Since TDK viral marketing seems to be a success, I'm sure other movies will try the same thing. The only movies I think viral marketing would work with are those with an all ready established fan base. What other movies do you think could try this and where do you think they would go with it.

I think GI Joe could make good use of it. And Transformers 2. I'd love to see a horror movie try a viral champaign.

How can you say it's a success? We wont know if it had any impact on the movie until it's released. I don't think the viral marketing really has any effect on anyone bar the fans who spend their time on the net discussing the movie anyway. I can't see it having any impact on the general movie going public

Well, I am pretty sure the first time this was ever done was for a movie with no established fan base...AI. It was a huge game, dwarfing this one (so far) in sheer number and complexity of puzzles. Unfortunately the movie was terrible, but it did help build fan base.

What you need for this to work, more than an established fan base, is a good back story. There needs to be something compelling for people to discover. If done right, it can work really well, but it is a risk because you are counting on people discovering the game, passing it on, and maitaining interest for it to work.

what about the outsiders? The baker who was asked to bake a clown cake filled with an evidence bag? The worker at the Alamo seeing people painted like the joker? The innocent by-standers seeing signs outside of bakery's saying "Robin Bankes has been picked up?

I think the buzz generated by the campain is definitly a help to any movie as long as there are people interested enough to go the games. When the NIN campaign for his new album had all the little websites and things it pulled me into an album I would otherwise probally had not bought, so all the people that keep seeing joker clad henchmen running around major citys collecting cakes and clues and such will help I think

WB really needs to try a viral campaign for the next Harry Potter flick. It would be a worldwide success and get lots of media coverage.

I think this really helps for people like me, that are fans but not huge fans. I want to see TDK, but this definitely raises the interest level to "must see". I then will drag others that were on the fence about seeing it.

The idea isn't to get the hard core fans to the movie, but to get those people to bring others into the game, get them hooked on the story, the game, and then the movie.

Not only that, but as the game build other media outlets start to pick it up (I think I first noticed the game from an imdb link). That brings others in. People who follow the game feel invested and want to see the movie.

By success I believe its meant by the number of people involved and trying to participate. I think that it could definitely be expanded more, I wasnt apart of the AI ARG, but I think that after seeing what Batman [and Cloverfield] do next year, the viral marketing will probably catch on with a few movies willing to risk it.

we are using it for a horror film. I am a producer on a film titled Ratred: The Following. Its a horror film about a rising cult. The Executive Producer is Larry Meistrich, producer of Slingblade with Billy Bob Thorton. Since I myself am a huge batman fan we have been paying very close attention to TDK viral marketing. But ours will be much differnt, and very graphic. Also, one of our end result top prizes is going to be walk on roles as members of the cult, basically extras, but you get to be in the actual movie.

I Think Transformers had a little viral marketing on their website. Fans were suppose to find Hidden information on the Cube...something like that....I can't remember so nevermind.:(

If too many films start doing viral campaigns then they lose what makes them exciting and special. I dont want another viral campaign until Batman 3.

And Cloverfield has a Viral marketing campaign going on right now, along with the Dark Knight (though the Dark Knights campaign is better).

There's a negative side to the viral campaign, some people are put off by the whole self indulgent process altogether.

God, please no. Viral marketing is a webmaster's nightmare. We've already cut down on covering Dark Knight's marketing.

That may be true, but just look at how many new members you have on these boards....there are a whole bunch of people with join dates in Oct/Nov/Dec, I would bet that the fact that this has been a great source of information for the viral has helped that.

So wheres the info on this?

Cloverfield has done nothing but annoy me with all the secrecy since that horrible trailer came out and told you absoloutely nothing. Theres such a thing as leaving your audience in suspense and telling them jack ***t about the movie.

They definetly get two thumbs down from me.

since Larry Meistrich just started this studio in may we have yet to really hit the trades with it just yet, however you can check out some info at
www.pitchnehst.com
on that site is an article from variety worth checking out, I think were mentioned in it.

also check out nehst studios on myspace
Ratred is one of there top friends.
however the myspace page for ratred is still covering the short film that landed us the deal in the first place.
