There's also news in here about other comic book movies.

Another highlight is bound to be X-Men Origins: Wolverine due out in March. After the closure of the X-Men Trilogy, there was still a massive audience enthusiasm for these characters, and the studio decided that they would proceed with a series of Origins movies. These would sketch the birth and early life of the characters up to the time that they entered Prof Xavier’s Academy and thus into the original film trilogy. They selected Wolverine and Magneto as the first two characters.

South African director Gavin Hood was picked for the job and along with his excitement about the project, he had some apprehension. When I spoke to him about his last film, Rendition, he admitted that he had been quite anxious about tackling Wolverine because it was so far removed from his more familiar social dramas.

“The thing that settled it for me was a letter from Hugh Jackman,” says Hood. “He had seen Tsotsi, and he wrote to me saying that Wolverine was not so different. It was also about a young man, still close to his childhood and deeply vulnerable, who has the potential for great violence and cruelty. Just as the character in Tsotsi allowed his emotions and impulses to protect the child that had landed in his life, so Wolverine is not an evil or naturally violent figure. He told me it was really about understanding what makes him different and using it for good. Jackman said ‘Just make Tsotsi again in this new context and you’ll be fine.’”

In addition to Jackman, the cast features Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, Liev Schreiber as Sabretooth and Dominic Monaghan as Beak. The major plot line follows the youthful rivalry between Wolverine and Sabretooth. The film was shot mainly in New Zealand, but it was drastically delayed by the US writers’ strike of 2007. At one stage the studio was close to abandoning the project, but they hung on for long enough to get it done.

The Magneto prequel is still on hold, pending the audience reaction to the first.

Wow, I did not know that.

So, if this movie goes bad, maybe people will blame Hugh Jackman for his poor judgement. :p

But this just interests me as they mentioned a "series" of Origins movies.

If Wolverine does well and Magneto does well (which it still should), I wonder where they would go from there? The New Mutants? Deadpool? Gambit? Cyclops and Jean? Maybe Uncanny X-Men? Or a Storm movie?

If Magneto's origin movie is made with $10mil then maybe it could do well

Wow, I did not know that.

I don't know how it could have been "drastically delayed by the writers's strike" since that was from November 2007-February 2008, unless they were perhaps talking about script issues, since Hugh was filming Australia from April-December 2007 so he couldn't start filming Wolverine until after that. Australia wrapped on December 21 and he only had a few weeks off before Wolverine started filming in January 2008.

Wha? I think you underestimate Magneto.

I mean, anyone who knows anything about ANYTHING X-Men related will tell you that Magneto is a Marvel comics staple, a X-Men counterpart. He is the proverbial ketchup to the X-Men mustard when it comes to adversaries.

In general, who wouldn't want to travel with the misadventures of a mutant with electromagnetic powers? :p

But seriously, I'm sure, if the movie is done right and features the kind of story, characters, and action that comic fans have been waiting to see (i.e., XOW), it'll definitely at LEAST make it's production money back.

I don't know if Goyer is the best choice for director. He has written alot of good scripts but I have yet to see a solid flick directed by him. I guess Blade Trinity would be his best.

Only thing with Gavin Hood is he has never done complicated action scenes. But the trailer looks good. So Im not worried.

Tsotsi was a great film. If Hood brings that to Wolverine, it should be a really good film.

One of the most powerful scenes in Tsotsi, for those who are curious. The movie is written and directed by Gavin Hood. Amazing, amazing film.

EDITED: inappropriate language in video

..this is what I believe. For some reason, I keep thinking of that Hannibal origin movie.. what was the name of it?

I'm sure a lot of people at 20th Century Fox thought X-Men would be boring and unprofitable too, but they underestimated the fanbase.

It was Hannibal: Rising. Bleh...I just puked.

I'm on the same page as you are with Magneto. As much as he is a staple to the X-Men so is Professor X and I don't think people would go to see Professor X movie besides...well...us.

I think the studio would have to write a pretty perfect script that would include Professor X in it as well. Frankly, I would think it is a better idea for FOX to just do an origin about the both of them. That's the only way it would make sense to me.

As for Gavin Hood doing this movie I think that Hugh Jackman's involvement was pretty huge. I would have definitely chose someone like Gavin Hood for this movie rather than a regular action director.

Wtf????X-Men boring????Your Joking right?

I am pretty sure when 20th century fox was making X-men they thought it would be the opposite of boring......

Its an Sci Fi Action type comic book so how does that translate to boring?

Especially when you have mutants like Wolverine,Storm,Cyclops and Iceman???

Not sure what you were thinking when you said that....

A Magneto film would be interesting to me and people on this website but to the general public which is the key market people would find it boring iam sorry but its the truth

Not that interested in the Magneto flick.I will see it regardless, I just want to see Deadpool and hopefully X-4 as the next installments. Wolverine in Japan would be cool too.

Fox didn't know what to think of X-Men back in the late 90's/early 2000. They thought it was a freaky idea and under-budgeted it. It turned out to be profitable and respected by audiences and critics. It's said that Rothman never liked the idea of the film to begin with; now he does, lol.

Right but thinking it might not be sucesfull and thinking it would be boring are two different things.....

I dont get the "boring" analogy .

If any director were to make a X-Men the first thing they would be doing besides the plot is discussing scenes with there powers and actions scenes...Does that sound boring?

I still can't see how a Magneto film could be boring.

Such small, spoiled, 21st century creative minds we have here in this forum, I suppose. :p

The script DOES include Professor Xavier. They meet in Israel. The screenplay is pretty good, though a few things need fixing!

.. It's said that Rothman never liked the idea of the film to begin with; now he does, lol.

I believe now he 'likes the idea' of X-Men because he's seen how profitable the franchise has been and can still be in the future. But in my opinion he still does not respect the characters, the talent that works on the movies or even the audience. And I believe that has been one of the key reasons why so many of us have been dissatisfied with so many aspects of the franchise.

The first X-Men movie was developed when Bill Mechanic was head of studio. He resigned a few weeks before the movie was released and Rothman took over. Mechanic was rumoured to have fallen out with Rupert Murdoch after a number of Fox releases underperformed, particularly Fight Club.

X-men Origins: Magneto won't be boring. He and Charlex Xavier will fight Hydra. :woot:

But i doubt it'll become a franchise, like Wolverine is heading to.

He didn't fight Hydra in the screenplay I saw, it was a Nazi 'Dr Death' figure.

It's not supposed to be a franchise, but to show how and why Erik became a baddie and how and why he fell out with Xavier to become his opposite.

Wolverine may get a second movie exploring the Japanese backstory but it looks more like it's setting up X-Men First Class.
