20 years ago today, Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing was released. It was considered a masterpiece by many. Even the government liked it enough to put it in the film registry. And, teachers across the nation played it for their students. Yet, it only got TWO Oscar nominations. The movie to win was Driving Miss Daisy, a movie about Morgan Freeman being the driver of an old white lady. The Oscars are racist!
Spike Lee has become a bit of a joke these days, but back then he was a talented filmmaker who made great movies about controversial subjects. This is easily his best movie. And should have been the Best Picture Oscar-winner in 1989 even though it wasn't even nominated. Good work, Oscars. The interesting thing about it is that it shows how racism hasn't really gone away. It's just been put under control. All these people clearly hated each other, but didn't do anything cause they were "told" it was wrong. Then, on one hot day when everyone is frustrated from the heat that hatred is unleashed and all hell breaks loose.
