Game of Thrones - HBO part 2

Good to hear the ratings are doing good... maybe HBO can do what they did with Deadwood and really build things up to a huge climatic season finale in season three.... THEN NOT FINISH THE SERIES!! :(

I know that writers' strike killed Deadwood... but that still pisses me off to no end!! It was one of the best shows on TV and it just disappeared because HBO couldn't justify keeping the entire cast under contract during the writers strike...so they released everyone.

Just watched this week's episode. Damn, Ned :csad:......

i thought deadwood ended because of budget reasons

It was my understanding that Deadwood ended because they couldn't keep all the actors under contract for a show and not actually have them working on that show because there were no new scripts etc... so... they released everyone from their contracts.

After some further investigation... HBO decided to not renew contracts well before the strike... that scares me even more!!!

I understand that, but by accepting the job of Hand of the King (in short the guy who runs the country with as mediocre of a monarch as Robert), he has to know he is entering a world in King's Landing where men fight without honor and trust and allegiances are always in flux. In short, he knew he was playing a game of thrones (especially when Robert was on his death bed) and instead of taking the numerous options open to him to play the game, he refused to do so--thinking his honor would protect him. His inability to accept the reality of his position is why he is in danger right now. And it's tragic because he's a better person than the ones who have him by the balls now. And given you guys' continued mumblings of how "realistic" the author is with killing off characters I'm starting to worry that Ned won't get his revenge on Cersei and Jaimie, which is really disappointing.

All true. But Lord Eddard is by nature one of the most honorable men you'll ever meet. He was to marry Rob's sister but she died but they stayed just as close as brothers. He married his elder brother's fiance Kat when his brother died (married her out of duty while Littlefinger's been trying to bang her since they were kids).

Ned's a simple man. He runs an honest, honorable kingdom in the north with a population that dwarfs most other realms yet he's able to provide for and feed all his people even through the last long winter (which was almost 20 years). His realm though mostly frozen is the largest of all the realms as well as being the warden of the north so he pretty much watches the wall for the whole kingdom. He knew it would be a tough job, but he thought that he could run a whole kingdom as a kind, benevolent lord like he already does almost a third of the continent already.

and he's been foolish to not listen to what everyone has been telling him since he got to Kings Landing....you have to get a little dirty if you want to keep peace within the realm

He's too honorable to not do what's right. I don't know if Littlefinger was being honest about his plan when Ned told him about Joffrey, but it seemed like a smarter thing to do than what he did. And later, he should have just taken up on Cersei's offer, let Joffrey rule and return to Winterfell to take care of his family and realm. Though she was probably full of it, too. He's too much of a fool to play the game let alone win it.

I was watching the opening credits on YouTube (love the music). I just noticed how the images on the rings of the sun show the events before the show. A dragon burning cities, a wolf, lion, and stag fighting a 3-headed dragon, and then stag with a larger crown on its neck with a lion (or wolf?) sitting next to it.

Yeah I got a kick out of it;

Cersie: I love my children!
Ned: You mean Jamies children I know you **** your brother and I'm telling EVERYONE!

5-minutes-later

Renley: Lets kill her and her men, right now, take Jofferee and groom him into the king he needs to be.
Ned: Nope.

5-minutes-later

Littlefinger: Lets kill Stannis, make peace with the Lanisters and help Jofferee till he's king and if he ****s up we'll throw him off the throne
Ned: Nope.

Him takeing the offer to withdraw to Winterfell is out of the question. Let his realm be seen as weak and it's lord not get justice for John Arryn, Robert, Bran. Remember, Ned has crazy balls. This guy and his buds took dow a king and stood around the throne before Robert took it. So he has no desire to rule anything but his famyly's lands and he will never shrink from a fight.

I admire Ned's courage, but in King's Landing he & his family are quite simply outnumbered, so even if he is indeed fearless he should've thought about his two daughters' well-being more. I like his honorable personality but he can also be described as extremely reckless without considering the consequences.

You could say that and I agree with that among other things. One could also consider why Robert picked him. When they took down the mad king it was Robert, John, Ned and Jamie. John was his first Hand, his next logical choice is Ned, otherwise he would sort of have to pick Jamie ...and we all know the Lannisters. He would be one Baratheon in a nest to Lannisters when he already owes them so much money. His own Kingdom is far away and in the hands of Stannis. Think how close Casterly Rock is to Kings Landing compared. When John was Hand the Vale and his own troops were close, as is Winterfell ... relative close, makes troop movement easy.

Oh I can't wait till the game gets real deep.

lol, this cracks me up because it is so true. I really think that after Ned found out about Gendry and Joffery, and made those bold proclamations against the Lannisters he knew he was a dead man walking. The scene where he stands up from the Iron Throne, he is filled with emotion and shakes at what his actions are going to bring.

This show is going to be really tough to watch when we have scenes with that little jerk (King) Joffery sitting on the throne. <puke>

Considering how John Arynn was disposed off by the Lannisters even as the King's Hand, Ned Stark was walking into a landmine field, and he probably knew what consequences his action would provoke if he went after the Lannisters. King Robert was the only reason why he was still safe, and even Robert was reluctant to really peeve off the family that gave him so much money in the kingdom. I was expecting events to degenerate but I didn't know it'd be this quick.

You have no idea. You gotta read that whole series ... or what is out up to now.

i always pictured Stannis as mind numbingly boring/stoic but dutiful.....you have to get someone who can make boring watchable

I'm reading hte book but I'm progressing at a very slow rate, mainly because I can only read it at night and after the kids are sleeping, and by that time I'm also tired and only have a few hours of sleep before getting up for work. I'm going to try to at least get pass ep 5 in the book before the week is over though. I also doubt I'll be able to stop once I get pass ep 7-8 in the book.

Btw, I just discovered fansites devoted to George R.R. Martin's book series, but the forums are full of spoilers from the books. Oh well.

I like Stannis. He is all the warrior and soldier a Baratheon should be, but he's not a drunk, he actually channels his greatness.

Just saw the last ep.

Bean is simply 'the man' in this show. Every time i see him i think "there's 004 from Goldeneye".

I hope this show does well, some award time.

I'm wondering if they'll ever show the White-walkers again, are they'll always just be a thing of myth?
