He's supposed to be Italian, isn't he? His last name is Toretto. He could have said it in Italian, but if he said it in Spanish I guess it was because they were in Brazil.

Does it matter that he says it in spanish? I know americans that mix some spanish into their english. Its probably not uncommon in areas with larger populations of spanish immigrants, and where Toretto lived has a large number of spanish speaking immigrants.

Germans do a similar thing with english. Mixing English into their speech creaing whats known as denglisch.

Cuban? That's an odd choice. I find it interesting that despite starting in Los Angeles none of the main characters are of Mexican descent. Although Letty could hypothetically be Mexican since her Latino roots are ambiguous. Everyone I know calls her the "Mexican chick/girl".

I always assumed that they were meant to have Latin/Hispanic routes myself. I mean Jordana Brewster (who's mother is from Brazil, was born in Panama, and who frequently plays those types of roles) is playing his sister, and Michelle Rodriguez plays his GF/wife.
