Sounds strange but... Give that a watch first. It was a highly influential film on the first handful of Connery Bonds. You watch that and you can see what they were going for to a big degree with adapting Bond for the screen.

If Cary Grant's protagonist knew what the hell he was doing (and therefore the movie lost half its fun), sure.

No but seriously, the aesthetic influence is quite apparent, imo. Kinda sad that when Hitchcock got to work with the actual Bond, we got...Marnie.

I kinda also think that they knew they had to soften Bond from the books a lot and they saw that Grant's unflappable smoothness in NBNEW was a needed ingredient to an adaptation. It's not exactly the same but Grant's constant facade of not letting much of anything truly get to him for most of that film must have been something Connery saw as a useful bit to bring over to Bond.
