I dont want to wait a week for some Santana/Mercedes, dammit! :cmad:

exactly.

doing it for shock value would be stupid and beneath the show imo

Doing something for shock value would be beneath the show? I actually think season 2 is starting out pretty well (but if plots don't develop quickly I will lose faith we'll ever return to the quality of the Front 13 last season), but the show has turned into such a piece of market synergy for Fox and the record industry I wouldn't put anything past them. In two episodes we had a tribute to Britney Spears per request of her agent as well as four recent Top 40 songs appear just in time to eat up huge amounts of iTunes downloads (Empire State of Mind, Telephone, Billionaire, and The Only Exception.).

I like the show, but creative integrity is sometimes slack on this show.

Anyway, Murphy said he is tired of TV shows making a big deal out of same sex couples kissing on television and how it has to be built up to for an entire episode as if to prepare the audience.

My guess is they will do it for Kurt, as Kurt has never been kissed (not counting his short stint in the closet with Brittany) and it will fit the story. But to send up this double standard he is going to treat Britana as average a "couple" (if you can call them that) as Finn/Rachel and Puck/everybody else.

That is what I took from the interview. Which sounds refreshing after Modern Family pulled the "Episode Build up" shtick for it just last week with the two dads.

I don't mind the kids singing new hits like Empire State of Mind, Telephone, Billionaire, and The Only Exception. They are after all teenagers.

It's more realistic they'd want to sing songs like that than Queen, Journey, Elton John, etc. As long as we continue to get both (and we have.) I see virtually no issue.

Agreed; I think the show strikes a good balance between the old and the new.

BTW...Colfer said before we even got a Sam cast, that the boyfriend's name would be Sam.

Lynch said they have cast the boyfriend and that he was tall, blonde, with big pouty lips.

Ausiello said in a spoiler section that Quinn would be involved in Kurt's love life.

Sam as the boyfriend is this season's Shelby as Rachel's mom. The worst kept secret in history.

It's also worth noting that in GLAAD's list of (network-reported) LGBT characters on broadcast networks, Sam Evans was listed. Though Sam has now been removed and Blaine added.

Mercedes + Santana + River Deep, Moutain High =

Also perfect for Tina and Mike to be doing Sing! lol

Two of those (ESOM, TOE) were fairly thematically tied into the episodes (the kids want to do something contemporary, they're going to New York this year; Rachel's profession to Finn, and apparently TOE is Lea Michele's ringtone so she suggested it); the others are basically just the characters singing in contexts where what they're singing isn't that important. And it makes sense that they'd be singing contemporary popular songs.
Apparently this episode will have the Glee Club as 5 year olds. So Will might show their names on a wall with flashbacks of them being touched by Jacob. :D

"The Substitute" will be Gwyneth Paltrow's first appearance as the sub, so I'm guessing that Gwen's character was some of the kids' kindergarten teacher.

But see, as a TV show about a Glee club, yes it does make sense that they'd sing contemporary songs just for the heck of it. But realistically that should be something that you hear them practicing in the background or something. The fact that they often times devote three minutes to an actual musical number for a song that in no way furthers the plot at all is annoying. Now if they're performing it at an event or an assembly then it makes sense. But if they're performing it for the class it's just pointless.

I obviously haven't seen tonight's episode yet, but to me it looks lik every song chosen fits the plot in a certain way with the exception of "Only The Good Die Young". It looks like Puck is just singing that for the sake of singing it, and they're just including that in the episode because they need something to fill 2-3 minutes of air time.

I don't mind a balance (and I like the songs Telephone and Empire State of Mind for the record...well until the radio killed them), I'm just pointing out there really has been no balanace so far in season 2. And it is no secret the reason they're doing this so much as it increases iTunes downloads and sales. That is why Britney's agent wanted her on Glee in the first place.

Only The Good Die Young is about overcoming religious elitism or fear of potential sin (i.e. sex). Albeit, given what happened to Quinn last time, I would think she'd be a bit skeptical of this wooing.

But it kind of fits the religious themes of the episode.

I wonder at what point in time will Glee account for 25% of the music industry's revenues? :hehe:

Most of the times when a random song is sang by a character, there usually is an in show reasoning for it, it usually is relating to their episodical plot (The Boy is Mine, Puck's Ode to Sinatra, Sweet Caroline.) or they are simply auditioning (Listen, Billionaire.)

And those times are always perfect.

Not to destroy the poignancy of the moment, but seriously, a HARP player? Do you know how rare those are? They're approaching science fiction now.

The principal is scared of vampires. The shop teacher cut off both his thumbs and still came to work. But a harp player is ridiculous. :oldrazz:

Exactly. There's only so much suspension of disbelief I can take, really.

Sounds like something you need to get over as it's not out of the realm of possibility.

I'd like to see Chris Colfer sing something by Christopher Cross. One of the few male vocalists I've seen recently that can pull it off.

Good stuff overall, and should probably satisfy people who thought the last episode lost the plot too much.

Things I liked:
- Finn and Rachel, functional couple!
- Everybody's acting, especially, of course, Colfer's; this is probably his Emmy submission, and he did great work.
- Finn's subplot was enjoyable comic relief (and even managed to advance the plot, too).
- Most of the music choices worked great.
- Some good little character bits, like Quinn's pleasure that Finn found Jesus.

Quibbles:
- I thought they overplayed the belief vs. non-belief thing in the classroom. Sure, Sue stirred it up, but everybody getting so worked up about it seemed unusual (particularly since this town has often been written as semi-Bible Belt).
- Somewhat relatedly, this episode really showed why I don't think it's a good idea under normal circumstances to use Sue as a serious character. Even apart from that she's been written as an extreme straw religious conservative in past episodes (her inconsistency is the most consistent thing about her, and she's the only character where that's not a problem in most cases), it's jars a lot of the time.
- "Bridge Over Troubled Water" was too short to have the effect I think it was supposed to have.
- While I appreciate that Finn's was the humourous subplot, I feel like they missed an opportunity by not touching more on how his feelings about religion relate to his own dead father.

Sue Slyvester is one of the greatest characters on tv right now.

I liked how Finn's dumb belief in Cheesus actually remained poignant while hilarious.

Good episode overall. Definitely one of my favorites (I'll probably end up re-watching it tomorrow!).

Loved:
-Finn's subplot was not only hilarious, but brought out some great moments with Emma/Kurt/Rachel. Loved his reaction to what happened to Burt.
-Papa Can You Hear me was somehow touching and hilarious all at once.
-I really thought Kurt's storyline was the one that would make me cry, and I did tear up from time to time, but it was Sue's last conversation with her sister that really got me. Just a great moment.

Meh:
- Only The Good Die Young. Seriously.. pointless. Did nothing for the storyline. I would have cut that out and extended Bridge/I Look To You/One of Us instead. Would have packed more of a punch.

Overall, I've been very satisfied with this season so far. Next week looks great too. I really want Sam with Kurt, but he and Quinn look :atp: together.
