Castle without Castle? It’s a scenario that seems to be becoming more of a reality every day.
As ABC Entertainment President Paul Lee announced earlier this month, there is a possibility of continuing the show without the principle characters if stars Stana Katic and Nathan Fillion don’t renew their contracts. While on the Television Critics Association’s press tour, Lee told audiences that the creative team had some “good ideas” about where to take the show if Castle (Fillion) and Beckett (Katic) were to say goodbye. But now, executive producers Alexi Hawley and Terence Paul Winter are singing a different, weary tune about the prospect of having to cope without their main characters.
“If we had our choice, it would be the same cast, it would be the same show,” Hawley told TVGuide.com in a new interview. “We’ve done some fun stuff this year so that it has a little different energy that could absolutely carry through to a season 9. But both of us are very invested in this, and we understand that Castle has always been about Beckett and Castle. So the idea of that not happening is daunting, and we’re rooting against that.”
Castle, which premiered on ABC 2009, follows crime novelist Richard Castle as he tags along with NYPD detective Kate Beckett on her cases to help the investigation and spark inspiration for his writing. A quirky, unlikely pair, Castle and Beckett’s chemistry has led to a love story that fans of the show can’t get enough of. Even though it wasn’t always a ratings darling, Castle has secured a dedicated fanbase over its six year run. Stana Katic and Nathan Fillion have both won back-to-back People’s Choice Awards for Favorite Crime Drama Actress and Actor in 2015 and 2016.
So, with the fate of the main characters still up in the air, Haley knows the writers will have to craft a season finale that could serve as a series finale if need be.
“In a perfect world, we’ll have clarity going into the end of the season,” he explained “Obviously, there wasn’t clarity last season until the very, very end.”
Keep an eye out for where Castle and Beckett are headed next as Castle returns for season 8 on Monday, Feb. 1 at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
