"From The Pages Of..." Comics Universe RPG: Season I Signup/OOC Thread

I'll try to post as Ben and Al as soon as possible

Okay. I'm dropping Holmes.

From The Pages Of... RPG APPLICATION

Screen Name: Byrd Man

Character you'd like to portray: Rorschach

Superhuman powers, traits, other attributes of interest:
From MB:

Though he has no superhuman powers, Rorschach has displayed a profecient agility and strength for a human being of his stature. He carries a grappling gun given to him by Dan Dreiberg, formerly the second Nite-Owl, whom he was a frequent partner with in the 80's. Wears a latex mask concealing a substance controlled by heat and pressure, which moves along the mask with his facial expressions to give the appearance of constantly varying ink blots.

Rorschach is also a keen detective, despite his mental health, expert fighter, tactician, and improvisional arsenalist, able to use virtually anything in his surroundings as a formidable weapon.

Originally appearing from (which comic, and company?): Watchmen #1 (1986), Vertigo Limited Series

Fictional history of the character (as you're going to interpret it):

From MB again:

Walter Joseph Kovacs was born to a single mother who spent a large portion of his childhood paying their rent through prostitution. Physically and verbally abused, Walter became irritable, insociable, and particularly violent as he aged, often sending his various bullies to the hospital after a fit of anger. Taken into protective custody, Kovacs attended High-School only to excell in boxing and gymnastics. By age 16, he was working in a women's clothing factory, a job of which he despised. But one night, he was given a rejected dress design of ink patterns, to be worn by a famous model. Months passed, and Kovacs thought nothing of it, until he read about that same woman's murder. Despite her screams, no one had bothered to save her from her killers. Inspired to take up vigilance to fight crime, Kovacs resewed the dress into an inkblot mask, giving him the disguise of a vigilante he would call Rorschach.

In the early 1980's, Rorschach and a fellow vigilante, Nite-Owl, became frequent partners, which led to their invitation to be a member of a group called the Crimebusters, led by Captain Metropolis, a member of a former superhero group called the Minutemen. Things were going well, until a member named The Comedian stood up and left, in the process insulting the very idea of a superhero team. Though he did not admit it, Rorschach admired this, leading to a pattern that would send him down a darker path. When The Purge happened, Rorschach decided to remain a vigilante, becoming hunted by the police and hated by everyday citizens. Even so, all of New York would come to fear him, as in 1995, the masked vigilante finally went off the edge. Investigating the kidnapping of a young girl, Rorschach found her abductors home, only to realize the criminal had killed her and fed her remains to his dogs. Enraged, Rorschach senselessly beat the dogs to death, before grabbing the criminal and tying him up in a burning building, watching as he died. From then on, Kovacs ceased to exist entirely, as Rorschach became a merciless killer. Now, he has the underworld at his grip, as he continues a crusade of brutal justice.

Hero, Villain, or Walking the line?: Walking The Line

List a few reasons why you chose this character: Rorshach is one of my favorite comic characters, and with Lent coming up I need a way to work out my rage.

How will this character differ from it's original incarnation?: I just plan on updating Rorschach's timeline to include the modern day.

Write two complete sentences explaining what you can bring to this RPG: I can bring a decent RPer with two and a half (boy, time flies!) years experience.

How many days a week you intend on posting in the RPG: As much as possible/if I feel like it.

Please provide a small sample post as your character, at least three paragraphs and one line of dialogue in length:

Brooklyn

A lone figure walks down an alley, their face hidden in shadows.

Halfway down, two youths with their hair in knots start to follow the person down the alley.

"Hey, buddy!" One of the Knot-Tops yell to the figure.

"I'm talking to you!" The other Knot-Top says as he places his hand on the person's shoulder.

"Hurm?" The figure says as it turns to the two men.

"Oh, god!" one of the knot-tops says as he takes off down the alley.

His friend, meanwhile...isn't so lucky.

The figure's hands grab the punk by the collar, and toss him to the ground with surprising strength.

