Wow New Line is getting quite aggresive with the futurisitic war/action films. First Escape from NY and now this. 300 has quite a bit to do with this. Good. Stuart Beattie who just finished Punisher 2 script is doing this. He's busy as all hell. Here's a few links to the story:

I can see a bunch of ex-football players and pro-wrestlers trying to get in on this one. LOL

Who should direct this? Who should be the stars???

They got the screenwriter for Black Hawk Down on board Escape from NY...maybe they should find the director of that film for this one. :) I could totally see Vin Diesel playing one of the characters in this film. Michael Clark Duncan too.

wtf? why are they making a movie about a video game that doesn't have much of a story in the first place? i love Gears of War but there was almost no story.

they tried that with House of the Dead and Street Fighter and look what happened!

Off the top of my head:

Granted he could act...which to be honest, I doubt.

LOL.

That was put in the works quick... are they cashing in on the trend while its still hot?

Like Pirates of the Caribean the ride had a story behind the ride. LOL C'mon Dorky you know how it works. They build around it. The basic premise was cool. Just imagine those settings on film. The game is so popular they can afford to hire top talent to build around this and Beattie is a solid screenwriter who actually worked on Pirates. :)

Sci-Fi is my thing so I'm all for this. The game was totally fun with stunning environments. If they can put a general story around the characters and place them in those environments...it'll be like Colonial Marines on Steroids.

It should be "hot" for sometime. The sequel is only gonna be better. In this case you have a game that sells the movie. The game was really a interactive movie it was so freaking real. Hell now I'm gonna have to go play it again. Just think 300...with guns.

This is going to be badass - can't wait! Screw novels for adaptation, video games and comic books all the way!! :woot:

Video games are an original source of material. It's not always rich in story to being with but that's what the screenwriters are for. :)

Watch Kurt Russell get the role of Fennix. The EFNY fans will crap themselves collectively.

Well Gears is what's called a "system seller". You buy an Xbox360 just for this game. Trust me.

Here's the E3 Trailer:

Here's the story description (brief) though Beattie will expand on this:

That should give you an idea of the genre, type of film it'll be, tone, characters (not fleshed out), and the environments. :)

awesome game but the only way I see this working is if Paul Verhoeven is in, and he keeps the Starship Troopers vibe.

either him or Michael Bay. I don't like the guy, but you have to admit he'd probably be the best choice to keep the ultimate macho experience from the game.

except that Street Fighter does have a story. they changed it, and look what happened!

The film itself was announced when the game came out, they just didn't have a film company to fund it.
I hope they don't get some s*** director, but knowing New Line, they won't.

Well i'm actually a Bay Fan;) and i agree this is a perfect fit for him, when i was playing it,with it's huge action set pieces and macho banter i kept thinking "this is like playing a Michael Bay movie":woot:

I loved the game so hopefully it will get a serious treatment and by that i mean a big budget and a big director/cast

For Fenix i call Bruce Willis, granted he isn't as big as Fenix is in the game but everything in it was ramped up to testosterone gills, you grew stubble just playing it:woot:Willis plays a good grizzled veteran badass IMO.

The Rock for Fenix. :whatever:
I really have no clue who should play who, because the characters were so different looking than the normal hollywood actor.

LOL.

Batista would be awesome for that role, just don't give him a lot of dialogue haha.

I really can't imagine Gears of War as a movie though...

The perfect film for Michael Bay is a Hulk film. I'm happy as hell we got Leterrier though because I think he's got a really brutal style about him and he's a bit more gritty for lack of a better word. I think Gears of War shouldn't be a bunch of giant explosions and slow motion sequences of tanks spiraling towards the screen. I want to see someone like Wayne Kramer, Ridley Scott, Tony Scott, Alex Proyas, etc...Oh hell imagine Del Toro doing this. Verehoven sounds cool at first thought but I think his style wouldn't quite fit like it did for the tongue in cheek Starship Troopers. Whowever directed Black Hawk Down...just use him. That was awesome.

no thank you. the games story was paper thing and boring (it was a game-long courier mission for gods sake)...the only thing that redeemed the game at all was the fantabulous multi-player :o

^ Yeah because the screenwriter is just going to write the lines from the game scene by scene exactly. Of course he's not gonna write a screenplay around the premise of the game how silly would that be? I look how poorly Disney did when it attempted to make a movie around a stupid amusement park ride. :whatever:

1. Disney partly got lucky, and partly refused to let the movie fail by throwing gobs of money at it.

2. Look at hollywoods track record with video game movies. These are the same people who took Resident Evil, which had a briliant, perfectly cinematic storyline, and turned it into a no-brain, hour and a half action movie. Now, think of what they'll do with a game that's entire story is "uh...mole men...and spiders...and stuff"

Good on you for admiting to being a Bay fan! I am too!

ugh don't remind me of that. Resident Evil couldn't have had a better chance of being a great zombie film and instead became a lame action flick that happens to have zombies in it.

Video games are being made with production values on the same level as films now so it's going to be much easier to turn a video game franchise into a film. It isn't like turning Space Invaders or Asteroids into a film. Some of these games have a real cool premise. It just will take time for a screenwriter to build a story around that premise and give the director enough money to make it work and hire the right talent. The fans will show up. Resident Evil could have been much better but there's only so much you're gonna get a studio to do after spending so much on the film rights. They want to attract as many people as possible. I'm glad 300 did so well. It keeps hopes alive for good R rated translations.

We got a good screenwriter to do it so again...the movie is not going to be just watching people shoot things from a first person perspective for 2 hours and then go home. It's a movie. Take some elements of Starship Troopers, Black Hawk Down, and Doom (game not the movie) and you got a winner.
