Today, a wish FINALLY comes true.

I remember when I bought my first two dvd's ('the matrix' and 'mallrats') way back when, I thought 'it's so great a new format is taking hold so some of my old favorites will be re released and I'll finally be able to own them.

At the top of that list, a movie that ruled my childhood: 'Monster Squad'.

Now, all these years later, it is FINALLY getting its due, and a 2 disc feature filled treatment at that.

I am about to go to my local Best Buy and buy it (along with season 2 of 'Weeds') but I felt like I'd post this thread first.

Hope there are others out there that care as much about this as I do... I know my older brother does at least.

In closing I'll just say one thing:

'Give me the amulet you B!TCH!'

Man, I searched high and low through Borders today, and I couldn't find it for s**t!! Then I reluctantly asked someone for help, and I'm ashamed to admit, there was a slight moment of embarassment in asking "You still have any copies of the Monster Squad DVD?", but then I realized there's no shame in wanting such an underrated gem of a film from my childhood! And sure enough, the Borders employee felt the same way, and the look on his face when I asked him, he understood! I actually got the next-to-last copy (it was in the comedy section, whereas I was checking horror and sci-fi). Damn, I can't wait to get home!

two places i went yesterday didnt have it! i may have to buy online... im crushed.

im in a tricky situation now because my bday was monday but now i think my bro may have bought it for me and hes giving it to me on fri, prob... so now i have to wait till then!

Just finished watching it, and it was fantastic. The five-part feature on the second disc is just amazing, tracking Fred Dekker's career up to the point when Monster Squad was filmed, interviewing key cast members, and seeing how they realized what a big deal the film has become to a lot of people. It's just so odd to see the kids as adults, as they all kind of left acting behind a few years after making the film. Also odd that Andre Gower looks so much older than Ryan Lambert, who still looks like he's in his 20s (probably the emo hair). The part of the feature I loved was the focus on the creature work. I never even knew the Gillman was played not be an experience creature performer, but one of the makeu-up effects supervisors, and hearing him recount the experience is pretty insightful. Not to mention Tom Noonan as Frankenstein's monster. I loved the interview with him speaking as the monster!

The movie itself, despite having the flimsiest logic I've ever seen in a film even on the level of it being a kid's movie (Why the hell are there tools for making bullets in a high school metalworks class?!?), it's just fun on concept alone. It's silly but there is actually heart to it. Frankenstein and Phoebe, it doesn't really get any cuter (without becoming sickening) than that. Great scenes with the Wolfman, and of course the classic line "Wolfman's got nards!". It's funny hearing Andre Gower talk about how the line has been sampled for techno songs in Europe and stuff like that! Rudy against the vampire brides with the cigarette hanging out his mouth, "I'm in the goddamn club, aren't I?" It's just priceless!

^you could make bullets in metalworks class in the 80's.

Monster Squad is a freaking gem, I want the movie, now!

Went yesterday after work to Best Buy and I had to explain to the dvd moron what Monster Squad was and then they were sold out anyway. I'm going to try again on Friday and hot as many stores as it takes to get it.

Monster Squad is on DVD?! Is it in stores too?!:wow:

Some kids had the Goonies, but for me it was easily Monster Squad. What a great movie. It's effects are still very very good, too. Just picked it up today with The Host and a new edition of Hard-Boiled. Oh, and freakiest scene in the movie that scared the hell out of me back in the day:

Wolfman: (spitting out foam while he talks) "He's gonna kill your kid!"

I love when Dracula was said to that little girl "give me the amulet you b*tch!"

The Monster Squad was a hardcore mix of Goonies and Lost Boys.

Yeah, that one always shook me, especially how they made that transition between him looking normal, then starting to change.

hahaha, I know, I was like wtf

how would dracula know the word b*tch?

lol

"b*tch" isn't a modern word. Had he said "Give me the amulet, you c*nt-rag!", THEN I'd have to question where he picked up that term!

ha ha ^, well maybe he picked it up, he was roaming around the city.

sounds like a cool dude. too bad is career tanked

I know, it was funny, him on the DVD talking about how Monster Squad killed his career. . . .then he came back and did Robocop 3 and killed it again!

Dekker like Joel Schumacher should really of known that taking characters like Robocop and Batman and making them kiddie orientated wasn't going to work.

And that's the ironic thing! Looking at their previous films, you'd think they'd have done better with the material than they ultimately did. Schumacher had stuff like Flatliners, Lost Boys, and Falling Down. Dekker did Monster Squad, and some of it certainly isn't kiddie friendly. All the kids use pretty crass and vulgar language (even the five year-old girl is calling people chickens**t!), Rudy's shooting chicks in the chest with wooden stakes, and Horace (the actor was 10 at the time) is blowing holes in the goddamn Gill-Man with a shotgun!!

yea, same here. I eventually found it the day it came out. I made it my mission to find it.

I go to FYE. They don't have it. Apparently it sold out from PRE-ORDERS. The girl who i asked if they had it gave me this sympathetic look when i asked for it. I was disapointed. She told me that another FYE in the mall 30 minutes from me had it, but i wasn't going there. I go to Borders and, surprised from what you said, my Borders didn't even acknowledge it's existance. The computer database didn't have it listed as availible at all. I was super pissed...yes, i get like that when i can't find what im looking for in stores.

Eventually, i found it at Wal-Mart and i became content.

'Twas a glorious day.
