Gavin Hood to direct Wolverine

He's only a guest role (he's producing the show, someone else is starring), and so far I think he's only in the first episode, which they've already shot. He'll have time. I think Fox will be coming after him with pitchforks if he didn't. :wow:
It's true - he's mostly a producer but he will have a recurring role and he's in the first episode which was filmed in March. A few weeks ago when he had a week off from filming AUSTRALIA, he was spotted back in LA at the casino where the pilot was filmed so it may be he filmed another episode. He could very easily do something like this between gigs or even with a few days off from filming a movie (like he did with AUSTRALIA - and he flew halfway around the world to do it!).

Here's Hugh as "Nicky Fontana" - he plays a sleazy casino owner. The show is a crime drama with songs sometimes thrown in a la MOULIN ROUGE or the musical episode of SCRUBS. He's singing the Rolling Stones' "Sympathy for the Devil" in the last pic.

Hmmmm, I'm with the vast majority of fans on this board who've never seen any of Hood's previous work, so I'm not sure what to think. On one hand, a fresh directorial perspective did wonders for Batman, so I'm encouraged. On the other hand, it didn't work out so well for the Hulk.

Let's hope we've got another Nolen and not another Lee here.

Thank God it wasn't Len Wiseman who got the job. Tsotsi's a cool little flick, so this could turn out to be interesting.

Great to see Oscar winning talent on this project. I'm surprised really that they went with an unknown director instead of someone more proven in the action genre like Len Wiseman.Looking at his resume he's someone you'd more expect to taken on a Magneto movie than Wolverine.

I'll need to rent Tsotsi to see first though to before i can judge what Mr.Hood can bring to the table.Everyone seems pretty positive about that movie so i look forward to watching it.
It just amazes me that they'd put this kind of talent behind this origin film--which is such a gamble as it is--yet resort to B and C-list talent for HUGE franchises like X-Men and even Fantastic Four.

I don't get the logic.
B-list talent on X-Men? On FF yes but X-Men?
Jackman already looks ready to go! By the looks of it he's better shape than he was for X3.

Yep - Hugh has been working out every day before he goes to the AUSTRALIA set. There were pictures of him coming out of the gym today too.

On another note, WOLVERINE at Comic-Con? This was on a blog:

It turns out that Fox will be in San Diego, in spite of pulling out of the drama over them pulling out of the Room H spectacle. Gavin Hood will be there for Wolverine, though it is not clear whether Hugh Jackman will get off of Baz's set long enough to come to The Con.

Oh...I didn't know. From the way they show it in the commercials they make it seem he's one of the major stars

I've never heard of him, though that's not surprising if he's not mainstream - I know nothing about directors. Be that as it may, I'm definitely willing to give Hood a chance. Besides, the decision has been made, which means they can finally start working on other aspects of the movie. Who knows, maybe Hood will bring some positive changes to the script...

Really, Sabertooth clones? I want to have some faith in the movie, but I can see that going horribly in my mind already. :wow:

Jackman handpicked this guy I'm assuming. Jackman loves the guys work and he's an exec producer.

It's called "promotion" - they want you to think he's one of the major stars so you will tune in since he's the only "name" in the cast. During the 3-hour Tony Awards they showed commercials for this 14 times! All highlighting Hugh since he's also a Broadway star. I've heard that most of the commercials airing now on CBS do concentrate more on the murder/mysterly part of the show - the other stars of the show are going to have to carry this, not Hugh since he's only a producer and only has a recurring role.

About three weeks ago Hugh had a week off from filming AUSTRALIA and he was seen in LA at the casino where this is being filmed - most of us assumed he was filming another episode. My bet is he was also there finalizing the director choice for WOLVERINE.

I really doubt its a done deal. The clone thing is so played out.

Well ive been going back and forth debating whether or not im going to be excited for this movie...because I really feel they should have an X4 instead, but this news has turned my intrests around 180 degrees.

I hope they give the movie the same feel as X1, and maybe even add something stylized like Sin City but not to the extent that it differs so much from the previous 3 Xmen movies!

Cool. Thanks for the heads up. I've been looking forward to seeing this movie for a while, and it looks like it could be pretty good. I'll be interested to see what Hood can do for Wolverine.

I dont think ill go and see this movie but i think he could do a good job with wolverine.

I'm glad they picked this sort of unknown (yet talented) director - the genre is starting to get pigeonholed, especially when we have people like Tim Story and MSJ directing.

Ratner may have an A list status is the biz, but his talents are C list at best.

So true. Quite a few critics seem to agree with that too. For example:

"Ratner since he tends to be a franchise-killer in terms of quality even if his movies still make money." Edward Douglas/ComingSoon.net

Agreed. We need more good unknowns.
