Dwayne "the rock" Johnson to be in a DC movie. Can you smell what WB is cooking?

I dunno. I'd kind of like an actual black guy as John Stewart. There are plenty of really great black actors and it would be nice to see an actual black man play a black superhero.

Dude ! I've been pushing for Karl Urban as Hal ! Totally with you there.

What about Ackles as Guy Gardner ? He's basically just Dean Winchester with a Power Ring - an arrogant, stubborn, macho hot-head, who's not all that bright but still a hero underneath.

I reckon they should keep Mark Strong as Sinestro, but if not Mads would be a good choice. What about Robert Knepper (from Prison Break) that guy just radiates evil?

But back to the Rock. I agree with the guy who suggests that a Black actor would be the best choice to portray John, and there are so many great actors out there who could carry it off.

Having said that, if the Rock did get the role, it would certainly raise the profile of GL .
He was the highest grossing actor of 2013, with his four films totalling $1.3 billion. Now of course not all of that is solely due to his presence, (as half of that came from FnF 6), but he certainly does have star power to effectively promote the film (whether it's a solo GL film, an ensemble GL film or even a JL film).

I know that the Rock has been mentioned in the same sentence as several Superman villains.
To be honest, the Rock would be a better John Stewart than Doomsday or Darkseid, because Doomsday has zero charm and personality (he's a bit like the Kaiju in Pacific Rim) which is what makes him scary (kind of like the Fury, from Marvel's Captain Britain). Darkseid on the other hand has an enormous personality, and while John Byrne gave Darkseid quite a bit of charm, he also has to project staggering intellect.

Neither of these characters are well suited to the Rock's acting range. John is a tough, straightforward guy with a good heart, well that's how I remember him. IMO that suits the Rock much better than either a monstrous, mindless brute, or an evil genius.

So we'll just have to wait and see how it all plays out. Regardless, the Rock's presence will certainly help whatever film he does become a part of.

Still sorry that it's not going to be Lobo, now that role would suit the Rock perfectly, IMO.

After seeing Pacific Rim, Idris Elba will make the best John Stewart.

But then again, Warner Brothers are in charge and as we know, they make some strange casting choices :woot:

I'd mark out if he was Stewart. I also wouldn't mind him as one of thos barbaric Thanagarian's that were mentioned in the MoS prequel comic.

Oh man! I hadn't even thought of that! :wow:

Great suggestion.

However, it'll probably a while before they start exploring the DCU cosmos.

Hopefully, if GOTG is successful, its sooner rather than later.

The Rock is half-black and half-Samoan. Since he is half-black, he IS a black actor. Therefore, he would count as an "actual black actor playing John Stewart." This whole notion that he somehow doesn't count simply because he doesn't LOOK like how some people THINK that a "black actor" should look is kind of disturbing to me.

Sorry didn't mean to imply it had never been done before. The call for diversity in the JLA just seems better to use an existing black character instead of transforming another one. Besides I really like Jon Stewart and would rather see someone else as him. I can see this causing issues down the road also.

Heimdal wasn't black in myth or the comics BTW so he doesn't really count to my point.

So we're going back to the old Jim Crowe days where any black blood counts as black. personally if the Rock were the black character in the group and passed off as black I would find that offensive. They could always make Stewart not black I suppose but then the diversity seekers would be disappointed at a perfect opportunity missed

The Rock is a big name and a box office draw and if they plan on rebooting Green Lantern with John Stewart, the Rock is the way to go. He's cheaper than Will Smith and younger than Denzel Washington.

He was Roadblock in the Last GI Joe movie and as I recall, Roadblock was a black character in the comics and the cartoon. There wasn't any outrage when he played Roadblock. Where was the outrage when he was cast as Roadblock?

The Black cinema website "Shadow and Act" considers The Rock to be black.

Batmannerism expressed some of the same concerns as you about The Rock not being black enough, but even he knows that if the Rock was cast as John Stewart, that the WB would automatically greenlight a reboot movie because of the Rock's enormous popularity.

I still remember when the first trailer came out for Green Lantern... I remember half of the comments were "I thought GL was black" and how many people said they weren't going to see it because it wasn't the black GL.

I guess WB/DC had no idea how much impact the Justice League cartoon really had on the general audience...

I'm really hoping that The Rock is John Stewart. People will definitely go see it.

As far as Karl Urban as Hal Jordan, that would be amazing. I saw him as Batman... but he could do Hal justice as well.

Yeah, I think Karl could make a good Hal.

I still want Meth Damon for Guy.

True, but as of late, he seems to be fairing well in ensemble cast films like GI-Joe and The Fast and the Furious. He would probably be a good fit as an older Cyborg character in a Justice League ensemble. This is leading me to believe that this Man of Steel sequel will be set some time in the future as to why all these older actors are being approached.

Agreed. As of right now.....Rock as been doing well while as a supporting character in ensemble film compared to him being the lead.

Having Rock be a part of the Superman/Batman film is a great move. I just hope he is not cast as Lex. I would be okay with it....but I would rather have an actor who can bring some more depth to Lex like a Phoenix, Denzel, McConaghey, Pitt etc....

.

I'm guessing that has more to do with those comments coming from non-reading sheeple.

Not reading comics doesn't make their opinions any less valid. It's actually quite the opposite. These "non-reading sheeple" are the ones who decide if a big budget movie succeeds or fails, not us. We are in an extremely small minority. I wish that more people read comics too, but they don't & I don't think myself above them because of it. In the 50+ years that Hal has existed, he's never made a big impact w/non comic readers.

They didn't. When the trailers first started airing for GL, I had white people asking me why they turned GL white. I knew then the kind of impact that show'd had on the GA. I've seen accounts on this forum from people from other countries who also thought GL was black. WB shot themselves in the foot by using Hal to begin with. I also vowed not to see it until it was on HBO(Wish I'd just vowed never to see it. Was free but that's 2hours I'll never get back) and predicted it would flop. Using Hal before that show existed would still have been risky, but it would have made some kind of sense. Using him after was just stupid.

Yep. I'd prefer Idris, but the Rock is cool too & he also puts butts in the seats. WWE would promote the film also because of his relationship w/them. This could be HUGE :)

What if The Rock is playing:

He does look the part for John Henry Irons, just putting it out there. Thoughts?

He does look the part. I liked his Sans-cape &"S"versions on the DCAU, but I don't have much desire to see him in live action again. Very unlikely anyway at this point IMO. Has DC done anything w/him in the new 52?

Yeah actually, he was in the first story-arc of New 52 Action Comics aka "Superman and the Men of Steel"

I could see The Rock as Cyborg/Steel, but honestly I'm kinda hoping he's playing a more recognized & established character.

Cyborg I see a younger person playing though. If the rumors are true of a Teen Titans live acton show for CW, it seems very likely Cyborg will be in that. Not that it completely matters if he is or not, he could end up in the film as well as the tv series with a different actor.

I know this was posted in another thread, but it's interesting a few months back Rock tweeted a pic and one of the hashtags was "JohnStewartcanstillwhupSupermans***"

Maybe it doesn't mean anything. But hey... I guess I'd just like to see him revive the GL franchise.

Woah, did I miss something? Where did that live action Teen Titans show rumor come from? I never heard of it
