I just came from my screening and I have to say...it could have been better.
Don't let me get you down, maybe I'm in the minority in this.
I agree with a lot of the criticisms that has been thrown around regarding story and characters. They just never fully come together in an interesting or entertaining way. The story moved along because it had to. Also I agree with some people that have said [BLACKOUT]it was a mistake to cut away from the first fight. In fact they turned it into a joke, which would be fine if we had actually seen it.[/BLACKOUT]
Yeah, one of the soldiers went "Did you see that?"Ok. I don't think anyone answered me earlier.
In the movie, is the military/people shocked when Godzilla unleashes his...
Atomic Breathe? Or is everybody like "Oh ****, it lights up and does that.
Yeah, one of the soldiers went "Did you see that?"
I had a great time watching this show. It was pretty great show. It started rough and I had no idea what was going on, but then plot moved on smoother and everything was pretty fast paced, not much dull moment.
Of course I noticed the "cockblock", it did get rather annoying. IMO, they should at least show more of the second fight. Still, it's not gamebreaking for me.
The characters are rather ok, serviceable and got the plot moving. Ken Watanabe has that dull look on his face every time he's on screen, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson's character is flat. I found his storyline to be unintentional hilarious though. He's like everywhere, went to one location, monster attacks, his team wiped up except him, moved on to another location, repeat.
The monster on monster actions were top notched, even though I felt that there were too much human action cuts in between. MUTO looks great, so did the Big G. My only complaint about the monsters is that Godzilla got the short end of the stick, in term of plot significant. For a movie called Godzilla, his presence is rather minimal. MUTO got some important background story and development, while Godzilla only has Watanabe's "Force of nature to restore balance". He's just there to beat MUTO, the end. I was hoping Godzilla to have more story elements.
Despite my complaints, this is a very solid film and well worth watching. Will be watching again in Imax 3D soon.
9/10
I don't see how your score matches up with your review.
I'm glad you liked it. The reviews have definitely got my initial expectations built by the trailers way down but I'm still expecting to enjoy it. I'm expecting something in the range of "okay to "good"
If what I've read is true, I can't give anymore credit than that to a film that hangs everything on the last 20 minutes.
Quick Spoilery Question
Does Godzilla die in the film or in what way does he leave? Hard to imagine the film ends with him still in San Fran
He collapses in the city after the battle making us think he died, which he obviously didn't. But then he wakes up and with one final roar before going back out into the water. Its funny because he must have crushed a good amount of people from standing up and heading to the shore, but people looked on in awe with some cheering.
Only in this day and age do majority raves still have people expecting to be disappointed.
