The opening weekend shouldn't say much about legs. The second weekend is a much better indicator. A sequel to a beloved property has a very real chance of being front loaded. It is usually the case actually.
The spread from Friday to Sunday can give useful info too, the main box office guys have written on the subject. Of course not as much as the 2nd weekend drop which is the go to indicator. But because we have a directly comparable release in the first film which came out at the same time, for eg if Avengers smashes the Friday figure and stayed ahead on the Saturday and Sunday but by a quickly declining percentage beat per day it could mean more frontloading even than expected on a first sequel to a hugely successful film. Whereas if it stayed above by a smaller but similar pecentage on all 3 days it would suggest it could have a much better run. I hope AoU is ahead on the Sunday figure vs TA.
Now this makes more sense. They were calling that a bit too early. Especially considering this is a Friday night during the school year.
This is true, but it is still quite the accomplishment.
It's a good sign coming from them as the studios themselves are usually conservative with predictions for their own product.
