The real innovators have been the smaller games and in the indie scene for a long time.

The big publishers just want $200M-$300M (often always online, multiplayer) realistic graphics games where generally you just shoot/stab people. No real innovation there anyway - the only thing they've been 'innovating' is money grubbing tactics and business models, not gameplay.
