http://blogs.orlandosentinel.com/.shared/image.html?/photos/uncategorized/2007/10/18/wolverine Ok, so it's May, 2009, for the Wolverine movie, starring Hugh Jackman and directed by Gavin "Tsotsi/Rendition" Hood.
Liev Schreiber is in talks to join the cast.
I talked with Gavin H., who is not the first, second, third or FOURTH name to come to mind when you think of filmmakers who might do a big budget comic book character movie.
He turned it down, he says. But he figured out a way to justify trying it. And not just because of the money.
"I've got kids to put through college, sure," Hood says, laughing. "But I told them 'No, that's not really me when they asked.'
"But Hugh Jackman asked to meet me, and I told him it wasn't really my world. I don't know about comic books. And he said 'That's EXACTLY why I want you to do this. I want Tsotsi's (his Oscar-winning South African black-on-black crime melodrama) human drama, human emotions, to come into this story.'
"You think about it, this guy who is literally fighting the rage within himself, rage that pops out with his claws. That's opera, man. Grand opera. A fascinating character, too. So I took this as a way to paint a grand, operatic myth on a gigantic Hollywood canvas. We'll have to see how that works out."
My interview with Hood re: Rendition runs in a day or so.
