Fast 8

This whole thing does seem very forced, I feel like it's definitely a marketing ploy of some kind.

The Facebook page just posted that huge cast photo from a while back with the announcement that this is the final Fast Friday post as production comes to an end. No mention of Lucas Black, but they do confirm that the "first look" comes in December. Spoilered for length:

For our final ‪#‎FastFridays‬ post, all of us in the Fast Family wanted to
thank you for coming on the ride with us during this epic production.

We began in Cuba, visited Iceland, New York and Atlanta, and as we head into our final few days of shooting, we wanted to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to those who have worked so hard over the past 100 days to bring you a movie that is going to be another incredible installment of our saga. Everything we do comes from our shared passion to bring you the very best.

Thank you Vin, who has been at the wheel since this journey began, first as star and then as producer . . .

And thanks to all of the cast of the eighth Fast:

Michelle, who’s also been with us from the start . . .

Those who’ve joined our family along the way: Tyrese and Chris from Miami in our second film; Dwayne and Elsa, who came on board in Rio in movie five; Jason, Nathalie and Kurt from last time around; and our newest members Charlize, Scott, Kristofer and Helen . . .

And our brother who continues to inspire us all, Paul.

We extend our gratitude to our new director F. Gary Gray, producers
Neal Moritz and One Race Films, writer Chris Morgan, and the hundreds of awesome, dedicated crew members who worked their asses off.

All of us take our work on Fast & Furious seriously, and we seriously
intend to wow the world again. We'll be back in December with your first look at what we've created for you.

In regular news, Statham wrapped earlier today.

"I don't eat ice cream. I only like eating real food. Steak, potatoes, chicken... that kind of stuff. But ice cream? Nah."

Just listened to a recent Lucas Black interview that he did with Chris Mannix. Confirms he's not in 8. It was the plan originally, and they tried to make it work, but it fell through due to schedule conflicts and not being able to find a way in through the story. Confirmed he signed a three-picture deal, and is hoping they can find a way for 9, but he just doesn't know for sure.

Funny, you would think finding a way into the story would be the priority.

Yeah, really. Plus, Tokyo Drift came out 10 years ago, and I assume the events of 8 pick up relatively soon after 7, which occurred right after Drift. I haven't seen Lucas much lately so maybe he hasn't aged a day, but he probably doesn't look like an 18-year-old anymore and if he does, he won't for long.

I'm sure I've said it before, but I love Tokyo Drift as part of the "early years", and if they can make it work, I welcome both Lucas Black and Bow Wow back to the franchise at any time. Also, in regards to where 8 starts in the timeline, I think it'd be kinda neat to re-open with Dom and Brian's final ride, maybe just that tail-end shot where they're starting to go off on separate roads, and then pick up with Dom on his road. But that's just me thinking out loud.

He definitely didn't look like his 2006 self. He had a much deeper voice when he met Dom.

Lucas wasn't one of my favorite things about Tokyo Drift so it is all the same for me that he won't be in Fast 8.

Also, Eastwood wrapped yesterday, and ended an Instagram post with "See you all on the next one." Could just be a formality, or he could be in it for the long haul.

That's how they do it? You won't know till the damn movie is out.

Well, considering how he appeared in Furious 7, it just felt like a one off, with no suggestion of Dom coming to him offering him a spot on the team. And it felt like an insult to him that Tokyo Drift establishes him as the new Drift King yet in Furious 7 it cuts to Dom supposedly having already beaten him with an American Muscle car like it was no big deal. Perhaps the pre-Paul Walker death plans had something different planned.

On top of that it kinda screwed with the continuity a little too much. In Tokyo Drift, Bow Wow said Dom had been beating everyone in the Asia circuit. In Furious 7, Dom just goes straight to Japan after the Shaw attack. The ideal way would have been to revisit that final Tokyo Drift scene at the end of Furious 7, that way, once Shaw was in prison, Dom would go race around Asia before going to Japan, then the final scene would Sean winning the race and earns a spot on Dom's crew.

I feel like Brian's retirement would actually provide a smoother entrance for Sean to join the rest of the family.

Even under that circumstance, the placement of the Tokyo Drift scene in Furious 7 would have made Sean's entry into the team feel off. Because Dom just races Sean, collects Han's things and leaves, with no real suggestion of him coming back to Sean to invite him in. The reason being just because there's a gap in the team now sans Brian doesn't mean Sean automatically fills it.

Then again, who knows how things were planned before Paul died. Maybe that Tokyo Drift scene was originally filmed in such a way that it would have set up Sean's entry into the team at the end of Furious 7 to more organically bring the series full circle to Tokyo Drift, instead of just that throwaway scene we eventually got.

I'm admittedly backtracking a bit here, but the ideal way would have been for Dom to bring Sean back with him for Han's funeral, and Sean stays as a main character for the rest of the film. Joining in for the Ramsey rescue, Abu Dhabi, etc.

I guess it's just how I originally perceived it. The Dom/Sean race at the end of Tokyo Drift happening at the end of Furious 7, especially with Dom's line "I got nothing but time", suggestive that he feels at ease from Shaw, at least for the time being.

Would have been way more interesting if Tommy Lee Jones and Vin Diesel got in a massive brawl. Of course they couldn't have Diesel win. No one can defeat Tommy Lee Jones. He can kill with a disapproving glare.

Still time to get TLJ in the franchise as a fresh character.

I think it's safe to say that TLJ's Hobbs would've been more like Kurt Russell character who doesn't engage in the brawls that Dwayne Johnson's Hobbs does. Suffice to say, Hobbs would've been an much more boring character.
