Godzilla (2014) - Part 10

I love the slow burn to a big reveal. As long as what is happening with the humans is interesting. I'm pumped!

I haven't seen the film, so I'll refrain from talking down the hardcore reaction. Still, it might be a good sign that the worst complaint out the gate is there's not enough of the main attraction.

Less thrilled about the beating Spidey's taking. It disappoints to see so many saying "well, at least it's not Spider-Man 3."

I'm glad Godzilla doesn't overpower the film. Watching him constantly walk, roar and hit things would get boring fast. Savor it!

I think the marketing really helps with this. The lack of Godzilla in the trailers and TV spots aren't full on Godzilla action, so we both savor when Godzilla is on the screen and we are not disappointed with the lack of monster action. The fact we haven't even seen the atomic breath, or really more than a few glances of any of the monsters is just crazy when compared to other movies, who are trying to put out money shot after money shot. I think that might have been what hurt some of Pacific Rim's reception with the general public. As much as I love that film, and as great the Hong Kong sequence is, there was not a whole lot more we did not see from the trailers.

And really, we have seen zilch compared to Spider-man or X-men.

Pretty sure I just read an article that compared the new GODZILLA to JAWS and ALIEN and JURASSIC PARK in a *negative* way. What the hell?

I'm not going to link to it. But the gist was that GODZILLA is a slow burn monster movie, and that that's somehow not a good thing.

Faraci confirmed "blue fire."

Also
"There's a Mothra reference in GODZILLA - Thomas Tull says they won't talk sequel until they do well, but they love the whole universe."

Fans need to stop being so defensive about any criticisms. Just like when fans freaked about Captain America falling just below 90% on RT, ready to declare war on critics.

I hope there's a more.....tolerant audience out there that will appreciate the build up to Goji's reveal. Here's hoping there's enough of a solid plot with interesting characters to keep us engaged (Cranston apparently acts the hell out of the first 35 minutes). Plus, we got the MUTOs.

King Kong doesn't show up for damn near an hour and half in Jackson's film. I think this will do fine.

I haven't really seen much of an uproar, more confusion about how being comparable to stone cold classics is supposed to be a criticism.

Didn't a lot of people say the first half of King Kong dragged?

Perhaps the comment is being misinterpreted. Or perhaps the person that made the comment believed this movie was not as good as the "stone cold classics" he or she was comparing it to.

Also redhawk23, I just see a lot of fans for this movie acting like devoted groupies and will not accept any type of criticism against it. That's how it is starting to come off.

And to be clear, on one hand I get it. We are all fans and fervent for something. The trailers for this movie have been very impressive. A lot of us feel cheated by the 1998 and this movie looks like the exact opposite.

I'll be the one to say it... I haven't seen the film, but there is a possibility that a film that has been built up with trailers that showcase such large scale action to herald the return of a legendary icon (especially to Non-Japanese audiences) yet doesn't seem to match the expectations of the trailers could leave some cold or disappointed. I am a huge defender of MOS, but I'd be blind to not at least see that the trailers did seem to build the film up in some viewer's minds to such an extent that the film could never compete with the hypothetical film of their expectations.

Go to the ASM2 board for plenty of that.

The problem with fanbases is they're so hyped up by marketing departments and the big wait that by the time the object of their desire drops, anything contrary to their own experience is thoroughly rejected, as if a poison that could taint their opinion. "Don't kill my vibe," and all that. I've come to accept it as part and parcel; the more rabid opinions become rare as time passes.

Now all that aside, I'm willing to admit even I get caught up in it sometimes, within reason. However, on the other end of it, as much as I love Winter Soldier, even I can accept those who don't find it as good as I do. One of my dear friends still thing Thor 2 is best solo Marvel film yet, because he's just enamored with Thor. Can't really kill myself arguing with him over it. To each his own and such.

But yes as Spade said, people really work themselves into a "Don't kill my vibe" mode over all the marketing sometimes. Even the Robocop reboot had plenty of cheerleaders.

Well now looks a Godzilla franchise is indeed on the table of possibility should the upcoming film hits $450 million worldwide and above. Although obviously Tull isn't hitting the "Early Go Ahead" for a sequel button unless the film succeeds in that regard.
The lawsuit and the split between Legendary and Warner Bros. are probably going to be road blocks for a sequel.

‘Godzilla’ Legal Battle Between Legendary & Tossed Producers Gets Trial Date

It’ll be almost a year to the day after the new Godzilla hits the big screen, but the long legal clash between Legendary Pictures and a trio of veteran producers dumped from the reboot now has a trial date. Despite Legendary’s efforts to keep the matter private, the parties will be arguing their case in front of a jury in LA Superior Court starting May 17, 2015. That could change if the two sides reach a settlement over credits and compensation for the Warner Bros-distributed tentpole. If that doesn’t happen, the trial, which ejected producers Roy Lee, Dan Lin and Doug Davison have been seeking since filings started flying in January 2013, is scheduled to last around 10 days.

Yes and the human characters were so boring and unlikeable that it felt longer. JP is the last big monster movie I can think of where the characters were more interesting than the FX.

I guess it depends on just how much screen time the people who mentioned Godzilla's lack of on screen time actually expected in the first place. I'd say most Godzilla fans probably get an idea of what to expect since, as mentioned before, even in the Toho produced films there's varying degrees over how quickly, and how much, we get to experience Godzilla himself.

@david_tincher Gareth Edwards did a phenomenal job of building up the fight scenes. Everything is visible and right in your face.

I bought tickets today to see it in 12 days. I am so excited! :)

I think Godzilla is gonna be good or at least decent going by the trailers. As long as it's not boring and drags like Peter Jackson's medicore King Kong. That movie is freaking 3 hours long and Kong doesn't show up until like an hour and a half into the movie.

Zod forbid we have a blockbuster where it actually wants to have suspense and development before the big reveal. What a foreign concept! :o

So true. The typical young male moviegoing audience who is used to an orgy of CGI things crashing together from start til finish of a movie might have a problem with this.

That being said, I do think that Gareth's Monsters really didn't have enough monster scenes in it to truly pay off in the end, but I always assumed that was more due to a lack of budget. I'm hoping that his "less is more" approach to Godzilla still gives us enough awe-inspiring scenes where it counts.

I'll wait to see for myself before judging but this movie is called GODZILLA so I'm going in there expecting to see a good fair amount of the main attraction. I don't mind a build up but some of these reactions are giving me a feeling that we don't get that much of him at all which would really suck and quite frankly unfair.

But, like I said, I will reserve judgement until I see it or hear more from you guys. :)

I don't want a Man of Steel half hour orgy of just two monsters punching each other. That does get old. But I certainly hope we get a few nice, non-shaky cam views of him in all his glory.
