The Dark Knight Exclusive TDK Set Report #3 8/13

There's only one problem if the smile-scarring occurs DURING TDK, as Jett (and others) have said. (This also refers to Miranda/Anjow reports that talked about the zipline accident, though I'm sure they weren't sure if it was actually being done or not.)

The problem is this - if Nolan grounds it in realism, how did the scars heal that fast? The Joker photo we got on IBIHDT.com shows massive scar tissue that's been healed for a while, even years. If he gets those things during TDK, there's no way they heal up in enough time for him to apply lipstick and then go about his crime spree.

Either TDK takes place over the course of several years, or he already has them when the film opens.

If its true I think that could easily fall into the realm of suspension of disbelief. If he did get injured I'd expect him to go back into hiding and regroup for a while, then launch this big terrorism campaign

Bale is excited about the possibility of better quality pics coming later today!

OMG, Bale has regressed into the character of Patrick Bateman! Run for your lives people!

Seriously though, he looks like he just chopped up somebody with an axe and enjoyed it. What a freaky photo.

I SAW THE JOKER!!!!!!! My life is now Complete! I was 10 feet above him :)

Heath came to the set around 1am in a SUV and got out, streched his arms and did a little Head shake and looked right up at us. We were above him. It happened in the matter of seconds so I wasen't able to take a pic of him. He looks GREAT and very Creepy! The Purple suite however is a dark purple...I think some people thought it was bright.

BUT I was able to snap a few pics later....my buddy had a camcorder and I used my camera to take photos from his frame..(he has tons of great video but dosen't have a way to get it online from a camcorder. He knows a TV guy who is gonna try tho... might be a few days)

The scenes we saw them film involved the Semi truck....the joker was inside the truck huntched down holding onto a hand-rail. The go one way on wacker and the Tumbler comes from the other direction. The camera car filmes between them. We saw this over and over a few times. I have video but you cannot see the joker in the video, all you see is the truck. So its not worth posting right now.

But I did film a small clip of Heath sitting on the stairs for a bit before he jumps off. You really can't see him too well.

But here it is anyway....

This one Image she has is a masterpiece and is a really good/clear/ closeup. SO its gonna be worth waiting.

Sorry if my pics are a little blurry and hard to see but Its the best my camera will do with No flash and nightshoot.

Amazing set report, this movie jsut keeps looking better and better

Re: the Joker....

The problem with a lot of these comic films is that they tend to over-explain. The audience knows going in that they're dealing with fantasy, so there's no need to point out all the little things happening to justify the events. When I go see "Star Wars," I already know I'm going to see things that are fantasy-laden, and I don't demand an explanation from Lucas on how it works.

I think Nolan understands this, and I think it's entirely possible that we just won't get ANY explanation. I think he'll leave it vague as to whether he applies the makeup or not, as to whether he was bleached or born like that or something else entirely. They didn't show Ducard/Ras enter the Lazarus Pits, but they sure as heck left it so wide open that he came off as one mysterious S.O.B.
And I think the Joker will be the same - the character has a certain amount of mystique that, if logically explained, ruins the very idea. Don't give the audience (or the other characters) any explanation and let them speculate, it's more fun that way.

totally agree with ya!
I know some of the Bat-Fans want every thing spelled out but sometimes its better to leave things ambiguous.

same could be said about Harry Osborne in spiderman 3, he gets his face blown up by a bomb and very soon afterward scarring tissue and disfigured face....

i dont know how many people picked up on it, but it didnt quite work for me. but however the joker thing works out im sure it will be great... im sure the scars will still be red and tender and all that, and not magically become scar tissue that fast. i dont know, or however he and gets his white skin will effect the scarring to dry up and be nastier or something to that effect, it might not start out as bad as we see it when he initially is scarred or something.... theres alot of possibilities.

How do you know that? A genuine question, mind you. Personally, I'm not acquainted with how mass scarring would look after a few months or so.

Either TDK takes place over the course of several years, or he already has them when the film opens.
Or it's possible it's just an overlooked facet of the production, where they didn't bother to realistically present the look of scarring.

