Escape from New York (Remake)

If you "HAD" to recast Plisskin...do you like the choice of Gerard Butler???

  • Yes I like him...not sure if he's my top choice but...I like it! :)

  • No he's not right for the role at all. :(

  • Not bad but...I'm not sure yet...need to give it more time.

so wiseman got the gig? that sucks. he's an awful director.

In all honesty, I wasnt that enthused about them remaking this anyway. I hope you all enjoy your dumb blue filtered sanitised PG-13 souless remake...I think Ill go and watch the original thanks.......

Let's hope not but knowing Hollywood they'll probably try and trim the series down that way.

i think ive become a fan of len.... always great movies.

Len got the job?

i guess we can expect Snake to have superhuman powers then...

John McClane didn't hvae super powers and Len did a good job on Live Free or Die Hard.

he didn't have any super powers...but he still seemed superhuman. you don't see that many cops driving cars into helicopters, using their limitless endurance to survive a car dropping down an elevator shaft, or safely landing after jumping from a jet...

...that's good action and all but it's totally unbelievable. i haven't seen all of Live Free or Die Hard, from what i've seen it seems pretty good, but that doesn't mean Len is right for this job. all i can imagine is action packed superhuman, pg-13 Snake Plissken. hopefully he'll prove me wrong and put some REAL substance into the film to go along with the flashy action scenes.

The Die Hard movies are all about the suspension of disbelief. Just the fact that he's been caught in the middle of something of that level three times isn't believable hence suspension of disbelief.

Besides it's an action movie.

Snake was beaten a bit in NEW YORK but walked away pretty much undamaged, same went for L.A. So the same rules apply here.

I hate Underworld but Die Hard 4 was cool.

When is this coming out? Next year?

true but when i watch a movie i need some verisimilitude. i never want actions stars to feel invulnerable...which is what McClane felt like in LFoDH. that's why i liked Casino Royale so much...because even though he was Bond, he wasn't perfect. he pretty much died in that movie. that movie gave me a sense that Bond was constant in real danger. i can't say that about LFoDH.

Besides it's an action movie.
so was Casino Royale, but they didn't make Bond feel like a superhuman. there were parts in that movie that made me uneasy because Bond genuinely felt like he was in mortal danger.

yes, let's watch the same stuff we've been seeing instead of injecting something new into the franchise...:whatever: from what i've seen...Die Hard is a good, but forgettable flick. i just think Snake deserves better than that. if Len can't deliver that then great...but if the Underworld movies along with Live Free or Die Hard are anything to judge by then Escape from New York will be a flashy action extravaganza with the minimum amount of required substance for the story to "work".

Die Hard was pretty damn fun and it was only a tad bit of editing to make it even better and R-Rated. It wouldn't take much. The Herrier scene was ******ed though. Edit that part out for God's sake. LOL

Im glad Len got the job so far i havent hated any of his films.

I hope Wiseman's Escape from New York actually has some action in it.

I watched the original recently, and was shocked by the fact that there is so little action, and yet it's considered an action movie.

In fairness though you acknowledged that you haven't seen the movie and while yes the action is very big McClane is very much a beaten down character by the final frame.

They are working with a great concept and character here but the movie itself was hardly something above the likes of Lethal Weapon and such from that same era...it's a really fun but cartoonish lead anti-hero in a sci fi setting.

Yeah i noticed that to when i bought the SE, i'd never seen the movie before and was kinda disappointed in it but i guess the budget was pretty small.

First, comparing Casino Royale to an Escape movie just doesn't work. What applies to one movie, doesn't apply to another. The Bond movies prior Bond walked away pretty much undamaged. It wasn't until the last few movies, that he actually really took to any injury.

