Game of Thrones

With that said it's on HBO...so there's going to be plenty of gratuitous sex and violence (ever watched True Blood or Boardwalk Empire?), but it is for adults. I think it will stay classy and not devolve to the level of exploitation that True Blood has or straight-up pornography like Spartacus on Starz. But it is certainly meant for adults and looks like an overall classy production.

Being lazy, I read a synopsis of the first book on Wikipedia. I feel bad for spoiling myself, but it was interesting. I also read up some on the Borgias and....if that show makes it to the later years it will probably win the "most ****ed up" award, but for a TV series....Game of Thrones shows A LOT of potential if even wikipedia is any indication.

That's exactly what it is. You'd be very hard-pressed to find a more adult fantasy story than this, imo. The only pretty-boys in this story are a**holes (or worse). And with all the characters and intricate storylines, I have yet to come across anything approaching an angsty romance in the book.
That sounds great :yay:
I'm mostly annoyed that the fantasy realm of tv-series are only really for kids/teenagers nowadays so that's why I am (read: was) worried. I can only think of like 2 series that have taken themselves serious and not fooled around with the stuff I mentioned; the chzeck The Witcher and Robin of Sherwood. Every other fantasyseries have knowned it was a fantasy and therefore catered to younger audiences by either being silly and stupid or cramming it full of sex and stuff...

Shoulda read the book, that summary is not exactly accurate except in the most broad strokes. There is a lot more to it than that and I would recommend everyone read it.

It's gonna get real packed in here in a few weeks with people rushing in, asking questions and offering opinions on what happens next ... yet never read them.

I've actually never heard about the Borgias or the TV show that is making about them, but I'm going to find out more about this and see if it'll be interesting. I'm definitely looking forward to Game of Thrones, and I hope it'll be as edgy as True Blood or Boardwalk Empire.

If you want a fantasy series that is suitable for kids and teenagers, you won't be getting them from cable networks like HBO, Showtime, and Starz. However, thanks to the wonder of the Internet and Netflix, you can get series from other countries like UK, which have their own family-friendly Marlin series, so you can check it out. I for one am glad to see adult-oriented shows and hope there will be more on the way.

No I dont. I think you misunderstood. I'm happy that the fantasy genre has, with this series, grown up :)

I would defiantly argue that Starz is for kids... well, ok, not youngsters, but horny teenagers anyways...

Spartacus is on Starz, and I don't think it is made for horny teenagers.

I don't know about good, but teens sure love them. 300 + Late Night Cinemax sounds like it'd be a hit with 14-17 year old boys to me.

you know...I hate it when people associate "adult" with sex and violence. what, it's only adult if it has those two things in it? Really? Sounds more juvenile to me.

If you think blood, gore, and mutilation in addition to full frontal and sex scenes are good for teenagers...
Blood gore violence and sex is the very definition of teenager...

There's hardly any "gratuitious" sex in this.
Aside from a few handmaidens getting randy.
Most of it has meaning to the story and or consequences for the characters involved. The same goes for magic and violence. At least in the books that's the way it is.

Has anyone in here even watched all of Spartacus? I mean, seriously- I tuned out of that show after the first episode because it was such trash- nothing but sex and stylized violence ala 300- like you said, 300 meets skinemax. But after hearing that it improved I got caught up and started watching week for week about halfway through. By the end of the first season the show took home the "most improved ****ing series ever in the history of the earth" award, where the writing, acting, violence, and even the crazy hot sex were all top notch and for the sake of the story. I'd easily put the last 5 or 6 episodes on par with the quality of Rome(which is my favorite show).

I've seen the whole series and own it on Blu-ray.
It definitely takes some time for the story to pick up. Once it hits the Pit episode, I think that's where I got really interested.

I watched the first two episodes when it started a year ago. I thought it was complete trash as well. Then after the series ended I saw people raving about how good it got and watched the rest of it on Starz's demand thingy.

It did improve. But I would not compare it to Rome. It was still incredibly trashy. It is just the plots became very melodramatic and soap opera-ish. They were told with enough urgency that it was compelling to watch....but it is still a show based around gratuitous gore and softcore porn. I didn't bother watching the second season this year.

I have the first season of Spartacus and I'm watching the Gods of the Arena season streaming on Netflix, and imo it is a terrific series. The very first episode of season one wasn't the greatest, but the story settled down afterward and really delivered later on, so I'd advise anyone who started on Spartacus to keep watching. However, if you are put off by scenes of blood and debauchery, then Spartacus may not be the series for you.

The Lindelof/Martin Fued right now is pretty hilarious. Oh, LOST...

This series looks damn amazing, the first 14 minutes were solid and gorgeous looking. I plan on watching for sure, but am more interested in reading the books now.

Oh yeah that was hilarious, as much as I like George he shouldn't use Lost as an example of f-ing up an ending. You should definitely start reading the books if you have the time, it's pretty damn compelling.

I just read that the credit sequence, panning across an interactive-looking map of Westeros, will change as different courts rise and fall and gain importance, over the course of the season.

Must admit to not reading the novels (for obvious reasons) but I just saw the 15-minute preview on OnDemand and I'm now definitely pumped for this series. to Mr. Martin and  to HBO for the production quality, I think I might have found my new favorite show come the 17th

Excellent, I agree, it's going to be a great show and if you have to time to read the novels please do, you won't regret it.

Yeah all the glowing reviews of the first 6 episodes is a good sign. They haven't seen anything yet, especially if this goes to season 3.

God yes, the Red Wedding. :wow:

And that's just scratching the surface.

The Battle of King's Landing, the fight with the Other with Sam, The sacking of Astapor. So many amazing scenes that NEED to be filmed!
