I think AT&T owned part of their parent company well before, but only brought them under the WB umbrella last year, presumably for the sole purpose of putting their content on HBO Max...which it was on for about 7 months before this announcement, lol.

AT&T has been buying up IP and competition for years, running it into the ground and then discarding it. That Cruchyroll survived is a miracle. Look at what they did with DirecTV. Losing millions of customers every quarter and they are mismanaging Warner Bros, and DC comics to the point there have been massive layoffs. Not to mention the billions AT&T has in debt.