Second, see LForDH first before judging it because as Hunter Rider said Bruce comes out damaged. Bruce was damaged in each and every Die Hard movie in fact. McClane's come close to dying more than his share and each every Die Hard movie. The first film his feet were completely damaged by walking on glass and let's not forget jumping off the roof before the explosion. Two, he takes a heavy beating and manages to stop a plane. Three, he manages to dodge a broken dam but not without suffering his share of injuries and suffering from a constant headache. There are more examples in the movies themselves, that I can't recall at the moment. In LForDH, he's beaten and breaks his arm, but pushes himself to keep on going. He's damaged in each and every film.

Three, Snake has been damaged in his regard but to the biggest part he walks out undamaged. Snake is always going to be Snake plain and simple. Again, different series style, different approach.

Fourth, judging off of prior movies doesn't always mean we're going to get the same exact thing as before. Again different movies, different approaches.

That's what I've been saying since I started this thread. The budget really showed in the film but Russell and Carpenter did such a great job they overcame it. Escape from LA was such a waste of film. They'll clearly have the budget to show alot more before he get's arrested, and have a much more convincing action and more of them. But there was nothing cooler them him just wandering around the dark streets of NY alone and all the people in the sewers started coming out. That scene screamed I need more money.LOL It was still great though. I think everyone is gonna be quite surprised by this film and Gears of War.

Len Wisemen directing is great.
I never rwally like him since I am not a fan of the Underworld films, but Live Free or Die Hard is my #1 film of the summer, so I'm glad.

$7m I believe. Escape from LA cost $40-50m, but it doesn't look much more expensive.

Every character in LFoDH was superhuman, McClane, Mai, the henchmen guy. This made it easier to accept McClane being able to survive so much.

I personally loved LFoDH, and think that Len is a very capable director.

I enjoy Escape from LA, but unlike the original, you can't take it remotely seriously. It's entirely a tongue-in-cheek sequel that basically parodies both the first movie and action films in general... not so sure if that's what anybody expected or WANTED out of a sequel to EFNY.

Great score though. I still miss Shirley Walker.

I really really wanted the same tone as the original with a bigger budget. It's like they reinvented each scene from the original, added a few new things, and then mixed too much tongue and cheek garbage. Bad move by Carpenter. The original should have had a sequel soone but EFNY wasn't a box office hit.

in all fairness i finished watching LFoDH and my opinion has barely changed. yes, he's beat up but at no point did i ever feel that he was genuinely on the verge of death. after he took down the jet i was expecting him to come out with a broken finger or SOMETHING but he practically got up and walked away with no sign of heavy damage.
i know he gets shot twice in the end
but i couldn't help but think that they were FORCING the audience to believe he's about to die. it didn't feel like a natural sequence of events...it felt a forced "let's add some tension to the end" type of device.

They are working with a great concept and character here but the movie itself was hardly something above the likes of Lethal Weapon and such from that same era...it's a really fun but cartoonish lead anti-hero in a sci fi setting.
EfNY could still be those things while still raising the bar. of course the effects, the action, and everything else will be better...but i was hoping for a director who could make EfNY more than that. EfNY has the potential to be a great gritty sci fi espionage and while i don't doubt Len Wiseman will deliver a decent action sci fi...i can't help but to imagine how awesome this movie could be under the direction of someone like Michael Mann.

i'm sure EfNY won't be horrible by any means. i liked Underworld 2 much better than part 1 and Live Free or Die Hard was enjoyable for the most part....but i was just hoping for a director with the potential to make EfNY more than an unbelievably over-the-top action extravaganza.

Exactly, that was the entire point of Escape from LA. To enjoy it you can't take anything seriously.

This whole project sucks. Escape from New York is John Carpenter's statement on society as he the direction the country was going in 1981. It's not just a cult action movie from the early 80s. Unlike a lot of action movies, Escape from New York is about something. It's like someone re-writing their version of Dark Knight Returns. That book was Frank Miller's statement. And the character has to be American. Not necessarily played by an American, but the actor has to play a convincing American. The whole point of the movie was that Snake is not going to be a part of this totalitarian American government that seems to have a British President.
