Fox has picked up "Fringe," a spooky series from the minds of J.J. Abrams, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, reports Variety.

The network has made a series commitment to the Warner Bros.-Bad Robot production, which will start off with a two-hour pilot budgeted at more than $10 million. Abrams, Kurtzman and Orci (who are working on Paramount's new Star Trek movie) wrote the project and will executive produce along with Bryan Burk ("Lost"). A search has begun for a pilot director as well as a series showrunner.

"Fringe" mixes elements of "The X-Files" and Paddy Chayefsky's Altered States with what Abrams calls "a slight 'Twilight Zone' vibe." It will focus on brilliant but possibly crazy research scientist Walter Bishop, his estranged son and a female FBI agent who brings them together.

Episodes will explore self-contained mysteries of the paranormal, as well as the relationships between the three leads.

"So much of the story is relatable people in extraordinary situations," Abrams said. "The show is definitely a nod to 'Altered States' and 'Scanners' and that whole Michael Crichton/Robin Cook world of medicine and science."

There'll also be an overriding mythology that will come into play from time to time, as well as a healthy dose of humor.

"It does the stuff my favorite TV shows and movies do, which is to combine genres that shouldn't fit together," Abrams said. "It's definitely meant to scare the hell out of you, but it's also meant to make you laugh... It pushes all the buttons of things we loved from our childhood."

Driving the show will be the Walter Bishop character, a larger-than-life figure who bears some resemblance to the titular character in Fox's "House." In the pilot, he's in a mental hospital.

"Imagine that your father is Frankenstein mixed with Albert Einstein," Orci said. "He's someone who has the mental ability to solve so many problems but is so different that communicating with them is almost impossible."

me liking it already

In other news, Fox has already canceled it :wow:

Due to the depth of talent involved and the intelligence of the writing Fox has decided to cancel the show before the pilot could be filmed. Fox is looking into a spinoff series for the "Old Pedo" character from Family Guy and the new reality series- Dancing with Transexual Illegal Immigrants.

I also heard they made an offer to NBC to buy the rights of MILF Island :cwink:

But seriously, Lost, the Star Trek Franchise, The Mission Impossible franchise, 01-18-08, and now this...is it me or is Abrahams quickly becoming one of the biggest power players in Hollywood?

This would sound good if it didnt sound just like Supernatural...

Helmer Alex Graves is set to direct "Fringe," the Fox drama pilot from J.J. Abrams, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci.

Production is set to begin in February on the two-hour pilot for "Fringe," which revolves around paranormal mysteries, as seen through the eyes of a crazy research scientist, his estranged son and a female FBI agent.

Fox has given a series commitment to the project, which comes from Warner Bros. TV and Abrams' Bad Robot. The budget for the pilot is in the $10 million range.

Graves will serve as an executive producer on "Fringe," joining Abrams, Kurtzman, Orci and Bryan Burk.

Graves' credits include "Journeyman," "The Nine," "The West Wing," "Boston Public," "Gideon's Crossing," "The Practice" and "Ally McBeal."

Ah damnit, I swore I'd never watch another new show on Fox...sounds interesting, but I don't want to get invested. I can't let myself be hurt again.

John Noble (The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King) has been tapped as one of the three leads in "Fringe," Fox's high-profile sci-fi drama from J.J. Abrams, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci.

The Hollywood Reporter says "The Wire" co-star Lance Reddick also has been cast in the project produced by Warner Bros. TV and Abrams' Bad Robot.

The two-hour pilot, being directed by Alex Graves, centers on a young female FBI agent who is forced to confront the spread of unexplained phenomena and work with Dr. Walter Bishop (Noble), an institutionalized scientist whose work might be at the center of the coming storm.

Reddick will play Phillip Broyles, a special agent for Homeland Security who heads the special Fringe division, established to investigate a series of terrorist/paranormal events. (Tomas Arana had been erroneously confirmed as cast in the role).

Fringe
(Sci-Fi Mystery Drama, Tuesdays 9pm)
When an international flight lands at Boston's Logan Airport and the passengers and crew have all died grisly deaths, FBI Special Agent OLIVIA DUNHAM (Anna Torv) is called in to investigate. After her partner, Special Agent JOHN SCOTT (Mark Valley), is nearly killed during the investigation, a desperate Olivia searches frantically for someone to help, leading her to DR. WALTER BISHOP (John Nobl), our generation's Einstein.

There's only one catch: he's been institutionalized for the last 20 years, and the only way to question him requires pulling his estranged son PETER (Joshua Jackson) in to help. When Olivia's investigation leads her to manipulative corporate executive NINA SHARP (Blair Brown), our unlikely trio along with fellow FBI Agents PHILLIP BROYLES (Lance Reddick), CHARLIE FRANCIS (Kirk Acevedo) and ASTRID FARNSWORTH (Jasika Nicole) will discover that what happened on Flight 627 is only a small piece of a larger, more shocking truth.

From J.J. Abrams ("Lost"), Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, the team behind "Star Trek," "Mission: Impossible III" and "Alias," comes a new drama that will thrill, terrify and explore the blurring line between science fiction and reality.

Joshua Jackson kinda remind me of a poor mans Josh Duhamel

Both this and Joss Whedon's Dollhouse look great!

Can't wait for them to come on air.

Wow. I wasn't really interested in Fringe before, but after seeing that trailer... just... wow. :wow: I'm definitely looking forward to this now.

Putting the writers of transformers on the poster is not a good Idea....
