Episode 14 - "Distractions" - Discussion Thread 2/5/07

Heaven forbid a show has some actual character development.

OH and i greatly beg to differ, the episode before last one had more than enough to fill in one episode.

what character development? that Peter is passionate? that Nathan is cautious? that Nikki's dead sister is inhabiting her body? that Matt hears thoughts? that the Haitian has a tender side? that Hiro is nerdy and naive? all of this has been established. again, i'm all for character development; we've seen good examples of it in the first 11 episodes. these last two have been coasting. honestly, an entire episode of Hiro running around and hiding in a garage from some unnecessarily mysterious men. a shrink who isn't serving any purpose. DL phasing into a cell to say, "damn, baby! it's hard doing it by myself!"

look, obviously they've chopped the story/episodes up from what they were originally going to be. for example, the online comic said, "meet Hana in january 22nd's episode". we didn't. we've seen previews that have yet come to pass. someone has been very busy in the editing room and the last two shows have suffered because of it.

Maybe they are trying to get more miliage out of what they have because the show has been more popular than they expected.

Well, honestly, from the very beginning Heroes moved Matt to episode 2 (3?), despite his role in the previews of the show. So the editing and moving around intros is kinda part and parcel with the show... It happens too often for me to care anymore.

As for the last episode, while Hiro's storyline may not be doing all that everyone wanted it to (and to me, while entertaining, his storyline hasn't been extremely consequential since he started plugging Nissan Versa), there were several other characters involved in the show.

While you may not consider the introduction of the Shrink as a major plot point, keep in mind it was her INTRODUCTION, and we don't know how important she will be, but it's pretty clear that Nikki's fate is tied to her from here on out. I too felt that the DL in prison scene could have been better developed, but also keep in mind that Micah has just introduced some serious moral implications to the family, in fact THE superhero conundrum: Do I use my powers for personal gain? And with the parenting and desperation on top of that, that's one of the deepest themes on the show right now.

To say nothing of Peter's interaction with Claude, Claire persuing her birth mother, the introduction of The Haitian as, y'know, not mute... and Matt Parkman's career going down in flames as he learns to use his powers to lie, instead of just find out the truth.

With all these characters, just like it's always been, we get little steps from a lot of characters instead of large story chunks from a single character or two. This isn't 24... Peter/Hiro/your fav isn't Jack Bauer, and the show simply doesn't revolve around them...

The only real complaint I'm hearing is that Hiro's storyline doesn't fit what they expected, not knowing that having a uberrich father is a much straighter course to Linderman's sword than going up to Linderman's front door and knocking. And, from what I could tell, the whole parking lot thing was supposed to be kind of funny, keeping you guessing and then: "Oh, it's just his father."
