Escape from New York (Remake)

If you "HAD" to recast Plisskin...do you like the choice of Gerard Butler???

  • Yes I like him...not sure if he's my top choice but...I like it! :)

  • No he's not right for the role at all. :(

  • Not bad but...I'm not sure yet...need to give it more time.

i think we can all agree that we don't want to see too much of Snake's past but judging by the comments from Carpenter we might just get what we don't want...i hope not though.

I don't want to see him from his childhood but I do want to see some or all of the details or events mentioned in Wikpedia that we didn't get to see in the first film. I want all of those details expanded on a bit, I want to see the set up of what he does to get caught...and how he gets caught. I want to hear more about how his wife was killed, etc...I think it's great 300 did so well so they stick with an R rating for the sequel.

I think 100% for sure we can all agree this must be rated R. Period. If this is rated PG-13 I'll be really pissed. I don't want another watered down Riddick film. Will I still see it if it's PG-13...probably but I think 300 proved an R rating can succeed and they don't need to try to please everyone.

i just read carpenter's suicide girls intreview and the way it's sounding is that it's almost all up to the writer and director. john carpenter said about all he can do is read the script and tell them wether or not it fits with Snake's character. he sounds like an old man that just wants to enjoy his life now...i don't think he'll be putting his foot down if they start going crazy with the ideas. he even told Rob Zombie to make Halloween 'his own' so he pretty much told Zombie to do whatever the hell he wants.

^ Good. Do you want to see the same exact movie frame for frame? Not me. I'd like to see a new interpretation of the basic premise. Keep the core elements the same...make the rest better.

well, i'm hoping Carpenter will have a say so that counts on how they should portray Snake. i know they're gonna keep Snake the same anti-hero type guy but you never know what other kind of things they'll make Snake do. undoubtedly they'll be giving him a love interest.

i don't want Escape to be like Psycho or anything at all...i just want them to make sure Carpenter okay's the script before they do anything else.

Probably my favorite thing about the film.

Why do we need to stop things like Date Movie? Yeah I thought it sucked too however why should your tastes or my tastes be forced upon the general public by a meaningless and selfish boycott. What a waste of time and energy it is to boycott a film when it's much easier to not buy a ticket. LOL Boycotts are useless on this level. Not buying a ticket is much more powerful considering if enough people dont' buy tickets that film won't be touched again. What do you care if they make Date Movie 2. Hell that's good news you know why? Because when a film we do like comes out a portion of people will go see DAte Movie 2 and free up some seats for you and me for the movie we want to watch. :)

Totally agree AD

I hated Date Movie, but the mother****er grossed what 50 mill at the box office, and at my video store at least rents very well, people do like these movies, it doesn't mean they are good, or that everyone likes them, but that means some people do

I talk to people all the time that say gone in 60 seconds or what not is there favorite movie ever, I think it is very subpar, but i suppose alright, doesn't mean it should never have been made

Boycotting films is a terrible idea btw Cyrus, I know you think your opinion in movies is the opinion in movies, but A there are people in this world, i know its hard to believe, but they can't sit through Bad Education, they need a 80 minute DTV steven segal movie, cause all they want is something to kill time, while they live out there fantasy of being a kung fu cop or whatever

I'm watching the movie right now, and I forgot what an awesome score it had

Just watched the original EFNY again tonight. Great flick but with today's film technology and a big budget there's tons of room for improvement. They got a solid screenwriter and a good character actor for something like this...now all they need is a director. The story is what carries this film so if they can improve on it and improve on everything else it's gonna be a wild film. Must be rated R again. Can't say that enough.

Personally, I didn't think Escape From N.Y. was all that good of a film. I mean, the Snake character was awesome, but other than that...Meh.

Exactly. We must have and R Rating.

Imagine this ending:

What if another team went in there to rescue the President first and they were all captured and/or killed and Snake had to go in and lead the survivors out. Then when he gets to the wall...the US Police Force help everyone escape over the wall but leave Snake there.

End Credits

i think they should change the way they get out. i think them having to climb over a wall is very anti-climactic. once again, one of the many things that was bogged down by the limitations of the early 80's.

"My other main involvement in this project is to extend my hand and have a check placed in it...After 30 odd years of being in the ****ing business, its nice to not have to do anything and get paid."

That quote is f'ing awesome :D

That'd be a terrible ending.

