CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM FOR TIM STORY, WRITERS ETC..

Hey guys!

Firstly, I hope that everyone enjoyed the film. It's gotten really crazy around here since it came out, but I am hoping that is for good reasons.

This isn't Fantastic Four 3 specific, but I thought it would be a good idea to have a thread that Tim and the others could check out to get a more concise list of things people liked and disliked about this movie, and what they would like to see in the next one. I know that Tim is going to be busy with The Losers so I thought it would be nice to make it so that he doesn't have to wade through this crazy sea of threads lol

If you can take a few moments of your time to answer the following questions, I would really appreciate it.

1) What did you like about this movie?
2) What did you dislike about this movie?
3) What would you like to see in future films?
4) General comments

Please don't turn this into a hate thread. If you didn't like the movie then say why constructively so that they can improve in future.

I can't answer all of these questions just yet, but one big thing to me:

Please, please, please ditch the bad wig and fake contacts on Jessica. I understand they can't switch to her own brown eyes now, but they need to get more variety into the hair color so it doesn't look like cornsilk, and maybe they could think about digitally coloring her eyes so they aren't so frighteningly fake with the contacts they use.

I enjoyed FF1.

FF2 should have been about FF and Doom, and then at the end you see the Silver Surfer coming so FF3 will be the Rise of the Silver Surfer. and the have to work together to get rid of Galactus and Silver Surfer or Surfer hepls do it. But the end of FF1, showed Doom would be back and that was the person you were waiting on!!! Not the Silver Surfer. I would have been fine if FF2 was done differently in that Surfer comes and Doom sees it but you show Doom at this time telling people in Latveria that he was going to save them and the world by Defeating the coming threat. Doom takes over latveria put secretly wants the surfer powers they all fight and some way Doom receives some of Silver Surfer powers, and at the end they all fight each other and team up on Galactus to save the planet. Even to the point that Doom is telling Galatus that "This is my planet and no one shall take it away from me. "The Earth belongs to Doom" they defeat Galactus by Silver Surfer Sacrifice. and after it seems like Doom and Fantastic 4 make a truce that he will live in latveria and nother bother them. They don't trust him but they agree. at the end Doom is running Latveria and you see him sitting on his throne with the power cosmic and people bowing to him and he says to himself now it is my time.

End

Then to the next movie and last FF3 Doomsday.

That's I would have had it those two ideas or even an outline.

That's how it should went.

Whole-heartedly agree....the first movie's contacts were not bad at all, WHY didn't they just use those.....BUT I will say it wasn't in every scene...pretty much just the airport scene, and a couple of other times.

I'll put mine in later Matt, I have to think about it...

1) What did you like about this movie?
The answer is simple really. I liked all the parts that were true to the comics. Not only because it was, but rather because THOSE moments invariably work better than the other stuff.
ie, I loved any scene where the FF were together as a team (walking together)
I love the Silver Surfer- truly AWESOME in some parts
I loved the action sequences that brought the comics to life
I liked the more assertive Richards
and I like when Doom acted like Doom towards the end.

2) What did you dislike about this movie?
once again simple answer. the things that deviated fromthe comics. I hated Doom for 2/3 of the movie.
I hated Galactus being a cloud.
I hated how Galactus was defeated (made no sense)
I did not like the dancing Reed anymore than dancing PP.

3) What would you like to see in future films?
Stick to the source material. trust it and it will do right by you. lessen the camp a bit more. humor yes but the camp stuff like Sue flying saying "you think", and dancing reed were a bit too much. also if Doom is to be in the 3rd film Please just keep him as Doom and stop showing Victor's face.

study,....just study. Study the Fantastic Four, and study action film making. Pay close attention to the audience response to your film. figure out what they liked and didn't like. and do more of what htey liked. For example, it should be very obvious that people were much more happy with This Doom than the previous. The obvious reason is that this one was a bit closer to the comics. It should be simple logic to deduce that the closer you are to the comics the more love the character gets. So make them as close as possible. like SS.

