This is a little long and I had a LOT more to say but.... maybe later.
The original Evil Dead film is my favorite movie of all time. I've been waiting for this movie since I was a child and I'm not at all disappointed.
I LOVED what they did here. It was incredible. All of the easter eggs to the original series, the disturbing horror sequences, the practical effects, the depth to the underlying story behind the book, everything.
After spending hours letting this settle into my mind, I think even more of the film. I originally wasn't happy with the ending
But it's grown on me. I like the way they went with it, which kept it from being too similar to the original. That was my only real complaint coming out of the theater. Now I think the movie deserves a 9 out of 10. It had every element you want from a classic horror movie. The acting was a little stale at moments, but overall it was incredible.

To me, this movie wasn't set to disgust people and make them cringe, like the original. Nor was it meant to provide those cheap scares like the common horror movies of the last 15-20 years. This was meant to truly disturb the viewer to their core. It provided us with the disgusting (self-inflicted face removal, arm dismemberment and a hand being rip off from underneath a car) to the psychological torture of David and Mia (killing his sister, the nursery rhyme, etc.).
This "remake" (or sequel, depending who you talk to and what reports you believe) was clearly similar to the original in many ways. It was five young adults, two males, three females in a cabin in the woods. One male (Ash/David) was there with his girlfriend (Linda/Natalie) and sister (Cheryl/Mia) and two of their old friends (Scott and Shelly/Eric and Olivia). The sister is raped by the woods, possessed, attacks the third girl (Shelly/Olivia) who then gets possessed and quickly killed off. While the sister is locked in the cellar, the girlfriend character (Linda/Natalie) is possessed and begins to attack the male characters.
***I firmly believe there was a scene cut here from the 2013 film. Natalie appears to have just disappeared. There are images online of David use the chainsaw that I don't recall seeing in the film. I'm thinking (and hoping) there were scenes of a possessed Natalie torturing and teasing David (much like Linda did with Ash in the original) before he ultimately has to kill her). But I digress.***
What really set this movie apart from the original, aside from the excessive violence and gore, was the depth added to the Natureo Demento. The original had the recording from Professor Knowby and the book itself. Ash is seen listening to the recordings and flipping through the pages. But the book itself is shown more prominently in the 2013 film. You see its power over the possessed and the happenings throughout the night. You see the images from the book of the tree raping, the boiling water on the skin, the face removal, "It" rising from the ground, and much much more. This movie really showed the actual qualities of the book itself, rather than the characters just gathering information through recordings found in the basement.

After spending hours letting this settle into my mind, I think even more of the film. I originally wasn't happy with the ending
bringing Mia back, her soul being freed and her suddenly being completely healthy after that possession that CLEARLY should have taken a tole on her body (especially the burns on her face and the tongue splitting)

And the stinger at the end was perfect.

or the MPAA could save face and just come out with a R-18 rating and say it is right below a NC-17.
