I'm curious how this one will go in the Chinese market. I know Donnie Yen's a big name, but the Chinese are an odd bunch when it comes to what they embrace and what they don't.

You don't delay a movie almost a year if it's any good.

Delaying a good movie for a year makes no sense. It makes no sense to put a low budget Oscar bait drama in the middle of the superhero season.

Three months before Half Blood Prince's release WB delayed it 8 months solely because TDK came out in July 2008 and it exceeded their expectations so they shifted HBP to 2009 to help with that year's bottom line. Studios shift dates and withhold films for business reasons and not always because the film is bad.

If it gets CTrev removed from IX, this is one of the few times I'll wish the movie IS bad.

Even if Colin's latest film is bad it's unlikely to result in Colin being fired from IX. He'd need to pull a Trank on set and have a summer tentpole film bomb horribly. If Colin is going to leave IX it will likely be due to scheduling conflicts or actual creative differences.

Well, then, I'd urge Solidus to send that whiskey to Trev instead of Darth Skywalker and get the damn job done.

Maybe he'll befriend Max Landis and walk the path of self-destruction that way.

Unfortunately, he's connected with Stephen and Frank (and I don't mean the Dillanes). We're saddled with the hipster hack.

One needs to be creative in order to leave over creative differences.

The interesting thing is though that many missed from that article, is it’s screening well and the studio thinks it will garner award attention. As I’ve said before Collin has talent, not shown with Jurassic World, which was “meh”. But Safety really did impress me and show his skill. This seems to be one-upping it. Some are acting like we have Uwe Boll directing this. And the buzz around The Book of Henry has been good. I actually think he will do well with it. He has not done any travesties that would make me extremely nervous yet either. I’m excited to see what he does with The Book of Henry.

Also what is interesting about that Variety article is the fact that the company thinks it could make some money during the blockbuster season and aim towards those that don’t want action films. Interesting because every year that goes on there is hardly any time for smaller indie films to land. It used to be, most of August, September, October they had room to release. Now October recently has become a new market area for bigger films, (The Martian, next year Blade Runner 2)

January is crowded with many indie films, and now February is a new month for blockbusters, Deadpool opened the door for that now we will have The Dark Tower and Predator 3 in the next two years during those dates. I could see many of these indie studios like Focus starting to look for areas that their films may be welcome to a different subset of audiences.

Hollywood Reporter has confirmed Tony Gilroy has taken over the edit and was the driving force behind the reshoots which he directed himself. Devin Faraci is also hinting that the movie is in trouble.

While I've been convinced for a while that the movie's is a cluster**** BTS, I have to point out that Devin said the same thing about TFA and is a bit cynical (perhaps understandably so) when it comes to Star Wars.

Having said that, Kathy will need to hone her talent scouting skills a bit more if she is to keep the franchise going for a considerable amount of time.

Interesting, I wonder what Edwards did to piss them off that bad. But at least Tony is a good writer/director so I still have high hopes. As for Devin, Gia is right, he was dumping on TFA left and right with doom and gloom, I don’t think he likes SW at all. And honestly the franchise has been through rough times and survived, I still think we will be having a good batch of films.

Reading the full article from Hollywood reporter doesn't make it sound as bad as the headline. It seems it Edwards is working alongside him in a collaborative effort and it doesn't seem that there's any wall of division between Tony or Edwards. I still bet money that this has to do with the characters and Tony was brought in to make them pop more.

Directed a not great film? After all, that is what they hired him for. That they had to bring anyone in says a lot about Edwards' skills.

Well I meant more specifically what they were unhappy with, though I think you and I have guessed what that is. But again after reading the full article, it’s clear they want someone to help him with this, but after reading THR’s article to me it seems they are doing all this for the better and Edwards is still involved, though, seems Gilroy is taking the lead on it.

But again I don’t think all is lost. Godzilla’s problem was flat characters, everything else was good, so I’m thinking/hoping that’s what they are working on to make us love the characters like we did with the last film.

I do not think all is lost. I do think they are trying to do this for the better. But the reason they have to do this is because Edwards is not skilled enough. It is okay to say it. That doesn't mean the movie won't eventually work out.

As to Godzilla. I think the only thing that did work was Monster combat. Everything else, pacing, characters, editing, all of it was subpar. I also think it is dangerous to say, "just the characters". Because what matters more in a film then the characters?

I will disagree about the pacing, and plot etc with Godzilla I actually thought that was well done. Characters are hands down the most important part. But I did not “hate” the characters in Godzilla, nor did I love them. Again they were meh. So it worked enough to where I was not holding my nose. That and Cranston was awesome, Ken was not too bad either. So to me that’s why I enjoyed, did not think it was great, but nothing reeked bad to me, a lot of great stuff, and then the characters were not bad or good, just functional.

But again I 'm not denying, he lacks the skill of character depth/development. And I was hoping the other script writers helped him out with that. But it seems that they did not and Gilroy is hefting the emotional weight to make the characters stronger.

While I do think they didn't get good enough writers in the first place, Edwards problem might actually just be directing actors. And as Star Wars fans, we have experience with that. :cwink:

Devin thinks everything not on the MCU is in trouble. When there is nothing controversial to report pick a film out of a hat and say its in trouble. Instant page hits and tweet storms.

This is quite true.

From what I've heard, going from Godzilla to Rogue One was a bit too much for Edwards. Rogue One is still his third movie, so it makes sense to me that back to back blockbusters may have been too much for him. It would be why he dropped out of Godzilla 2. And given what I've seen of Edwards, I can easily see him letting up to let others take the reign if a movie isn't working out.

Edwards I think is a growing talent, he just needs to slow down a bit.