"Vermin." The man says as his face is revealed in the lamp light.

"Who sent you?" Rorschach says as he grabs the hooldlum's hand.

"Nobody."

KRAK!

The hood screams in pain as the masked man breaks his index and middle finger.

"Lying. I don't like liars. Don't worry. Won't insult legendary underworld solidarity by suggesting you surrender name without torture."

The knot-tops muffled screams are barely heard outside the alley way as the masked avenger goes to work.

Do you know how to post pictures on the Hype boards?:

Yeah.

It better not be Nite-Owl.

Because he just tempted me to actually work on my sample post. :csad:

Damn you, Byrd! Don't you tempt me to pick up a Watchman!

I was thinking Manhattan, but that's a daunting task. And Syn might kill me. Hurm.

My god... imagine if we could get the whole Crimebusters roster up and running.

(Aside from Captain Metropolis, which... let's be honest, no one would want to play. :o)

You'd think the bad taste in your mouth would confirm his homosexuality.

I don't know that I could handle Manhattan - yet I can't see myself as Veidt or Laurie. Of the three, Silk Spectre would be my best option, surprisingly. Unless I went with the Comedian. But who would play a character destined to die?

Who says that's how he'd end up.

Imagine if the Comedian lived.

...and was pissed off.

Wow. Reading those posts is like watching a Friday the 13th movie in my head.

Oh, crap. I forgot.

Byrd is approved.

A little under two years ago on the F13 community board. I joined up with a Horror RPG they had and nobody picked Jason, and it was either him or Leatherface, but I was fairly new at rping and I wanted someone who was a bit tougher than your average slasher, so I went with my hero Jason.

I stopped and let one of my buddies take over him so I could focus on Darkman and Leatherface more.

F*** it. I wasn't gonna go through with it, but here goes...

Completed sample post for Nite-Owl:

"NO MORE MASKS!"
"NO MORE MASKS!"

Even ten blocks from the actual riotscene, he could still hear the mantra beating on his chest.

The year was 1995. William Jefferson Clinton had been sworn into office of President just two years earlier. And while his four previous predecessors were hesitant to gauge the potential conflict that loomed within the Senate from the topic of an unsigned act approved only by Richard M. Nixon in 1985, Clinton had effectively broken the silence of the issue when he brought it up from the archives and announced it would be passed as law. The act in question was the Keene agenda, outlawing masked vigilantism and cutting the population of costumed superheroes from immunity of arrest.

But the law's potential resurface was met with reactions of nearly cataclysmic proportions. Once the idea of the thinning community of costumed superheroes being depleated was put into perspective, many former supervillains had taken what was considered to be their saving grace in stride, collectively beginning to attack American citizens in the hopes that the bill's signing would make haste and end superheroism forever. As a result, many police officers had gone on strike in fear, leaving the streets of New York City, Basin City, and others protected by little more than vigilance... an ironic twist of fate, all things considered. But the strike had prompted chaos, leading to international riots over a period of weeks, declaring the public's distrust of their would-be heroes.

Nite-Owl, secretly the mild-mannered Dan Dreiberg, was one of the heroes trying to keep the peace. But almost the very moment he entered the battlefield ahead of him, the realization had quickly dawned upon him that even with his gadgetry and prowess to keep above being killed by the rioters, he was in way over his head.

"Please, people, listen to me!", He pleaded over a megaphone, hanging off of the side of his massive aircraft, the Owlship. "The police strike is being negotiated! There's no need for this! Please, just put down your weapons and cease! Return to your homes!"

"Who's gonna make us, vigilante? I don't see no badge!", One idle member of the crowd of looters shouted, as an electronic store's front window was shattered, prompting an invasion of desperate bystanders.

Nite-Owl watched them, horrified, as they took to the objects within like animals. But even as he reached for his utility belt to bring forth something to prevent the robbery, he couldn't bring himself to go through with it. These people weren't the criminals he was used to fighting. They were just people. People out of line, perhaps, but understandably so. The country was in anarchy, and there was nothing he could do about it.