1. I liked how the characters were more developt. I liked that action scenes. I liked that they changed DOOM's look. I liked SS's, FF's and Doom's portrayal in the movie. I liked most of the jokes. I liked that it was kind of light, but still had action. I'll post 2, 3, and 4 later.

1) What did you like about this movie?

Many things, but for thing I liked most (as far as non-Surfer things go) was the improvements in the characters. They were far less one dimensional in this movie, and I cared a lot more about them (except Ben, who was really the only truely developed character in FF)

2) What did you dislike about this movie?

Again, some effects were weak and the climax was fairly weak.

3) What would you like to see in future films?

INHUMANS!!! Or Ruler of Latveria Doom

4) General comments

This movie was a major improvement over the first one, and I hope that the Surfer spin-off will rock and FF3 will be even better.

I would just edited my first post, but its not letting me so what they hey,

2. Nothing big, but it felt a little rushed. Don't get me wrong, I really liked the movie, but it felt more like a 1 1/2 episode from a FF tv series than a movie. Also, there wasn't really any fighting until the climax, just like FF1. I woulda liked a little fight between SS and the FF after the chase scene or something, but no biggie.

3. A little longer movie with a little more complexed plot and a little more action. If it sounds like a lot, I'm not really asking for that much, I really liked FF2 and liked FF pretty good too.

4. This movie was way better than 1(which I liked 1) and I really enjoyed this movie, but not as much as Sm3.

1) Liked the characterization of the 4 much more but still need to go further in that direction. Lose the camp but still have the FF humor. Liked the way Ben was more humorous like in the comics. The Thing was much closer to what he should be proportion wise. Just needs some tweaking now: Less neck and teeth, more traps and jaw and wider mouth. Also some help from sound effects when he is walking or running would help sell the idea that he as a 700+ pound walking boulder. And less teeth. Did I mention less teeth? I HATE those freakin' teeth!

2) Didn't like Doom. better than last time but still not Doom. Need more Latveria and Doom as it's ruler. Need the mask and hood from FF1, leg armor and hand armor from FF2 then ADD upper arm armor. This guy is supposed to have a technological suit of armor second only to IronMan's. What we're getting onscreen is far from that! Didn't like Ben hitting the bar table and rattling it! It shoulda been toothpicks!

3) Keep going in the same direction but with greater strides. If the differences in the right direction from movie to movie grew exponentially, then if not by the 3rd, then certainly by the 4th they'd be where they need to be. And I want more displays of Ben's strength! The London Eye bit was great!

4) Still not the FF like they should be but nonetheless an enjoyable enough film that I'll go see again before it's outta theaters!

1) What did you like about this movie?

-The FF saving people as a team.
-The focus on the team's celebrity and how their lives are in the public.
-In the context of the film, I actually understand why Galactus was done the way he was done. I appreciate that you and the FX team tried to hint at there being more to Galactus than that cloud. Silver Surfer was perfect as well.
-The humor was spot-on. Good job!
-The Fantasticar was amazing. More of this in the sequel, please!
-Kerry Washington's Alicia. Perfect job on developing her. She shined in this film!

2) What did you dislike about this movie?

-Jessica Alba's makeup, contacts and wig. She didn't look natural.
-Doom. To me, he seems one-dimensional. We know he wants power, but why? What's the big plan? It could be good to show what his motives are for what he does.
-Reed needs lots of work on his stretching FX. Maybe try getting WETA for the third film.
-The fight scenes should be longer. They all seem to move at a too fast pace.
-Thing making too many jokes. He was funny in the film, but I felt he was making too many jokes and funny comments (more than any other character).

3) What would you like to see in future films?

