Drama HBO's True Detective - Part 3

Either season aren't like any other show I've watched. :)

Certainly, no other show features dialogue such as “you ain’t that thing no more. What you used to was.”

To reiterate my point, I can't ****ing wait.

Seeing this first trailer makes me realize that Pizzolatto's writing is one thing, but I also don't think Farrell/Vaughn/McAdams/Kitsch could pull off his dialogue/monologues. Mahershala seems like a guy who could make it work, just like McConaughey did.

The aging on Ali is A+ work.

Ehh, kinda, but stuff like "Blue balls of the heart" was also just dog ****.

I think it looks great, I can't wait. I love how it's going to flash back. I guess that's the late 70s or early 80s? Either way, I think it looks good for what little we've seen. I'll definitely be watching.

Looks awesome. I didn't realize Carmen Ejogo was in this. I love her. If any of you haven't watched season 2 of The Girlfriend Experience, I recommend it.

Yeah, that's why I'm saying some of the stuff coming out of the characters' mouths in S2 was stuff that not even McConaughey could save. But also seeing this clip makes me think Mahershala may be more suited to deliver than the S2 cast.

I thought Farrell did a great job. Vaughn on the other hand...

This is looking promising. Might be back on track here after season 2.

Finally got around to seeing the first season with McConaughey/Harrelson. Honestly, I didn't get all the fuss over it. It's fine, a pretty good hard-boiled crime thriller, but I dunno. Didn't really seem to be anything up-and-above that, nothing special.

Apparently a lot of people hate the second year with Vaughn and Farrell and McAdams too. Is that even worth checking out?

Season 2 is fine, but I don't think it holds a candle to the first season if just because the balancing job of multiple protagonists and plots isn't handled, for my money, as well as it could have been. It does pick up and I don't think it's as bad as some make it out to be, but there's a lot of good about the second season. Above all else, I think Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams had the best chemistry.

Okay, well yeah, doesn't sound too bad.

I liked S1 fine, but it just didn't blow me away either. Really nice performances, a cool atmosphere, but nothing we haven't seen before in plenty of other stuff.

What else would you compare it to? Most people considered it very unique.

Yeah, I mean the central story and genre as a framework is nothing new, but the marriage of the genre with the particulars of it are unlike anything I've ever seen.

“Oh, you wanna squabble, Frank?”

I just rewatched both seasons. I loved Season 1, both characters and their relationship to one another, but particularly Rust Cohle (of course). And I liked Season 2, thought the characters were good and I’ll admit, the father/son storyline with Ray and his kid really hit me in the feels. Where it took a misstep for me was the central mystery that the season revolves around wasn’t very compelling and felt kind of all over the place.

I didn’t expect to be this hyped over the teaser, but I’m hooked in. I can’t wait to see it. It looks really good and looks like they really focused on having a good case to build the rest of it around. Just the tiny bit we’ve seen, I want to know what happened. The missing kids, the ransom style letter, the mystery peep hole. Looks like there’s gonna be some sick f***s at the bottom of this rabbit hole. Maybe as sick as Season 1.

One thing it made me think of was the Netflix documentary Who Took Johnny about the Johnny Goesch case. I watched a few months back and was thinking it would make great inspiration for a TD story. Missing paperboy, the case goes cold, years later a man claims to have been part (as victim and perpetrator) of a secret cabal of rich and powerful men involved in trafficking kidnapped kids. People think the mother has gone crazy. She claims her son visited her in the middle of the night years after, as an adult, on the run. Couldn’t help but think “Damn, if only there was a Rust Cohle involved in this case who just can’t let it go....”
