Is this thread going to become another meltdown battlefield ala TASM2 boards?

Nah, because you don't need to argue about Godzilla movie rights reverting somewhere else. ;)

No reason it should be. More people are liking it then not. I didn't dislike either, just thought it could have been better.

So far at 78% on rotten tomatoes that's not bad 119 reviews counted I think it will hold more or less there.

Just to be clear, I liked the movie. It's very well directed. It looks great.

I just think the acting and some of the choices they made kept it from being even better or close to being an all-time classic.

I think 78% rating is pretty fair really.

Yeah I liked this but didn't love it. Cranston was wasted. He was great and didn't get nearly enough screen-time.

no IMAX posters they are giving away right? I am going to the 7pm showing.

The trailers only gave me two worries:

1- That the MUTOs were only for Godzilla to have a match, and the film would possibly have been better if focusing only on Godzilla

2- The military guy that looked kinda generic and bland. Seems like this worry is coming true.

Just got back from watching Godzilla (in pointless 3D) and what surprised me most was that it's not a re-imagining, or a Nolan-esque attempt to remake Godzilla from the ground up as believable as possible. No, this new Godzilla is very much like the old ones - specifically, let's say 1991's Godzilla vs King Ghidorah - mixed with the ground level perspective of Spielberg's War of the Worlds.

The new Godzilla is very, very much the work of a fan.

Going into spoiler territory....I was also surprised how much Godzilla was portrayed as a full-on hero.

1. They contribute to the overall storyline, they're not just there for the sake of it. Godzilla's purpose in the movie requires them to be there, let's say. And they are pretty awesome and scary.

2. Yeah, sad to say very generic. But passable.

Well one could say Godzilla was only there so the MUTO's could have a match. :o

Finally found the artbook at a barnes and noble and they're selling it for $45 :cmad: amazon it is.

It wasn't exactly that they weren't going to be well incorporated into the story, but from the trailer it seems like they're taking some of the focus and the film could have been more interesting if it was more of a remake to the original Gojira, with Godzilla as the main cause of the destruction and mankind trying to figure out how to stop him. In the trailers that's one of the main elements, that's why when i see the MUTOs starting to appear i get the idea that it may have been a missed oportunity.

Not enough Godzilla in the movie. His total screen time is about 15mins for the whole of the movie, including the fight scenes. On the other hand the Muto had way too much screen time. I'm not pleased.

I don't disagree with you per se....this film goes in a different direction and suceeds. But I admit I did think a straight-up, Godzilla rampage film may have been a better idea to start a series.

There's supposed to be one I thought.

I thought he was in the movie for as long as he needed to be, though you are right in saying the other monsters had just as much screentime.

Well, Godzilla is a hero in this, therefore he can't fight humanity and there needs to be other monsters.

See in several other iterations, Godzilla fights other monsters but is only the lesser of humanity's problems, he is indifferent rather than malevolent.

There's different ways to play that story.

Its not that Godzilla necessarily needed more screentime (Though it wouldn't have hurt) but rather better screen time. The ending of course has some, great, great moments, but prior to that most of Godzilla's appearances are fake out introductions or him falling over.