-More focus on the FF as celebrity. I felt that FF2 really had a good message on how celebrities lives sometimes crowd the more important things on the news. More of this in the sequel would be great!
-More of the Fantasticar.
-A more developed Doom that is more three-dimensional. I would like to go inside the mind of Doom, and see why he does what he does. Why does he want power? What is his big plan?
-The Puppet Master. I know not much about the character to be honest, but anything that gives Alicia more screen-time is good in my book! :p

4) General comments

I think the team improved greatly on FF2, and you showed how much you truly understand the FF team. I honestly loved the moments that just showed the FF in society and how their lives are more than the action scenes. The comedy hit all the right points.

What did you like about this movie?
Obviously the displays of power and the nods to us fans. (Fantasticar, Roberta the receptionist, etc.)

The truly poignant face to face character developmental scenes. (Sue and Alicia before the wedding, Sue & Reed talking about raising a family, Ben and Johnny talking about dying, Sue and Johnny finally showing love and concern for one another)

What did you dislike about this movie?
Doom's "gorilla type" mask and his flagrant cartoonish depiction. Give Doom depth and nobility or simply don't use him at all.

Illogical plot devices (Johnny's final nonsensical power switch, Surfer getting battered by debris during the finale when he could become intangible and fly through things during the rest of the film, etc.)

What would you like to see in future films?

I'm going to keep this simple.

MORE OF THE THING. It seems like wasted potential when you don't have the Thing rough-house or use his power in any meaningful way. His new look was perfect and Chiklis is simply wonderful.

And MORE of those quiet character developmental scenes mentioned above. Kids don't like to be talked down to so, there's no reason to neglect character development. Don't cut out the intelligence and the heart that has made FF "The World's Greatest Comic Magazine."

2) What did you dislike about this movie?

-Jessica Alba's makeup, contacts and wig. She didn't look natural.

-Reed needs lots of work on his stretching FX. Maybe try getting WETA for the third film.

Oooooo... two good points here. Jessica's an easy fix and should be worked on but I wonder what can be done about Reed's poor stretching FX? Tim Story knows his stuff. I'm sure he realized that the stretching looked bad. If it simply can't be done or the budget doesn't allow for it, they really need to write things out of the script or cut them from the final version. Even though it led to a nice comedic moment when Sue walks in, Reed's dancing should've never been included in the theatrical cut.

My list is long...so I will need some time to develop it. I'll return as soon as things settle down on the boards after opening weekend...

1) The characterzations were much improved and the family dynamics. Loved the Silver Surfer. I thought the storyline was strong and I liked the idea that somethings were implied and not necessarily explained. Also loved seeing the Invisible Woman utilize more of her powers and the Fantasticar was awesome to behold.
2) My biggest complaint about the movie is just that I would have wanted to hear Galactus voice talking to the Surfer and the climax with the Surfer could have been longer.
3) The Inhumans. As visually stunning as this movie was with the Surfer, I can only see the Inhumans being able to compete with it. Well the Negative Zone also but I think that should wait and be used in FF4. Also, if Doom is utilized again in some form, I would like to see him as the noble monarch of Latveria. Also, even though this movie did not feel short too me, a longer runtime would be appreciated so that the story can be more in depth.
4) All in all, a marked improvement over the first one and the love and knowledge of the characters are shining through. I think that Don Payne did a great job on the script and should be utilized in the next one also. All in all, kudos to Tim and Company for a solid rendition of Marvels First Family.

First off great thread. We know Story reads these boards and I think a formal gathering of honest, unspiteful advice might give the fans more of what they want.

1)Comedy...Fantastic Four is suppose to be silly at times and the Johhny and Ben dynamic is great on screen. Would like to see more of it though. You stepped up the action and it was great. Would have liked to see the Fantastic Four somehow help Surfer with Galactus somehow...they only teamed up once in this movie to fight the falling wheel...and yet that was sort of scattery.

2)Not enough Doom being pure evil...he is more evil than that...but you surely improved. Would have liked to see him try to hurt Sue and Reed or Ben steps in. Well I think we all wanted a big Galactus battle but that goes in hand with the Fantastic Four teaming up to somehow help the Surfer...Galactus just went down to easy.

