Evil Dead (2013)

Does it ever explain how she splits her tongue. ..for it to be OK later on? :funny:

I just assumed once she was "cured" she reverted back to her pre-demon form, ie: no post-possession mutilation.

It looked to me like they dumbed down the tongue split scene a bit via some fake dark lighting.
I liked that look better actually. In the trailer, I thought that moment took place in the wood shed during the day it was so brightly lit. It actually looks like a basement now. Adding some blacks hasn't taken away any of its power either. Both times I've seen it I think that's the moment that gets the biggest crowd reaction.

Damn, this thing is gonna make some bank. Unless it drops its gonna land inbetween 25-30mil. C+ Cinema score though. Thats the same as the NOES remake but lower then Friday The 13th. Some BS, way better then those two.
In a way, I'm actually glad it's not a runaway hit with audiences. It shouldn't be.

I haven't gone back too far in the thread, but can we put together a list of the less obvious easter eggs from the original trilogy in this film? I know there were a LOT and i noticed a ton in the theater, but I can't remember them all.

A few off the top of my head:

All Sam Raimi fans know about the '73 Oldsmobile. (But was it the same one that Ash drove? I know that one was sent back in the vortex, but we've seen weirder things happen in this movie series....)

Natalie screaming "What happened to her eyes?"

When the door blasted open and Mia says "You're all going to die tonight" the random sounds you hear included audio from the first two movies (primarily Cheryl's line from the original, while possessed and floating by the window, quickly saying "You will die.")

Of course Professor Knowby's audio from his readings of the book in the credits.

The page in the book showing "It" rising from the ground looks a LOT like the original movie poster.

The necklace David gave Mia was basically a wooden version of the necklace Ash gave Linda in The Evil Dead.

Anyone else got any right off?

Its debatable, but
I feel like that was an Ash references when Mia sticks her stump into the chainsaw handle and then chainsaws the evil thing in the face. Reminds me of Ash's connector he made for his stump to attach to.

As I said before. I could see a plot for the sequel in the shale of ED Regeneration VG. Which makes sense.

Mia is placed in a mental institution.
The police seize the Necronomicon.
Somebody interested in her story reads from the book and brings back the Deadites.
The institution or the town fills with Deadites.
Mia escapes and goes on a killing spree. Her soul after the first movie being connected to the demon has made her stronger...which also splits off creating Evil Mia.
The ending has Mia read the incantations and sends the Evil back...but also sends her a to a different place...be it time period, dimension or even universe...where she meets Ash :D

Early word was very positive but overall this film has had mixed reviews even from the hardcore horror fans. I'd rather this be well received for the GA then the other crap remakes, Saw films or PA flicks. Studios have already destroyed enough horror franchise's in the past 5 years. At least this flick respected the source and gored it up.

If it keeps doing well at the box office, it'll get a sequel. ..fingers crossed.

Yeah, sequel's probably already green lit since it's making money for the studio in its first week.

And I'm actually impressed with it making that much.

Yeah me too. They had some good marketing and early word. The franchise has just got more popular through the decades so they def hit it at a good time. Especially since they have the option to have their lead return at some point. Another 10 years and that probably wouldnt even have been an option.

And who wouldn't give their right hand to see Ash again in action? :D
Even if it was just Bruce Campbell sitting in a wheelchair trying to mow down deadites lol

I hope a sequel happens. Because it will be enough to warrant not only ED2, but AOD2. Which will climax with Campbell and Levy in a tag team!

I don't find it all that debatable. I as well as most of the people I was with all made that same connection. I'm pretty confident that it was intentional.

Apparently this is receiving a C+ cinemascore. I am surprised.

Raimi said that in an interview in 1986 while hyping up Evil Dead II.

It honestly does not bother him now, otherwise he and Tapert would not have insisted on putting it into the remake. Raimi is a showman and entertainer, first. The scene had a backlash in the 1980s, so he "apologized for it." The scene is considered iconic and, for better or worse, classic now. So, he unapologetically puts it in the remake.

As for how it is presented in the Raimi film. It is both horrible but so ridiculous as the branches fondle her and make noises. It is cruel, mean-spirited and perverse, but so is the rest of the movie. It still has that off-center vibe where you do not know if it is supposed to be scary or some kind of warped, twisted joke. That pretty much defines the entire first movie and in some ways, the remake as well.

Which was exactly my point. It is serving a different purpose now. It is a cannonized 'iconic moment' of which the inclusion is meant to play upon the familiarity as fan service.

At the very least it is a missed opportunity for this new film to define its self.

And cruel and mean spirited and bizarre is not the same as "tongue-in-cheek" which is what the sequels are known for but is not really a good way of describing the first film by any means but is the way you described it in the post that I was responding to.

Is that good...or bad? :p

It's pretty mediocre. The Cinemascore is taken from surveys given to theater audiences. It is usually used to gauge and predict how well a film will do in terms of word of mouth. It is a pretty good measure of such things quite often. If it is to be believed in this case, not the best word of mouth coming out of this first weekend.

Damn :(

Regardless when it hits theatres in the UK on the 18th, I'm dragging everybody I know who's got money to that movie lol

On a brighter note, it made something like 24 million in the states this weekend.

What was the budget, around 20 million?

Which is very good. It'll be pleasing to those involved. I just hope it doesn't lose momentum due to those reviews.

Old BC in a walker vs a Mummy worked so Ash in a wheelchair would def have my money hahaha

Yeah, really want to see that go down. Good thing Alvarez is a fan and wants to see that as well. Need to see them slicing those deadites left and right.

That's the beauty of ED, isn't it? Everything is just so madcap. Bruce farting would make the film legendary! :D
He's like Michael Keaton...he makes everything ten times more entertaining lol

I'll be so disappointed if AOD2 doesn't happen.
So fingers crossed everything goes well :)

I can see where that would be interesting, but I would prefer to keep it rustic and in the mysterious lands of the woods. Keep it grounded for another movie, then have Ash show up at the end of that one, after AOD2.

I imagine something like Mia wandering the woods, trying to make it back home, constantly losing blood. She's delirious and confused. She passes the car from the first that she drove into the water. As she makes her way through the woods, she comes up on the same cabin. Everything is the same, only the cabin is not damaged. The jeep is there, tipped over. Everything is the same, with the exception of the fire damage. She panics and runs back into the woods. She again, passes the car in the water again (angled the opposite way of the first pass, showing that she is passing it in opposite directions). She again gets to the cabin, same set up. Everything is the same, only no fire damage.

This would set up the idea that while she thinks she's free and safe, the demons are still tormenting her, giving her false hope. This also gives the opportunity for the sequel to be a similar tone to the first, but more psychological.

From there I'm thinking have her family come up after not hearing from them on the detoxing, only to find David and their friends murdered, Mia sitting in the cabin floor, crying without her hand, bleeding out and in shock. They try to rush her out from the cabin to a hospital, obviously can't get away, and the nightmare starts again.

With the sequel they should attempt to do humour.

While I liked that concept for Evil Dead 2, that's a BIG no for this sequel in my book. If they indeed plan on combining the storylines, keep this one horror based. Let Raimi's world be a little more slapstick, while still scary and have Fede's be straight horror. Then, as they combine for a potential Evil Dead 7, go with a film that's about 85/15 horror. A ratio like Drag Me to Hell, but better, and the scary scarier and the funny funnier.

Yeah, sequel's probably already green lit since it's making money for the studio in its first week.

I'm pretty sure the only thing left is to actually sign the contract. The studio has already discussed it, Fede is already writing it and Raimi already has the plan in place for everything.

I want to say the budget was $17M. I feel I remember reading that somewhere.
