Escape from New York (Remake)

If you "HAD" to recast Plisskin...do you like the choice of Gerard Butler???

  • Yes I like him...not sure if he's my top choice but...I like it! :)

  • No he's not right for the role at all. :(

  • Not bad but...I'm not sure yet...need to give it more time.

Eh, did my comment get erased or did it not post?....

Like I said before, not that I'm on Kurt's side or anything, but can we blame him for being mad? If our own characters were being recasted, I guess I'd be mad, too.

i can't blame him. Snake Plissken is probably his most famous character...but i was hoping he would've been a little more.......humble.

i know he's only human but i don't respect pride as much as i respect modesty.

No I don't blame him and it's cool he's not afraid to speak his mind but at the same time...you look cooler if it doesn't bother you. When I say I want a big budget treatment that doesn't mean big F/X neccessarily either. Just better F/X, better production values, etc...I watched the original last night on DVD and it seemed kind of worn out the film. Is their an HD-DVD of EFNY??

It seems Kurt's more afraid that a remake would overshadow his original character, considering 3/4 of youngsters out there won't know him as the original snake, but would see Gerard as Plissken. An understandable concern, but if he is so assured by the great essence of his own character he shouldn't be worried about being overshadowed. I'd rather see him pay attention to getting his career back on track (I can see Grindhouse doing this) rather than pondering on an old role

well said, i like Kurt. he used to be one of my favorite actors and he has a lot of potential. i hope he can use his age as an advantage to get back into the swing of things.

Kurt Blasts Escape Remake
The original Snake Plissken ain't happy.
by Stax

US, March 22, 2007 - The news that New Line Cinema is remaking Escape From New York -- and have cast 300 Gerard Butler as Snake Plissken -- hasn't exactly met with universal approval from many fans of the original film. And one of those fans is the man who starred in it, Kurt Russell.

Russell fumed about the remake to Entertainment Weekly, especially the casting of a Scottish actor to succeed him as one-eyed badass Snake Plissken. "I will say that when I was told who was going to play Snake Plissken, my initial reaction was 'Oh, man!' [Russell winces]. I do think that character was quintessentially one thing. And that is, American," the actor advised EW.com.

To Russell, his Escape From New York anti-hero wasn't just any other role. "People come up to me and say, 'You played Snake Plissken.' I didn't play Snake Plissken, I created him!"

He is also adamantly against the idea of making a cameo or playing any other role in it. "(Expletive) that! I am Snake Plissken! It's like Sean Connery always watching someone else do their version of Bond. I think one of the things, for instance, about Escape From New York that appealed to me was that it wasn't a special effects extravaganza. It's a quiet, dark world and it revolved around watching the behavior of this one guy. He's a fascinating character. In fact, he's the most complex character I've ever played."

Kurt, you rock sir. At least Russell still cares....Carpenter is just a sell out now and he makes no bones about it so oddly I still respect him. Weird innit?

^ No he's not. It's just a damn movie like he says and when he made the first one he wasn't attempting to make a cult classic. He did what he could with the budget he had.

The budget they had was fine. The movie looks fine. I think this will most likely end up as a special effects, no plot movie.

I think Kurt makes great points...and that mother****er kicks an unbelievable amount of ass

But I still don't see why a Scott can't play Snake, I mean he is going to be acting right? Its not like he can't act american

And I think this movie could ether bust or be awesome, ether way it is still gunna happen

We already know this one is going to even have more of a plot than the original by going deeper into the back story that "WAS" talked about in the original 2 films. The events in KC, the bank robbery, etc...Of course the background and events will be updated to today's time since they really can't do a period piece taking place in 1997 at least not with the WTC. I hope it's far enough into the future that there's some "NEW" building propped up in NY prior to it being turned into a prison where Snake can land. That glider sequence is too cool not to redo.

I'm behind Kurt 100%,but I'd still see the remake. Snake is Kurts claim to stardom, and he wants it be that way not someone else's stepping stone. For that I will agree with him. Is snake that of an Iconic figure, nah, not to the younger ppl and maybe to some of us who grew up with it.
Far as the American thing, ehh, I somewhat agree, but he should of all ppl know hollywood don't do things like that..Look at Constantine, main character was supposed to be blonde, and british. yet, they got keanue reeves, inwhich he did a great job(in hind sight, they should of got that guy from casino roayle,he would of pulled that role off just as good).
Im glad to see kurt speak out,hes entitled to speak his mind.I like kurt hes had some good movies, and some bad.Ya don't see many actors speak their minds on something like this, its usually political stuff.
I wont blame Butler for doing the role, hes goin where the money is. Just makes ya think, 'will they ever do a Mad Max remake'

I agree and a remake will not take away anything that Snake did. It's a different time. However I think The Thing is still his best film with Carpenter even over EFNY and Tombstone.

Edit: BTW I'd love to see a Mad Max remake of the first 2 films and then ignore Thunderdome. I could see Colin in that role but I'm sure it's probably another 10 years down the line. Maybe sooner.

There's another remake of recent foreign sci-fi/horror film that's gonna rock the world when it's announced. :) That's all I'm gonna say.

Yeah yeah yeah.....the remake of "The Fog" supposedly had more of a plot, and went "deeper" too. Boy, what a huge improvement over the original! Hey gang, let's just SHOW everything, let's explain EVERYTHING and leave absolutely ZERO to the imagination!

Whatever.

The Fog (remake) sucked. It also has nothing to do with this remake. It's not even on the same scale or level. The original film was not on the same level as Escape from NY either...nor were the stars or the cult status. Not comparable. You can't just take one remake and assume all other remakes will be given the same treatment. Usually they suck that doesn't mean they all will. Also until you see the script or movie for this EFNY remake we dont' need to assume there not going to leave room for imagination. However...that's what the movies are for. To show you the imagination of the director. If you want to create your own movie go ahead and use "YOUR" imagination or read a damn book.

I hate it when ppl do that:csad:

^ Hunter it's pretty obvious what I'm talking about. I just won't come out and say it. You'll know soon enough but if you think about it...it's clear.

I'm not the worlds best guessing game player,my only other guess is that Nigthwatch thingy b/c i am sure they wouldn't remake Pans Labyrinth.