3)Keep up with the current formula. I want to see Doom full blast on a global scale create destruction and death. More Johnny and Ben out and about together, more Sue and Johnny interaction...it felt kind of forced, I have faith.

4)Please make the length longer, drop the Sue contacts, and no dancing...it hasn't worked in a comic movie yet:woot: unless it's Alba:cwink: And please no more overtly obvious product placement...Reed Richards would not use a hemi to make the Fanasticar run.

Love the movies and can't wait for the third...if the next improves upon this as Rise of the Silver Surfer did, then it will be a great trilogy and a great franchise.

Nice thread. I just came back from the movie and while it's definitely way better than the first movie, there is still rooms for improvement. Anyway, here are my thoughts:

1) What did you like about this movie?

-Silver Surfer: I think WETA did a heck of a job using Doug Jones' motion to create a CGI character that has good facial expressions and looks realistic.
-Fantastic Four: I think the actors have better chemistry now than FF1, and you finally get Reed who acts like a leader, Thing who stops feeling self-pity and have some fun, and jokes that aren't all cringe-worthy.
-Visuals: I think WETA did a great job with most of the CGI effects.
-Doom: Finally got him a bit closer to the comics, although they still have works to do.
-Script: Nice, tight, and up to the point, but could've used more depth and running time.
2) What did you dislike about this movie?
-Complexity: Although they tried to make FF more sitcom-esque, I really hope they would try to make it feel more like a MOVIE than a sitcom. More depth (at least comparable to The Incredibles), more emotions, and not tried to make it dumb down for kiddies. FF2 is good but still have a few of those moments.
-Mr. Fantastic's stretching: Reed's moves at the dance floor looks too fake and cartoonish, which is weird since they animate SS so well. And I don't understand why his dress shirt stretch with his limbs.
-Doom: He is better than FF1, but we need to delve deeper to his psyche and his domain. Why does he want to conquer world? What's his beef with Reed (don't say it's cuz Reed stole his girl)? I want to see a villain who is every bit as smart as Reed, and alot more cunning, and ruthless.
-Action scenes: Or the lack thereof.
-Alba's makeup: I think Alba's hair & makeup look kinda fake early on, and it got better later. I hope in part 3, Alba will look more natural from the beginning.
-Epic: FF should be adventurers and not stuck in NYC all the time. This movie lets them move around a bit but I want to see more.
3) What would you like to see in future films?
-Depth: I want to see the level of emotions and depth present in The Incredibles, Spider-man, and X-Men (except part 3) in FF. FF is a family and there should be more emotions, not less. And there should be more depth and not so sitcom-esque. We need even better writing.
-Doom: Dr. Doom is still not as evil nor as intelligent as he is in comics. I want to see Doom having a screen presence like Vader, where you have a sense of dread when you see him. I think they botched him too much but I hope part 3 will do him justice.
-Action: I like how FF saved people in UK, but there should be more action scenes that are memorable. Better encounter with villains is a start.
-Continuity: I want to see FF grows and matures, and deal with the aftermath of part 2. I want to see Franklin Richards (if possible), a better Doom, better chemistry between the cast, and good jokes that don't appeal to kiddies.
4) General comments
-As a Marvel fan, I was greatly disappointed with the first movie. I felt Tim Story, Fox, and Marvel let down us fans by giving us different version of origin, a dumb-down version of Doom complete with obsession about Sue, skin "virus", and electricity powers that weren't from the original FF. Plus, he was just a billionaire, not a scientist, and wanted to kill for stupid reasons.

Plus Reed was too weak, Sue was too whiny, Johnny was too obnoxious, and Thing was too self-loathing. In short, you found it hard to root for the characters. And I must say Tim Story wasn't too qualified to tackle this movie like Raimi was with Spider-man and Nolan with Batman Begins. He didn't understand FF and didn't tried to make it the best movie he could. The result was a movie that you knew they botched.