To further the confusion on this subject: Jett's been back-and-forth on this issue. A little bit ago, he also said that it seems the Joker has the scar smile for the entirety of THE DARK KNIGHT. Nobody knows what actually happens at this point.

Seeing Christian Bale smiling kinda reminds me of THIS.

You hardly ever see the guy do a full on toothy sonrisa.

A few rumors indicated that at the beginning of THE DARK KNIGHT, the Joker's been in hiding for a while, and people aren't sure whether he's dead or not. He then pulls the strings of the bank heist and launches that. Just rumors, mind you, but it fits what you just suggested.

Maybe Joker gets scarred in the animated film and is already like that in TDK

Maybe Joker gets scarred in the animated film and is already like that in TDK

eeehhh, that seems like the easy way out... they shouldnt rely on people watching an animated film before going to see TDK. Seems kinda cheap to me, but i know it wont happen.

Well I remember many people (including Miranda) stating that her sources weren't sure whether they were going to go with the whole "zipline" thing or not (i.e., whether it was viable or not.) In other words, there were doubts on whether Joker should get "scarred" by Batman during the course of the film. Perhaps they never put it into execution and just opted for him already having the scars?

Re: the scar issue, the IBIHDT.com photo shows scars, not wounds. It's hard to put into words, but we're not seeing open cuts or wounds on his face - we're seeing what looks like massive scar tissue that's built up because of what happened to him. Like chunks were taken off his face and what is left is pock-marked, scarred skin.

To look like this in real life, it would take years. I know someone who recently had open heart surgery, and the procedure involves cutting through the chest. To this day, even a year later, the wounds are still reddish-looking and only some scar tissue has formed. To get like the Joker, he would have to go through a massive injury and then let it heal for years to look like that.

Now if this happens overnight in TDK, and Joker is healed in like, a week after he's injured, it's not going to ruin the film for me. I just think it would be cooler if he already had the scars when the film opened up.

The Joker won't be scared onscreen in TDK!!! C'mon it will be so random to have a character named The Joker who suddenly get his mouth scared which makes him look like...a Joker!

:whatever:

Another idea I heard being bounced about it that this film is told like many of other Nolans, outta sequence. That it jumps from one corner of the story to another..... 'Fraid at this point we just don't know (sob!) :(

It doesn't make him look like a Joker, only in his perverse mind does that mess look like a smile, so he accentuates it.

...............I can't breathe. The first guy who gets a high-res of the Joker this close is God.:woot:

I really don't think it will happen.

Look, we know that this sequence happens at the beginning of the film (the robbery bank sequence) and if you look closely at the pic you can clearly see a cut smile. IMO they would be no explaination about his cut-smile.

The Bale does not approve.

Coulk be, we don't even know if this is the same robbery as mentioned at the end of the Begins, a bank wasn't mentioned. Also there's Nolan's time tricks to think about. Plus it seems Batman goes to the scene of the crime, not sure how well that fits in with it being the Begins' robbery. Could well go your way but we just don't know how it'll play out

I've suggested this, but when I've talked to Anjow about this, he's pretty adamant that the scarring made it into the film one way or another, even if it's not the zipline specifically. As for me, I do lean towards the Joker having the scars for all of THE DARK KNIGHT, though I don't know that for sure by any means.

Now if this happens overnight in TDK, and Joker is healed in like, a week after he's injured, it's not going to ruin the film for me. I just think it would be cooler if he already had the scars when the film opened up.
I imagine he would be healed over months, not weeks. But that's just a guess on my part, taking into account other rumors.

Just because it opens the film doesn't mean it's the first thing that occurs in a chronological sequence. Nolan likes to tell stories out of order, as he did with BEGINS.

It's entirely possible, then, that the bank heist that opens THE DARK KNIGHT is an event that takes place long after the Joker's initial appearance.

Thats hwat im saying in the fil mthere would be no explanatino but hardcore fans who want one would see in the animated video how he was scared.

Why must you guys quote the ENTIRE first post (pics and all)? That's so annoying.

Thanks for the pics and video.
