Gavin Hood to direct Wolverine

Does this remind anyone else of the time when they hired Matthew Vaughn to do X3? Remember? :p

-TNC

Sorta, but Vaughn's.....

Everything I had typed made it more and more apparant that it was the same thing over again. I was trying to prove that its not, but you win....

I am looooooooooving this choice. Unexpected, but great. This director choice has got me very excited for the film now.

wow not a fan of wolverine but I might give this movie a looking now that gavin hood is directing.

Sounds interesting so far....

Any idea of the direction they might go with the scrpit???
I'd love to have some weapon X storyline, the one with Barry Windsor Smith on drawings :heart::heart:

I did a short write-up *bio* of Hood, if anyone's interested:

Now that it has been announced that director Gavin Hood will be helming WOLVERINE, it’s time to answer the big question some X-Men fans may have. Who is Gavin Hood???

Born in Johannesburg, South African director Gavin Hood has worn many hats in the entertainment industry. Besides directing, he has had experience as a writer, actor, and producer.

Hood is best known for winning a Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film during the 78th Annual Academy Awards in 2005, for his film, Tsotsi. The film focused on six days in the violent life of a young Johannesburg gang leader. Besides an Oscar, the film went on to win eight other distinguished awards, worldwide.

His next film is the political thriller, Rendition (for New Line Cinema), which stars Oscar winning/nominated actors such as Reese Witherspoon, Jake Gyllenhaul, Alan Arkin and Meryl Streep.

In 2000, Variety named him as one of its ‘Ten Directors to Watch’. He’ll definitely be watched among X-Men fans this year, as he goes behind the camera for 20th Century Fox’s 2008 release, WOLVERINE!

Stay tuned to XMF, as we’ll be bringing you more information on the production (which begins filming in November) as it becomes available!

TSOTSI WAS AN GOOD FILM! I have it on DVD. I think Hood is a good director and his style impressed. However this mna has little clout, which will spell diaster with FOX at the helm. I fear this man will be there just to shoot the film and have little creative control. I'm sure his style will be seen, but that doesn't matter if the script is garbage or has issues. Well actually AICN is reporting that the script has problems and has been turned down by a few directors already. Also AICn is reporting that the Wolverine film wil be?..................... DRUM ROLL PLEASE.......... A GOT D@MN STORY FOCUSING ON LOGAN'S ORGIN?? Sweet Jesus you have got to be freaking kidding me! Wolvie's orgin has already been explained enough in the Xfilms. They don't need anything dealing with his orgin. Now I'll accept some flashback scenes, but dear lord nothing not an orgin story. Wolverine has had some great stories before joining the Xmen, and since it's supposed to be a prequel or before him joining the Xmen, then he has a rich history to do a story. Then who is surprised by FOX. I'm not looking foward to this. I hate FOX. They gutted the X franchise in X3 and now wants to focus on a solo Wolverine flick, thinking it will bring in Xmen level money cuase they don't want to fork over the money for the actors. The sad thing is them bastards at FOX will hold on the the X rites instead of giving them back to Marvel.

Seems a good choice

Lets get him started on 'Magneto' after he's done Wolverine :D

I hope FOX dont have any input what-so-ever.

Awesome, I've never heard of this guy. Which, sadly, means he'll probably be a lot better than if they had picked someone that I actually knew about.

Man, despite the fact that I am completely against an X-Men 4, I am even moreso against spinoffs, and wish this announcement was for an X-Men 4, and not for Wolverine.

I really despise the idea of spinoffs.

wow! But Hood is...y'know...a good choice. Whats fox doing getting decent directors? If they're not careful, they make just make a decent film!

I'm quite pleased actually. My interest in this film has risen slightly

Interesting choice indeed. We'll see how this develops.

O Thank God! There Is Actually A Chance Now That Wolverine Will Be Good...lolol...
Unless Hollywood does The Hollywood Magic* on him.

*AKA Fck him in the ass like all other foreign directors. (Examples: Del Toro/Mimic, Hirschbiegel/The Invasion)

WOLVERINE SLIPS ON A HOOD
07.20.07
By Jeremy Smith
Contributing sources: Variety, Brian Henne

For today, Tom Rothman, we are cool.

I don't know if this was a Rothman decision or more of a Hugh Jackman/Lauren Shuler Donner move. Doesn't really matter. Whoever's responsible, they done good. Gavin Hood is a great director who's about ready to make a leap to the A-list this fall with Rendition, a politically-charged thriller starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Reese Witherspoon, Peter Sarsgaard and Meryl Streep. Prior to that, he directed Tsotsi, which I considered the best film of 2005. I really like this guy.