I saw FF2 and it's an improvement over 1st, but is still a long way from the movie that I envisioned. I hope if there's part 3, Story & crew can learn from their mistakes and give us the movie that we wanted from the start.

The film had a rushed feel. Doom was pathetic. My god why can't they get him right. SS was good and really the only good thing in the movie. Galactus was just senseless. I don't really care if their is a 3rd film. If Marvel get the rites away rom FOX, then i'd care.

CONSTRUCTIVE criticism, not bashing. Didn't you read?

Anyway, the only really big thing I'd change would be Doom. I'm sad to say that, though Julian McMahon was fine as how Victor was portrayed in the first film, I really don't think he suits the actual Doctor Doom very well. He's voice just doesn't mesh with the character, and I'm honestly surprised that Tim Story didn't ask him to try to lower it a bit. Also, I don't think he should have been out of his costume at all. They could have still done the whole him coming back to help take on SS angle with him in full Doom get-up, because as it was I didn't feel like "woah... Doom is teaming up with the Fantastic Four? that's insane!" instead it was just like "okay... some guy is helping Reed and the others, big deal."

My advice would be to either get Julian to play the role as an arrogant monarch rather than a cocky businessman and lower his register a bit, or dub over the voice (To be honest, it would have been better to have Laurence Fishburne do the Doom voice and let Doug do all of the SS) and if Julian won't go for that, replace him with Doug Jones since he's already been brought along, and since as I said before, Doom should never be out of his costume it won't matter that it's a different guy since he'll be under all of that armour.

i like most of the movie, the Silver Surfer was perfect, and i lke that F.F4 was acting more like a family
the things that i dont like is the its was too short and the story whent too fast just klie X3, the othe thing is Galactus i expected something...better
and the thing that make me sad the most is Doom, i thing that he should had have more sreentime and do more things

I liked that Reed was more assertive this time round.
I would have liked to see Reed use his powers a bit more creatively and a bigger action scene for him, and the Four all together.
I found the last fight scene was too short, a bit more of Dooms fighting capabilities would have been nice.
I would have also liked to see a bigger connection between Ben and Reed.
Johnny this time a round was good he was funny without being incredibly annoying!
Also the addition of Franklin would be great!

1) What did you like about this movie?

-The BIG improvement in portryal of Doctor Doom- specifically the armour, brooding attitude, introduction of Latverian castle, and usage of "Richards"
-The family dynamic still going strong with light-hearted bickering
-The growth of the relationship between Ben and Alicia
-The greater position of Reed as leader
-The light-hearted atmosphere except when it was inappropriate
-The Surfer- just everything
-The allusions to Galactus himself within the cloud so that comic Galactus can still exist in a future film
-The final confrontation between the Surfer and Galactus and the "We do have a choice" theme.

2) What did you dislike about this movie?

-The "Death" of Sue which felt unnecessary and forced.
-The lack of a bigger plan than "Get Power" for Doctor Doom and that he was so often out of his armour or at least without his mask.
-That Galactus wasn't present until the Third Act and came so late that there wasn't enough drama.
-I wasn't a fan of the cloud idea or the power swapping.
-That Johnny was the only one to beat Doom and the only one to help Surfer away- even though it was all their powers it didn't feel like the Four working together.

3) What would you like to see in future films?

-Doctor Doom ruling Latveria- the progress is already there, just push it through. And increase his hatred with Reed as opposed to all four.
-The Fantastic Four going somewhere "Out of this world". Underwater, into space, the NEgative Zone, wherever.
-The growth of the Four's family- a baby Franklin.

4) General comments

I liked both movies and as a pure action blockbuster I LOVED this film, much better than 1, one of my favourite films of the year. There was enormous improvement in all areas, Galactus wasn't ruined as I feared, the Surfer was handled brilliantly and ESPECIALLY, Doom was much, much improved. Very well done and keep up the good work!

