experiences and fun to play, but out of all of the Blizzard franchises, I think Warcraft wears its influences on its sleeve*. But it's too apparent and derivative, like most 'sword and magic' fantasies, but since it was a game, a different medium than books or movies, then at the time (1994) it was fine.

But to do a film adaptation now seems redundant; it would be like doing an adaptation of a Pitfall movie. Then again, Warcraft has crafted a rich enough mythos and world building that you can probably get a great story out of it. I still think Diablo is different enough to make a great film franchise out of. I think 'classic fantasy' is harder to do these days. Either it's too Tolken like, or they all feature the same beings likes trolls, elves, etc. But if you got a good enough writer, it doesn't matter. Like with Game of Thrones.

That being said, Duncan will make us all proud. And if Legendary/WB is pulling the same thing with Del Toro or Nolan, they'll try to keep Duncan in-house. Who knows? Maybe Duncan can finally get his Blade Runner-esq film 'Mute' made with WB/Legendary!

*Zelda was directly influenced by Ridley Scott's 'Legend', but Ninetendo did enough to give Zelda it's own identity and mythology that you couldn't see the influence right away. Like with George Lucas taking inspirations from Akira Kurosawa and pulp serials with Star Wars.

It would have been relevant around 2005/2006 when WoW was in its prime.

So, who do we think will be cast in this movie?

I remember about a week ago or so, Duncan tweeted asking who people think are actors that Hollywood keeps trying (and failing) to push as an action star. :funny:

So the gauntlet was thrown down ages ago: Can you make a proper MOVIE of a video game. Ive always said its possible. Got to DO it now! ;)
