Legends Future of the Expanded Universe

This is really more of a different story. The Marvel films are not continuations of the comics. The Star Wars books are continuations of the films.

But I do agree they should have a Star Wars canon and a Legends canonc where history is different. Maybe just to make it fair, Legends gets the unaltered Original Trilogy.

Not all the way, I've been so busy. But what I have read is excellent, some great backstory about the Empire and its inner workings.

For some reason I found myself looking into star wars canon last night. One thing I got curious about was the history of the Mandalorians.

So the EU says an ancient race called the Tuang created the culture of the Mandolre, and though they went extinct, their ways live on through multiple species. But now this whole debacle with the the EU no longer being canon, erases that no? I read the history of Star Wars Rebel Mandalore, and it kinda seems the same. However the Tuang seem to be gone, and the entire Mandalore race was started by humans. Keep in mind I haven't seen Rebels, just read stuff from a wiki. Perhaps one of you fine Star Wars fans can set me straight?

Do the Tuang still exist in Star Wars mythos, or are they gone?

Yeah, i think Disney should keep making Legends stories, continuing the old expanded universe, even if only in a much more limited capacity, like 2 or 3 novels to tie up certain loose ends, and another continuous project showing the continuing developments in post-RotJ life.
Yes that would be nice.

The Taung are now Legends unfortunately.

And Legends is the "non-canon" works?

Just a heads up, Dark Horse is apparently having a massive sale on digital Star Wars comics.

Legends is formerly the EU which has now all been scrapped. The biggest tragedy in Star Wars since the release of the prequels.

I disagree. Scrapping the vast majority of the Expanded Universe was a necessary tragedy. While there is some great stuff in the EU, a lot of it needed to be scrapped in order to pave way for the new direction the franchise is taking, particularly in the post-ROTJ era.

Now I think that Disney should have kept some of the EU works that Lucas either had a hand or personally approved of like Splinter of the Mind's Eye, the Force Unleashed, and Shadows of the Empire, but almost all of it needed to go.

Splinter of the Mind's Eye isn't have a snowball's chance in Hell of being kept by Disney. It was written as a possible low budget sequel to Star Wars 1977 in the event that film wasn't a success. But with SW1977 being a success Splinter wasn't used for the sequel. It's a neat what-if, but it shouldn't have been kept as canon. And keeping Splinter and The Force Unleashed and Shadows of the Empire also might have stepped on Disney's toes. Disney wants to keep as many options open as possible. They want to fill gaps themselves. Ditching all the old EU besides TCW and Episodes 1-6 was best way to ensure that they can do just that. And they still have the option to use elements from the old EU so all they've really done is free up the field at the outset rather than running into a wall down the road and having to work around something.

The Force Unleashed realy couldn't be kept, the main character in there was immensely overpowered, and while intruiguing enough, the plot was nothing to write home about.

I'm curious as to why Star Wars canon is above DC and Marvel canon? What makes the original EU so special? Especially when the books weren't considered G-Canon and George just took what he liked and added it in? Furthermore, unless you grew up on pre-retcon DC and Marvel then none of your favorite superhero stuff is &"real" by that logic.

I'm struggling to understand why this is a big issue to some as there have been layers to Star Wars canon for years and Lucas only took what he liked from the original EU. It's not like the old EU was G-Canon. Why is what Disney is doing so wrong when Lucas only accepted certain elements of the EU anyway?

I think the biggest actual difference is that no matter what DC or Marvel do, the vast majority of things stay the same or comeback. What Disney is doing here is very different. They are erasing everything that wasn't on film (the movies and TCW), and directly replacing it. Personally, I am a big fan of this. Cause while I love a lot of the EU, there was very little good continuity, and a lot, and I mean a lot, of bad material. The idea of good, canon friendly stories set in some of the most desirable times and places sounds just too good to pass up. Basically, Lucasfilms is trying to do this right and I applaud them for that. Rebels and the new comic series kicking butt definitely helps.

As to the more realistic problem. The more hardcore Star Wars fans can be very precious about Star Wars. I know it, because I am one. The Hype has helped me mellow out in terms of the "all or nothing" approach I use to have to things like Star Wars. But that does not apply to everyone. A trip to Star Wars specific forums would give you a good idea.

There is this huge contradiction with Legends fan. On one hand they say that Disney and Lucasfilms can't erase their favorite stories. On the other hand, they say Disney and Lucasfilms are rendering all the money they spent before meaningless, because of the shift in canon. Also, expecting Lucasfilms to spend money on "finishing" Legends stories just seems illogical at this point. Rebels already had a much tighter budget then TCW. Plus, the last thing they want to do is confuse all the new kids and causal fans they will be bringing in with Rebels, comics and the new films.

I think what Disney did was necessary, but i realy don't think Marvel and DC need to be brought up as examples when a question like this gets brought up, i frankly usualy prefer when a story has its oun creator giving a beginning, middle and end, rather the never-ending retcons and reboots Marvel and DC comics are cosntantly getting.

I think they could try wraping up the Legends timeline a bit though, do a book series or even comic series in the sttyle of Infinities that clearly stated it's a different world from the current canon, you don't need to stretch it with various other spin-offs, just make a single title that slowly wraps up the old EU and gives it some closure, possibly with each storyline focusing on some era that has missing pieces. For example, you could start with a 3-6 issues storyline resolving around Luke's Death in the old EU and then, the next storyline could be some sequel to Force Unleashed 2.