Shaking his head, helpless, Dan commanded the Owlship to hover forward, continuing down the torn-apart and vacant streets, as other citizens fled, eager to make it to the next block to continue their unlawful acts. The government would not ignore them any longer. Masked vigilantes had no place in their world, and even if he didn't want to admit it, Dan was starting to see their side. But at the cost of the country's sanity, was it really worth all of this violence?

At a fourway intersection on the end of the block, Dan finally stopped the Owlship, and leaped down from it's hub.

Backup... gotta find backup...

"H-Hey, man! I was... I was just... I wasn't doing anything! Please don't hurt- ACK!"

Nite-Owl's head shot towards the direction of a dark alleyway, as several sickening sounds came from the void of shadows. Someone was being slaughtered in there. Dan took a deep breath, and was about to retrieve his shuriken as a weapon, but stopped when he immediately saw the thug in question thrown out onto the pavement. His arm was twisted and his nose was bloodied, as his eyes rolled back into unconciousness. And stepping out behind him was a more-than-familiar face...

"Rorschach!", Dan called out, running over to the scene as the vigilante stepped into light, wiping his gloves. "God, am I glad to see you. Listen, man, I can't do this on my own. I need some-"

Dan stopped, as he realized something. What Rorschach was wiping from his gloves was fresh blood. The thug hadn't been attempting to kill anyone. He was being assaulted by Rorschach the entire time. The inkblots on the rogue vigilante's mask shifted, as he finally acknowledged the nervous Nite-Owl's prescence.

"Ran into trouble,", Rorschach coldly explained, walking past the nearly lifeless thug's body. "Won't be bothering innocents again."

"I...uh, I can see that.", Dan responded, uneasy at the sight at his feet. "I guess we've all been kind of busy, huh?"

Rorschach didn't respond immediately. Instead, he just looked forth, ignoring Dan for a tense moment. "Some of us."

Nite-Owl looked back, watching the fleeing citizens. Trying to do what he could to ignore the tension between him and his former friend. As much as he valued Rorschach's friendship over the years, he had heard all of the rumors. Starting back when he had handled the Blaire Roche kidnapping. After that, his friend hadn't been the same. He had started becoming more brutal. More unforgiving. And speaking in some unsettling growl, almost a hoarse voice from beneath his mask.

Then again, maybe Rorschach wasn't the only one that had changed. Everyone was.

"Look, I'm just glad you're here,", Dan finally stated. "These riots are getting out of hand. Someone's going to get hurt, or worse. We need to keep the peace."

"Someone is getting hurt.", Rorschach agressively replied. "Not us."

"I..", Dan stuttered. "What do you mean?"

"Whole world descending to madness.", he explained. "Mistakes of past made. Can't keep fighting soft. Can't keep being merciful. World won't allow it. Not anymore."

Dan couldn't believe what he was hearing. Was he actually suggesting that... they become executioners?

"Rorschach, y... you can't really mean that.", Dan urged. "They're just... they're not thinking straight. This Keene act's got everyone on edge. They're still citizens."

Rorschach looked Dan straight in eyes. Even with Dan's goggles and his own mask, both heroes were intuned in that moment to the passionate hatred in his voice. "Not anymore."

And in that moment, Dan didn't know what else to say. He simply watched the man he once trusted treaded back into the shadows of which he came, as he gave a final warning.

"Open eyes, Daniel. World needs hope. Evil must be punished."

He was right. The world needed hope.

But not that kind of hope.

God almighty. What's happened to us?

Approved.

EDIT (again): Eh. I have neither the time nor inclination to have Byrd pissed at me. Especially during Lent. You're both approved.

God save us all.

Front page has been updated with the new(er) staff of Catman and Gallagher.

If eveyone would state who they're playing so I can finally update the roster, that'd be great. Until then, I'll only be going off of recent posts in the IC thread.
