I just came from my screening and I have to say...it could have been better.

Don't let me get you down, maybe I'm in the minority in this.

I agree with a lot of the criticisms that has been thrown around regarding story and characters. They just never fully come together in an interesting or entertaining way. The story moved along because it had to. Also I agree with some people that have said [BLACKOUT]it was a mistake to cut away from the first fight. In fact they turned it into a joke, which would be fine if we had actually seen it.[/BLACKOUT]

Yea it sounds like they're valid complaints, I just can't say for sure if they will bother me that much or not. I was hoping the human element would be engaging, because it seemed like it from the trailers, but a lot of people haven't been liking it too much. I'm definitely still hyped for it though, and I can't wait to see that final battle!

Just saw it. It is indeed a good film. However it is also indeed underwhelming. The less is more approach in this day and age is admirable, but they took it a tad too far.

Great review by Chris Stuckman loved it despite having done of the same criticism although he says he still liked atj in the movie cites 2nd act as the weak act for reasons we've read -A

I actually think Aaron Taylor Johnnson did about as well as anyone could in the role he was given.

Yeah his character wasn't that well written. Cranston should have been the lead. I'm not just saying that due to his hype train. His character was simply much more interesting. I did think that Ken Watanabe was really good though as was David Strathairn.

I'm seeing this Friday. Really excited

Ok. I don't think anyone answered me earlier.

In the movie, is the military/people shocked when Godzilla unleashes his...

Atomic Breathe? Or is everybody like "Oh ****, it lights up and does that.
Yeah, one of the soldiers went "Did you see that?"

I had a great time watching this show. It was pretty great. It started rough and I had no idea what was going on, but then plot moved on smoother and everything was pretty fast paced, not much dull moment.

Of course I noticed the "cockblock", it did get rather annoying. IMO, they should at least show more of the second fight. Still, it's not gamebreaking for me.

The characters are rather ok, serviceable and got the plot moving. Ken Watanabe has that dull look on his face every time he's on screen, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson's character is flat. I found his storyline to be unintentional hilarious though. He's like everywhere, went to one location, monster attacks, his team wiped up except him, moved on to another location, repeat.

The monster on monster actions were top notched, even though I felt that there were too much human action cuts in between. MUTO looks great, so did the Big G. My only complaint about the monsters is that Godzilla got the short end of the stick, in term of plot significant. For a movie called Godzilla, his presence is rather minimal. MUTO got some important background story and development, while Godzilla only has Watanabe's "Force of nature to restore balance". He's just there to beat MUTO, the end. I was hoping Godzilla to have more story elements.

Despite my complaints, this is a very solid film and well worth watching. Will be watching again in Imax 3D soon.

And Godzilla's final attack is one awesome HOLY **** moment.

8.5/10

I don't see how your score matches up with your review.

Revised it to 8.5 after some considerations.

And I find it easier to list out the problems I have with the film than what I like about it. All I know is that I really enjoyed it. My rating is more like my level of enjoyment.

I'm glad you liked it. The reviews have definitely got my initial expectations built by the trailers way down but I'm still expecting to enjoy it. I'm expecting something in the range of "okay to "good"

If what I've read is true, I can't give anymore credit than that to a film that hangs everything on the last 20 minutes.

Quick Spoilery Question

Does Godzilla die in the film or in what way does he leave? Hard to imagine the film ends with him still in San Fran

Only in this day and age do majority raves still have people expecting to be disappointed.

He collapses in the city after the battle making us think he died, which he obviously didn't. But then he wakes up and with one final roar before going back out into the water. Its funny because he must have crushed a good amount of people from standing up and heading to the shore, but people looked on in awe with some cheering.

LOL, it was all "OMGWTF" then "Yaaaaaay!"

I haven't seen the film yet, but I can't help but feel people expected something different.

Who cares if the script didn't have anything for the characters to "do" during the third act? That's kind of the point of Godzilla, thematically: Mankind experiencing these things and being able to do f-k-all about it but watch it happen and get the ever loving hell out of the way. I can't comment on Taylor-Johnson's acting yet so I won't.

On to Edwards teasing the audience too much before letting stuff fly...eh, again what were you expecting? It was stated way in advance that he was going to a less-is-more approach and I for one fully expected the narrative to tease for most of the runtime until the third act. I understand getting a little miffed and hell, maybe while I'm watching it I'll say "well dammit! That isn't fair!!!" But having the knowledge that Edwards was going to hold back until the last possible moment makes me expect nothing less.

Did you people honestly expect a 2hr monster mash and not something more akin the original Gojira? Which I might add, really only has one true scene of Godzilla destruction in it. You only glimpse Godzilla in that film briefly here and there before his rampage in Tokyo and a quick power line scene. I think his screentime is only 15 minutes or so and yet it's still considered the best film of this long running series.

I get wanting to see the monster all time in all it's glory, but there is no denying that the less is more approach is usually the most well done. Jaws being the perfect example. The first two Alien films also fit the mold. Aliens is a long film, even longer with the fan favorite Directors Cut and you only really ever see the Aliens in quick bursts. The shot barely ever really lingers on the creatures for any significant amount of time until the Queen shows up at the end. Yet Aliens is considered a classic sci-fi/action/horror film. I'd say in a 2.5 hour film the Aliens maybe have 15-18 minutes of screentime maybe. MAYBE 20 if I'm being generous-Queen and all.

Jurassic Park, isn't there less than 20 minutes of dinosaurs in that whole film?

I know it's all about execution, but I can't help but think some people were expecting something they shouldn't have with this one even when everything was spelled out for them from the get-go.
