I went back and forth on FLASH GORDON the 80's film for a long time. I of course unironically embraced the film as a child. By the time I was in my 20's I was all "snobby". I wasn't going to embrace it even as a "camp" pleasure (seriously... I totally disliked and still do peoples opinions of liking something "ironically".), despite the nostalgia. I guess I wanted to be able to take it all super seriously, like I did as a child, but couldn't since you can't really ever have the view of a child again. However... It's a film I still would catch on cable or tv every once in a while... And I laughed and also thought things were still cool from a production design standpoint. Von Sidow is great as Ming, the last of the Mustache twirlers, and the rest of the cast is also good in their parts. Finally I bought the Blu Ray and Alex Ross puts it all into perspective in an extra, and I finally made my peace with the film. It's not a serious film, obviously, but it's also not JUST a camp send up. It's an experiment in musical film. It's a ROCK OPERA where the cast acts out the story of the film and QUEEN provides the songs. Viewed like that... it's and enjoyable hoot of a film. Like a bombastic, decadent stage play. It has more in common with Rocky Horror Picture Show than it does with Star Wars, and that's alright.
By the way, it looks gorgeous on Blu. To any fan I recommend it as a purchase.
