Seems like the opening day is similar to the first film given the excess it enjoyed from midnights. If that holds the rest of the weekend will give a big indication to the film's legs.
The opening weekend shouldn't say much about legs. The second weekend is a much better indicator. A sequel to a beloved property has a very real chance of being front loaded. It is usually the case actually.

The spread from Friday to Sunday can give useful info too, the main box office guys have written on the subject. Of course not as much as the 2nd weekend drop which is the go to indicator. But because we have a directly comparable release in the first film which came out at the same time, for eg if Avengers smashes the Friday figure and stayed ahead on the Saturday and Sunday but by a quickly declining percentage beat per day it could mean more frontloading even than expected on a first sequel to a hugely successful film. Whereas if it stayed above by a smaller but similar pecentage on all 3 days it would suggest it could have a much better run. I hope AoU is ahead on the Sunday figure vs TA.

Update, 4:50PM: Deadline has received a new updated set of industry estimates showing Disney/Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron clocking toward the highest opening single day of all-time with $94M-$97M, blowing away previous champ 2011’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II which made $91.07M. That figure includes the $27.6M from Thursday night shows. Opening FSS for Ultron still speeding toward an all-time bow. We’re hearing $217M-$220M.

That's more like it!! if they're going to go that close to $100m might as well go for that extra push!

Damn. That's big money! Not that I expected any less, though.:woot:

Those new estimates are extremely good news. Variety has an od possibly as high as 98M.

It would be good as it would be higher than the first film even after stripping out midnights. Really can't wait for this weekend number.

100 mil opening day? Yaooozaaaa

I can't really get that excited because it's not REALLY all in just 1 day. This isn't a knock on this movie specifically but just the way Hollywood has changed in general regarding midnight screenings which ain't midnights anymore. Not when you can watch the movie the day before it's scheduled to open at 7pm like I did last night.

If that 98M number holds up, I can see the week end unfolding like this: 27.6M PRE + 70.5M FRI + 76.5M SAT + 57.5 SUN = 232.1M ow

I'm still not sure how the fight will/would affect the saturday numbers but even if it does it should be balanced by a smaller than usual decrease on Sunday. This is the hypothesis I based these projections off with a moderate increase (compared to the "previewless" Friday numbers) on Saturday and a softer sunday drop using Spider-Man 3's ow as a rough template.

The cinemas should do a double bill for MCU fight fans!

Now this makes more sense. They were calling that a bit too early. Especially considering this is a Friday night during the school year.

This is true, but it is still quite the accomplishment.

Friday Update #2: Sources are reporting very preliminary numbers for Friday based on matinee business, while Disney itself has updated that they expect to top $200 million and are eyeing the weekend record. That's a fantastic sign coming from the most official source possible.
Based on these early reports, suggesting an opening day of $90 million or more (which could be a record if it tops the final Harry Potter's $91 million first day), BoxOffice is currently projecting an opening weekend around $220-225 million.

It's a good sign coming from them as the studios themselves are usually conservative with predictions for their own product.

Just finished watching it. Started a little slow but when it got going, the action was a ride! I just wish these freakin people that sat beside me would have gotten pimp slapped! They wouldn't shut up during the movie and the people that work there were afraid to tell them to shut up.

Holy cow :hmr:

Those still aren't the official estimates but obviously the film is doing massive numbers.

That's not all that impressive against the first film which had a lower midnight boost so would have beaten AoU on the day. Assuming the figure holds up that is.

I remember when Raimi's Spider-man came out and made $100M opening weekend, it was unprecedented. Now...
