Sci-Fi Gareth Edwards's Jurassic World Rebirth

Really good box office run that should see it around 850m WW. Crazy after Dominion seemed to destroy all goodwill. Folks really seem to dig it. I'm thinking the secret screenings skewed the Cinemascore.

Definitely didn't collapse like you would expect a B to do. Although it is a question of how big the OW would have been, and thus how much that second weekend drop would have been if it had opened in a traditional way.

And it was done without Imax

DELETED SCENES
  • RAPTORS

Intriguing.

No alternate ending though? We know
Ali died during his sacrifice
before that was changed cause of test audiences.

I bought a new projector and I think this is gonna be my first proper new watch.

The raptor scene should have been kept in. Not because it has substance or necessary, but just to get them a little more screentime that didn't involve someone taking a piss the whole time they were on screen. :o

Well I finally saw this and I believe my original assumption was true. I think Gareth Edwards came way late into the process (David Leitch was at one point in talks too) and he wasn't given much creative freedom. His eye for directing is still there (there are some great sequences and visual moments for sure) but I don't believe for a second this is the movie he would've done if he had been involved from the very start.

Finally saw it and I loved it, simple adventure story, likable characters, and spectacular action sequences in a stunning location, a great time at the movies. 👍

I really liked Zora, Scarlett played her with a sense of fun and humour, but an obvious heart underneath the cynical front and amongst the loss she'd suffered, and I thought the Delgado family were great, they added an everyday human element.

All of the action sequences were fantastic, I especially loved the Mosaurus sequence, and the raft sequence with the T-Rex, which I believe is from the original novel. Even the scene where they get the Titanosaur blood was beautifully effective, as Zora and Henry are struck by the wonder of what they are seeing. I also thought the D-Rex worked, that thing was the most terrifying beast we've seen in a Jurassic movie.

It was nice to have a beginning, middle and an end with a good message, but hopefully there's a sequel.🤞

9/10

Curious how much David Leitch contributed stayed in the movie before he walked over “creative differences”.

There are some action scenes with the humor that feel within his wheelhouse.

Given the timeline, 0%. He likely walked because he wanted to make changes, to make it more "his". This was a journeyman director gig. Which is also why the film likely didn't look as good as you would expect from Gareth Edwards.

Gotta say, I'm feeling a lot kinder toward this movie on rewatch. The complaints I had are all still there - wonky pacing, idiotic premise (including an all-time dumb opening scene), dodgy CGI, too much time with the family, completely pointless Mutant Dino Big Bad, the directing totally fell flat in a few parts, ScarJo not really convincing as her character - BUT in spite of all of that, I appreciate how much this feels like a Jurassic PARK movie over a World movie. The way it's shot, the simplicity is charming, and these characters, while not particularly interesting, don't at all grate on me like the other ones from the other World movies always did. Even ScarJo not being convincing was still relatively likable, especially when compared to Pratt and Howard in that first JWorld movie. I liked the trio of her, Ali and Bailey. They didn't seem like over-written characters trying so hard to be entertaining/charming. They were just fairly low-key people who were cool enough to hang out with for a couple of hours. And that's a BIG factor for me in these movies, ngl. There's also definitely a fun adventure spirit that creeps in at times that's been missing from this franchise for ages for me.

I'll never argue it's a great movie or even a particularly good one, but I think not only is it easily my favorite Jurassic World movie, but it might be my favorite Jurassic sequel to date. Low bar to be sure, but it's not nothing lol.

I think fatigue is a problem that's only going to hit harder on every sequel regardless of how they stand on their own. Watching Rebirth there were just so many of those eyeroll "we're doing this again?" moments and if this was earlier in the franchise it might not be a problem but because we've gone through these things so many times it gets tiresome.

The Jurassic franchise is like a band that had a masterpiece debut album and then everything since has just been diminishing returns and a desperation of trying to hit that level again. The quiet scene with the Titanosaurus made to fill you with wonder had the same energy and impact to me of a 6th album single that tries to sound like the classic hit song from the debut album that everyone loved.

When you remember ScarJo became famous when she showed off her sheer panties at 17 in Lost in Translation...
