Then on Wednesday, a twist. First, the irritant of a leaked Russian document by a US source to Politico, which set out the Russian position at the Helsinki summit on nuclear weapons talks.
In typically florid fashion, the Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova retorted on Facebook: "Before calling other countries [to account] for 'proper' behavior and respect for international law, the United States could set an example and stop manipulating excerpts from closed documents and meetings."
And then Russian financial markets began to tumble, with the ruble hitting its lowest level against the US dollar in nearly two years.
The immediate cause appears to have been the publication in the Russian business paper Kommersant of what's known as the DESKAA bill -- one of several pieces of legislation now before Congress that threatens harsher sanctions against Russia because of its interference in US elections.
Indeed, the full title of the bill is "Defending American Security from Kremlin Aggression Act."

The DESKAA bill, which has bipartisan support, would restrict the purchase of Russian sovereign debt and make it very difficult for US entities to work with Russian energy companies in international projects.
It is the growing raft of US sanctions that has the deepest impact in Russia, threatening the Kremlin's inner circle and Russia's biggest companies, from Aeroflot to Sberbank.
Russia is taking pre-emptive action to insulate itself. Most notably, it has sold about three-quarters of its holdings of US Treasury bonds, which dropped from $96.1 billion in March to an 11-year low of $14.9 billion in May. Instead, the Central Bank is buying gold like there's no tomorrow.

Honestly, the space force is so dumb it makes my head hurt. It honestly is. Are we putting boots on the ground... in space? Having a guy in a space suit, with an M4 shooting down enemy satellites, and meteors? Are we spending billions to fly soldiers into space to continually train for combat in zero g?

It's just stupid. Might as well build a space wall to keep those dirty solar Ray's out of our country! Seriously though, I think I'd laugh out of a brain short if Trump announced the space force was indeed an attempt to fight illegal alien, aliens.

On the bright side, we will have a new president long before Space Force is anything substantial. All the treaties and negotiations that must be done before any weapons can be placed in space will tie the program up for many years. On top of that all new shuttles will have to be designed and built. Orbital launch platforms built. Deployment of all the infrastructure. All the subcontracting. Dealing with NASA. Etc. A democrat president or a democrat Congress can probably kill the program in its crib.

What really irritates the **** out of me, aside from nukes orbiting over America, is that for decades Congress has been penny pinching space exploration and space science. They've repeatedly slashed NASA'S budgets. But the second a Republican politican says they want to put the military in Space Republicans pull out their wallets. Science research and NASA are the only reason a Space Force is even remotely possible, but Republicans are content to act as if NASA isn't important while fawning over this dumb Space Force nonsense.
