Exclusive Interview w/James Marsden 06/02/06

And you can blame Fox for not having Cykes a bigger role in x3. period!

Edit...
And before the Wolverine bash fests come in...

They aren't Wolverine's stories either, no, but Wolverine is the most recognizable X-Men character, period. It's only obvious he'd be the most prominant character in the movies.

And Cyclops had a very prominant role in X-Men.
Why do you continously defend this decision?

They didn't even attempt to accurately portray this 'recognizable' character except in name only. Which usually means that the only thing they were truly trying to cash in on was the popularity and charisma of the actor who played the role.

Cyke's powers are actually a lot more devastating than Wolverine's, if you think about it. Wolverine has to get in close. Cyke can just zap them from afar.

If they'd written something for Cyke to, I don't know, do... particularly in the first movie... ahem. Well, things might've been different.

I don't think it's how the character was directed or acted that bothers anyone. It's how he was written. Or rather, NOT written. Think about it. Exactly when did Cyke ever use his powers? He gets his visor knocked off, then he gets brainwashed to attack the woman he loves, then he cries about the latter like a little wuss (in the average moviegoing public's eyes, not mine). Wolverine gets into big fight sequences with Mystique and Sabretooth and Lady Deathstrike and leagues of human forces; Cyke gets taken out like a harmless kitten when he even does have something to do, and THAT is why Wolverine got all the love--because he was written as a badass who got to use his abilities all the mothertrucking time, and America loves a badass. In fact, America WORSHIPS the badass. That's why Arnold Schwarzeneggar is a governor. If Cyke had been a badass too, at least more overtly, then he would've been loved as well, regardless of anything else.

But for some utterly stupid reason, only Wolverine gets anything to do. It's not about a team interacting so much as it is about Wolverine kicking ass while the team supports him. That's one thing X3 did right--other characters besides Wolverine now and then managed to look like badasses, too (mostly Beast). Although Wolverine still got way too much screen time, particularly since Hugh Jackman was coasting this time. I don't get the sense he really gives a damn anymore, honestly.

And before someone accuses me, I'll freely admit it; yeah, I'm bitter, pissed off, and annoyed. I liked all three movies, but I get so bored of Wolverine and all the stupid clawfight sequences. X-Men should be about more than that. FFS, he's already getting his own movie, why the hell does he need to be the focus of the other films, too? The character is a jerk and his regeneration is boring; it doesn't fill me with wonder or curiosity about the potential and the limits like Jean's, Storm's, Cyke's, Xavier's, Magneto's, Rogue's, Kitty's, Pyro's, Iceman's, etc. Wolverine is so... common. He's your typical action hero badass jerk.

How much better would that whole sequence with the Brotherhood have been if it had been a TEAM which got chased off instead of just Wolverine? In my opinion, a LOT.

Despite what it may sound like, I don't even hate the character. I just hate the way everyone in Hollywood seems so bloody eager to suck Wolverine's... adamantium. I'm tired of it. Wolverine is most interesting when he's an actual part of a team (which does happen very occasionally), not standing in the limelight making muscles for the ladies and clawing generic bad guys for the dudes.

These scriptwriters have done some great things, but when it comes to actual decision-making... rotten. Just awful. If that's the best they can do, give it to somebody who knows what's up, for once. Or if I'm placing the blame in the wrong spot, then let's fire whatever *******s at Fox came up with this shiznit and hire some people who have a damn clue.

I really don't think they're is anything that Marsden could have done. X1 is written with Wolverine in mind and that was before anyone was cast. Fox knew Wolverine was the most marketable character, and that was the strategy. Then when Marsden signed to do Superman that was the last straw.

Well,I don't know how much bigger he was before X1.Passion of the Christ definitely was a big boost to his career, but before then...?

Aside from that he's a pretty devout Catholic, and I don't know if he'd be very tolerant of Ian and Bryan.I'd like to think he's an open-minded person, but there might have been some conflict there.

If he's okay with the social commentary and entire theme of Xmen, then he'd have been okay with a minority.

Just because he's a devout Catholic does not necessarily mean his beliefs correspond to public perception of Christianity in a box.

I'm just saying.

Scott and Jean's relationship never got much exposition. It was just: they're dating and everythings cool until Logan shows up,and him being the cool star of the film tries to seduce her. It's not really clear why we should be rooting for Scott.

Very True. Oddly enough Iceman and Rogue's relatioonship is given far more exposition
than Scott and Jean's relationship, which shuld have not been the case. By the way the trilogy plays out one would think that Wolverine and Jean are the ones in a relationship, especially since Jean kisses and embraces Wolverine alot more than Cyclops.

If that is how Fox thinks then why not simply make a Wolverine film first?
That is something I never understood. It would have been easier if Fox gave
Wolverine is own set of films first, then introduce the X-Men films giving more emphasis
on them rather than Wolverine, with the possibility of introducing him into the group
in a later installment.

Thing is, JM might be a nice guy but he is bland. You would think that would make him a good cyke but it doesn't. Also he looked too young for the role, next to Halle he was the most miscast actor of the bunch.