1) What did you like about this movie?
There's a lot I loved about this movie. The family dynamic, them really acting like a family. The introduction of the Silver Surfer was done well as was developing existing characters like Alicia. The subplots; dealing with fame, wanting to start a family, johnny feeling like a screw up. The action was done very well and was exciting as was the Fantasticar. The build up of dr doom, was also very good.
2) What did you dislike about this movie?
Perhaps more of Galactus. More interaction between reed and ben, and more romance between sue and reed.
3) What would you like to see in future films?
Nova as a possible love interest as well as powers.
More emotion between all the characters, like sue's and johnnys.
There were a few "cheesy" lines of ben's so maybe change that a bit :)
4) General comments
I adored the film. Even with certain flaws I prefered it to the first because of the development, solid story, plots, certain acting and humour. It was very entertaining :D

Funny, I was just about to make a thread on this...good thing i looked back. But seriously, it'd be really cool if the mods could sticky this...I think its really important because Tim himself in a SHH article says he checks the SHH boards frequently to get constructive criticism for the F4 movies

1) What did you like about this movie?

First off congrats to Tim, the movie was amazing. I loved that he still kept the family dynamics there and that family dynamics and action were equally important. I LOVED the silver surfer, he was crazy  :word:
The little things made him cool...like when he phased through stuff, or phased out of his board while flying.
The four used their powers much more which was great...I liked how they use their powers for everyday life (Susan turning her blemishes invisible, Reed stretching his arms out to get books and other tools, etc)
The action scenes were a much bigger improvement from the first also. Btw, I loved Super Doctor doom and how he killed General Hager. The smaller roles in the film were good as well like General Hager, Frankie, and Alicia Masters (I liked her charecter a lot much more this time).
Oh and I absolutely LOVED Stan Lee's cameo...that was my favorite one ever. And I liked Sue and Johnny's brief mention of their father.

2) What did you dislike about this movie?

I didn't really like the wedding scene at the end, it was kind of weird.
I also didn't like the Silver Surfer showing sue Galactus destroying a planet through his belly...It didn't look as bad as I thought it would but it still reminds me of the teletubies...I think a flashback or telepathic projection to sue would have sufficed.
I wish Dr.Doom was more arrogant but again Super Doom made up for this, for me at least.

3) What would you like to see in future films?

I want to see Dr.Doom again, he improved a lot in the second but I hope hes more of that arrogant SOB we all know and love. More of the four around the world, the second one really did this...which is great. The four using their powers. I'd like Alicia to have the same amount of screen time as she did in the second.
The PG rating was fine, it didn't effect the film one bit for me...it felt like a PG-13 to be honest but for the third it'd be cool if there can be a longer running time....about 2 hours. The 1.5 hour long FF2 wasn't too bad, pacing was great but an extra half hour to develop the charecters would be nice and it doesn't hurt the film.
I want to see more great action sequences. I also would like to see the four face problems again...I liked the dilemmas that arose when Reed and Sue were planning to split or when Susan temporarily passed away.
I'd like to see galactus come back but if he doesnt I hope the third has better and badder villains.

4) General comments
Good job Tim Story, you've improved a lot and made this an enjoyable F4 film. The F4 have a lot of great adventures to tell and Im confident that you'll make an even better job in FF3.
Keep the family aspect alive and use really cool action...that pretty much it, I loved the film

1. I liked the Silver Surfer, more mature Johnny, a more badass Doom, and the action/comedy too.
2. Too much dialogue.. Well it needed more action to even it out I guess.
3. A freaking explaination to the Silver Surfer.. like. HOW he got his powers, and HOW he made a deal with Galactus, and WHY the general was an a$$hole (lol kidding..)
4. It got boring with too much science talk and dialogue..

I think your point 3 will be answered in the SS movie :cwink:
