Image there was a rope long enough to circle the whole earth. It crossed both poles and thousands of people ensured it was evenly laid out around the entire circumference of the planet. Now imagine that at the North pole the rope was cut, and an extra 10 meters of rope length was added to it. The question is - how high would the rope now have to be lifted off the ground for it to remain evenly distributed around the earth with equal tension.

assume the earth to be a flat smooth surface all around and a perfect sphere

and how did you come up with that answer... if u want u can PM me

pi r^2 = c
so r = square root of c/pi
square root of 10/3.14 = 1.78m

Nice try Danalys but pi r^2 is equal to Area of a circle.

2 pi r = Circumference of a circle :) Also remember now that 10 meters was added onto the rope's length, making the total new circumference C+10

damn memory.

so it's c+10/2pi - c/2pi which is the same as 10/2pi

when math started getting letters in it, i didn't like it anymore

i don't want numbers in my english alphabet, so keep letters out of my math equations

I'm glad others haven't taken a strike at the puzzle... it's really not htat hard guys, I figure this sort of puzzle on a board full of intelligent people would get some math brains going at it

someone already answered; what would be the point of anyone replying again with the answer?

just so he's happy that someone else is trying it, I'm gonna say 2 :o

actually they're both wrong the anser is 3X2(9YZ)4A :D