That he'd use the clout of Rendition to land a big studio project like Wolverine is curious; I didn't know Hood was a comic book kind of guy. There isn't much action in Tsotsi, so Fox (or Donner and Jackman) must've really liked what they saw in Rendition to entrust the fate of the spun-off X-Men franchise with a director who's thus far specialized in morality plays. The only quote to go on belongs to Jackman, who tells Variety, "I have long been a fan of Gavin's work and know he will make a masterful film with the character intensity and action beats the fans expect."

Hood also brings a good deal of writing expertise to Wolverine, so there's a chance he might take a pass at David Benioff's draft (which isn't quite there yet). Clearly, Hood understands the career benefits of doing "one for them"; let's just hope he can use Wolverine to get more intimate, less commercial stuff done. The South African filmmaker has already adapted Athol Fugard once; I'd love to see him do a big-screen adaptation of Sizwe Banzi is Dead or Master Harold and the Boys.

For those of you unfamiliar with the Wolverine story, it's an origin tale drawing from Barry Windsor Smith's Weapon X series.

WOLVERINE gets an interesting director...

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Of all the one-shot properties out there, I think WOLVERINE could easiest survive the break from the team. MAGNETO can be done well, but it's tougher than WOLVERINE. He's got so many great single stories to pull from, be it his time in Japan or his Canadian adventures or his war stuff.

However, I've heard nothing but bad things about the script. It's been offered and turned down more times than Courtney Love.

But what gives me hope is that they've attached a really intriguing director. A man by the name of Gavin Hood is directing. You may have seen his amazing film TSOTSI. Pretty intriguing that he's on this film. I hope David Benioff's script has improved, but then again... I haven't read it myself, so it could be just misunderstood. It does surround Wolverine's origins, which is a little worn as a plot point already... and one that seemingly was set up in the X-MEN films to have a resolution in that franchise. Hrmm...

Fascinating choice on this one. I hope we get a kick-ass WOLVERINE movie. Hugh Jackman back, Hood directing... two checkmarks in the "doin' it right" column so far...

I would have preferred Len Wiseman, but what's done is done. I guess we'll have to see how this fleshes out with this Hood guy.

I was initially very excited by this announcement, as, though i havent seen it, i've heard nothing but good things about Tsotsi.

Then i remembered, the director doesnt have much clout, and Fox is the studio. So they are DEFINATELY gonna meddle with it. Expect an 90 minute action movie with little to no substance.

I cant tell you how glad I am that a Fellow South African is getting a chance to Direct this movie.

Never heard of Gavin Hood and haven't seen any of his work before but from what I've read about him so far he sounds like a great choice for director. I may have to go check out Tsotsi now...

Tsotsi is one of my favorite movies and it one an Oscar for best foreign film in 2005. I have no doubt Gavin can make a great Wolverine movie.

Right now the biggest concern is the script. AICN is saying it's crap.

Seems to be a great choice, I'm surprised with it, but an important issue is the script too. The director can be amazing, but if a script is bad, the film will be bad too.

Anyway, I think I won't be seeing this movie in the theathre, because I don't want to participate in the success of this spin-off. I'm sure the boxoffice won't be bigger than the xfilms, but still don't want to give my money to Fox for a Logan movie, when he was the star of three films.

But surely I'll see it on DVD or something.

Well, at least they are moving forward with this film. I wonder when they plan to release this in 2008. I mean, shooting in November and releasing in the summer would be a tight schedule, unless they are going to aim for a holiday release. Hmm.

Great choice - My interest level is now a lot higher in this project.

Never heard of him but the trailer for Tsotsi looks ok and the movie he is doing with Reese Witherspoon sounds good, interesting choice

I just hope they aren't aiming for a summer release with a November start

I would have liked Wiseman or DJ. I know DJ chose Eagle Eye but what happened to Wiseman??? I'm cool with this though. I love directors who step out and are given a chance like this.

I think Wiseman is probably prepping DH5 for Fox instead

It's an interesting choice for this film, and I like when they go the unconventional route for the directors (Sam Raimi, Christopher Nolan, Bryan Singer, Guillermo Del Toro, Ang Lee)

Definitely sounds like a more interesting choice than a Tim Story or a Louis Letterier. I´m intrigued.

^ ...drops about a month before principle photography begins and is replaced by McG? :O

Bite your tongue! :oldrazz:

Just moved Tsotsi to the top my Netflix queue. I'm very excited about this movie now!