I love it. When it first came out it was the coolest thing. Visually it still stands up pretty well in today's time but the editing is dated and the F/X are obviously done on the cheap. The fight sequences were also pretty hoakey. Still it's awesome to me. I think they could really beef up the story, improve on the editing, they have a decent budget for sure, and just update everything to today's time all the way around. He's obviously not a Nam Vet so he'll be special forces or something. I'm real curious how he's gonna get on the Island. No WTC to land on which was one of the coolest parts of the film. They can't have it take place in 97 again either. I guess set it far enough into the future so there's a new building at ground zero for him to land on. Maybe 2050. The sub thing in LA could have been cool but that was done on the cheap as well. Too corny. Night chute drop is the only thing I can imagine or landing the glider in central park. I also want to see more of the Crazies. I want as a member of the audience to feel the tension and fear when he's going into NY and walking the streets. It should maintain the tone of the first film but be even more frightening. Perhaps we might even see a scene of Snake getting stuck down in the sewers at night. He he.

Another option for "Duke": Wesley Snipes

I think he'd play the role perfect and could also be a physical challenge for Snake. That would be awesome.

...as for Brain: Christian Slater maybe?

I see we're leaving it open for sequels.

New Line bought a franchise not the rights to make one film. Of course. I could just see him hanging his head after all that. The only question is how would he defuse the bombs in his neck. Maybe find an x-ray somewhere on the island or maybe he takes care of that before trying to escape just in case.

I never could figure out why in the first film Snake just didn't turn the glider around. He had 22 hours to find a doctors office with X-Rays. He had weapons and he could force someone to zap his neck to neutralize the charges. :)

I still wish they'd make a movie showing us how he became the Governments most hated man, and all that cool stuff.

Kurt Blasts Escape Remake
The original Snake Plissken ain't happy.
by Stax

US, March 22, 2007 - The news that New Line Cinema is remaking Escape From New York -- and have cast 300 Gerard Butler as Snake Plissken -- hasn't exactly met with universal approval from many fans of the original film. And one of those fans is the man who starred in it, Kurt Russell.

Russell fumed about the remake to Entertainment Weekly, especially the casting of a Scottish actor to succeed him as one-eyed badass Snake Plissken. "I will say that when I was told who was going to play Snake Plissken, my initial reaction was 'Oh, man!' [Russell winces]. I do think that character was quintessentially one thing. And that is, American," the actor advised EW.com.

To Russell, his Escape From New York anti-hero wasn't just any other role. "People come up to me and say, 'You played Snake Plissken.' I didn't play Snake Plissken, I created him!"

He is also adamantly against the idea of making a cameo or playing any other role in it. "(Expletive) that! I am Snake Plissken! It's like Sean Connery always watching someone else do their version of Bond. I think one of the things, for instance, about Escape From New York that appealed to me was that it wasn't a special effects extravaganza. It's a quiet, dark world and it revolved around watching the behavior of this one guy. He's a fascinating character. In fact, he's the most complex character I've ever played."

A truly humble man

okay....either you don't know what "humble" means or that was a sarcastic remark. i can't tell...

...i'm not surprised that Kurt is against it. it's the role that made him famous, which is probably why he compared himself to Connery (though i don't think he deserves to be). i can understand that Snake Plissken won't be solely his character anymore, but i guess he doesn't wanna share the character that made him famous with anyone else.

If you couldn't tell it's probably a safe bet you shouldn't of replied?

Yeah it is like Connery watching the other Bonds but the other Bonds did well. Casino Royale is awesome. Kurt is one of my favorite actors probably in the top 5 on my list and I understand how he feels but things move on. The World keeps turning. He's dead right about his comment about it being a dark world and it revolved around watching the behavior of this one guy. That's what the remake should be about too. If anything this remake will bring more attention to the original. Also when I say updated F/X I don't want to see an F/X bonanza with CGI. It should be all practical F/X except for the environment and scenery which shoul be updated instead of using models and miniatures. Kurt tried to do a remake of the character and Escape from LA was horrible. He already tried to redo it and he was given a lousy script. If he's so protective of this character he created why the hell did he allow that crap to come to fruitiion. Escape from LA was a great idea with the Earthquake and all but after that it was garbage. Surfing w/Pete Fonda, the basketball game, the whole Bruce Campell thing. C'mon Kurt I love ya but if you're gonna be protective of the character why did Escape from La come to be. LOL Also about his "american" comment. I'm sure this remake will be set much further in the future than 1997. Who's to say Gerard Butler's character isn't an American. I mean he's an actor who specializes in playing characters he is NOT. I'm pretty sure The Hulk wasn't Austrailian. Besides aren't we all Americans and don't people from with backgrounds from other Countries and cultures fight in our armed forces? Gerard might just be playing an American.
