I'm listening to Dark Phoenix's Tragedy right now in fact...

That song and the Phoenix Rises song are the best.

Only the fact he did such great music for Pee-wee's Big Adventure, Beetlejuice, Burton's Batman movies, Dick Tracy, Army of Darkness, Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Mission Impossible, Sleepy Hollow, Big Fish, Chicago, Men in Black movies, Planet of the Apes remake, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride, basically all the Burton movies. He even did the theme songs for Weird Science and Desperate Housewives.

All those plus the first 2 Spiderman movies.

Don't forget The Simpsons!

Spider-Man 2 and X-Men The Last Stand are my most favorite scores.

I know it's probably severly old news, but I just learned that Danny Elfman will not be returning to score SM3, but will be replaced with composer Christopher Young.

First off, does anyone know what this falling out between Elfman and Raimi resulted from? And what are some examples of Young's previous work? Do you think he'll be up to par?

THIS IS NOT GOOD.
elfman's score is what really drives thease movies.
if we don't get the same theme, that's not a good sign.

hey

here's a cool quote from Chris Young on Spider-Man 3 (people should be excited with the last thing he says)

..............................

In 2007 you will score “Spider-Man 3”, which I am very excited about. How did you get that gig?

It happened for a number of reasons. I have worked with Sam (Raimi) on one of his earlier movies called “The Gift”; the only reason why I could do that was because Danny Elfman wasn’t available. He actually has a cameo in that movie, so that shows you that he was supposed to score the film. But he couldn’t do it and he recommended me. Actually his editor Bob Murawski is a tremendous fan of my music, so I guess he temped parts of “The Gift” with it.
Anyway, since “Evil Dead” I knew that Sam thinks just like I think. I always said: “I’ve got to work with this guy! I don’t care how and when it happens, but I have got to work with him.” Although he was already in pre-production of the first “Spider-Man” movie and he didn’t attend the recording session of “The Gift”, we had a great time with that movie and he was happy with my music. Then I was called to replace the music in two scenes of “Spider-Man 2” and he was very happy with what I delivered. So when he and Danny decided not to continue working together on the third movie, I got the call. I am just overwhelmed with ecstasy and honored that I am going to be on board and I am hoping that it will be my best score ever!

...............

you can read the whole interview here:

I hope Young will do good job.

But my favorites are Williams, Elfman and Hanz Zimmer.

Its a pitty that Elfman has gone he gave the movie that extra level of depth and made it that extra bit cooler.

Also as well as the changing of the tunes, i thought Sam was giving him less and less time to get the songs ready and it put to much pressure on him?

meh @ Chris young.....

elfman was ok.... but i dont want his shadow to score it

his opeing theme was so kickass. and the end theme of each movie, with spidey swinging around...AMAZING.

plus, there were the 3 batman notes in it. great stuff.

If you even consider that other guy over Elfman then you must be on drugs.
Then I must be smoking a Spliff, because I'd consider almost anyone over Elfman.:o

The studio owns all of the music, including all of Elfmans stuff. They can use a bit of the best from 1 and 2 and Young can put his own spin on the rest.

I always thought the score for part 1 was on the weak side anyway. Part 2 was great though. It will be nice to have a new take. I'm sure the score will be Elfanesque, with a new spin. It'll be fine.

Edit:
And Hulk and The Simpsons.

Army of Darkness was scored by Joseph LaDuca. Elfman did one part, though.

Don't get me wrong, I love his stuff.

Apparently, Elfman didn't feel like Raimi was giving him enough freedom. Elfman wanted to play around with the music a bit, but Raimi was very attached to the music he had already created and didn't want him to change it so much. Elfman has had some pretty nasty things to say about Raimi, too.

As much as I love Elfman's music, he does seem to come off as something of a jerk. I believe the problem he had with Raimi is the same problem that caused his falling out with Tim Burton years ago. I think that says something about his attitude. Maybe he just doesn't really know his place on the filmmaking ladder. Who knows.

As for Christopher Young, I'm a little concerned. Not that I think he's a bad composer, but different composers have different sounds. And I like Elfman's sound for Spider-Man. It IS Spider-Man to me. I know they're still gonna use Elfman's themes, but I'm just not sure the new music will have the same feel.

EDIT:

Some more insight...

Quoted from Chud.com

Today the junket for The Corpse Bride junket was held in Toronto, at the Toronto Film Festival. The junket in general was short on news - Tim Burton is taking a break, Helena Bonham Carter has a few things in the hopper and Johnny Depp is still knee-deep in Captain Jack Sparrow (his mouth was full of gold teeth). But Danny Elfman dropped a surprise on me when I asked him whether Sam Raimi had told him which villains for whom to consider themes. He’s not doing Spider-Man 3, he told me. I asked why.

Elfman: Spider-Man 2 was a miserable experience.

Q: Why? Was it too fast or –

Elfman: It’s a complicated thing.

Q: Why was it complicated?

Elfman: My connection to Sam got completely severed. As far as I’m concerned, he went to sleep and somebody put a pod next to him and when he awoke, he wasn’t the same person I’ve known for a decade.

Q: Will you work with him again?

Elfman: No. He went from right there, number 2 on my list of favorite directors, to the last – to the exact opposite of everything I look for in a film experience. Everything I could do on Spider-Man 1 I couldn’t do on Spider-Man 2. He got so intensely attached to the temp music, I couldn’t even adapt my own music. I couldn’t get close enough to me.

It’s the first time I’ve ever walked from a director in twenty years, and hopefully the last time. He became intolerable. I’ve been on some heavy duty films, so to say that it had to be pretty bad. I have been in war zones you wouldn’t believe in 55 films. But this is the first time I’ve said, I’ve had it. It’s just not worth it. I would rather go back to waiting tables than to do Spider-Man 2 again.
Yeah I realized that...because SM2's score was pretty bad...it lacked epic music imo and kept the same old boring violin music for the emotional scenes...and those bits were from the first one!!...He should gave elfman trust..hes one of the best composers ever, he knows what hes doing

I wish they could gt Hans zimmer for scoring...the films darker so Im sure hed do great...he did
The da vinci code and batman begins

i dont wanna hear copy/paste of elfmans work.... !!!!

The HULK soundtrack was amazing..... It could workout.... it makes sense being that this film is supposed to be "darker".....

hulk soundtrack was cool. as are most scores elfman does.

Elfman's best work was back in the early 90's. His recent scores have sucked pretty bad. He got into this minimalist stage where he doesn't use thematic element. Listen to the Hulk soundtrack and you'll see what I mean.

His work on Charlie and the Chocolate factory was even more rediculous. And not much of anything people would listen to outside the movie.

The best sountrack he ever wrote was Nightmare Before Christmas, a close second would be Dick Tracy.

I secretly caused that fight between Sam Raimi and Danny Elfman, lol. :D

I'm sure you did since everyone here already knows you're actually Danny Elfman. ;)

If I was, I'd burn all my music sheets and recording studio, then throw out my instruments...and give up composing forever.:p
