the movie was pretty good, but sorely lacking in godzilla. and then every time he was about to do some cool godzilla stuff, you'd get excited that s**t is finally gonna go down and then it would cut away from it. WTF? i get doing that maybe once or twice to build the tension, but by the fourth time they did it i was like "f*** you, i wanna see godzilla smash some s**t up and fight these guys!" i mean, thats what a godzilla movie is. even the final fight where you finally got to see stuff they kept intercutting it with other stuff happening elsewhere. but the few moments where you do get to see godzilla do stuff it was awesome.

but still, godzilla was sorely marginalized. the dude and his family were the main characters (ok, fine), then the muto's were the secondary characters driving the plot...and then godzilla was just sort of a means to an end.

It's obvious that this version of Godzilla is one of the more intelligent versions, not just a mindless beast. He has a goal and doesn't just attack **** for ****'s sake. There is collateral damage, but mostly unintentional.

Agreed with Mowtown, except it wasn't a good movie. Couldve went straight to the scifi channel

While I would have been happy with more Godzilla, I was fine with what we got. Part of the reason his scenes were so awesome was because he wasn't over used; every-time he shows up on a screen it's a "F*** YEAH!" moment.

I also don't understand that the MUTO's driving the plot as a negative complaint. How is that different from Joker or John Doe or Sauron? The villains often drive the plot, but that doesn't mean that suddenly the protagonist is meaningless or useless or not the main character.

Because Godzilla, the supposed main character of the movie is just a plot devide to stop the mutos.

Also Joker is a creation caused by Batman's presence.

One of the main comparisons was to Jaws; the shark drives the plot entirely yet the three men are clearly the main characters. Why is there no complaining that they are only 'reactionary'?

Because the movie titled Jaws circles around Jaws, the three men are effected by the Shark, the characters in Godzilla are effected by Mutos, even Godzilla himself.

I was super SUPER hyped for this as I love me some Big G but some of the things here make me question it. Based on the trailers I really thought Godzilla was on a "rampage" so to speak as per the original but now these MUTO things being responsible makes me wonder. Also the lack of Big G screentime is kind of a downer. Oh well I'll still see it and have a nerdgasm when I see the new design I'm sure.

Easter egg:
"Mothra" writen on the moth's glass cage in the boy's room and an opened cocoon...

Best moments:

Winged MUTOS breaking free,
All of the final fight,
All three bridges scenes: on the airport tram, carrying the bombs, and the golden gate.

Worst moments:

The 4 FOUR FOUR!!!!!!! M%##%%er fu)€((#%r times they teased us with a fight just to cut to a bullcrap scene.

WTF:

Here honey, I brought you a nuclear bomb, you know... For the kids!!! (Tender moment)

Our human hero graduated from the batman school of surviving nuclear weapons.

Nuclear bombs and heavy artillery don't damage Godzilla nor the mutos, but buildings rebar on the other hand...

"Hero of the city"
Wait what???

This monsters are incredibly stealthy...

Hmm. I fail to see how the creature that saves the day does not affect the course of events. Just like Batman is a plot device to stop the Joker, and so on. Every single element of a movie is a plot device. Every main character in a movie is a plot device. Why is that a complaint?
And he's a goddamned dinosaur, was he supposed to have an emotional arc?

I'm reading the complaints and issues with the film and it seems like it's coming from a bunch of people who expected to see Godzilla fighting for two straight hours, which IS something that would be sent straight to the sci-fi channel. And the human aspect of the story was perfectly fine for a movie that is about giant monsters destroying cities.

I haven't had so much fun in a theater in a long, long time. I could not wipe a smile off of my face the entire film and I'm 23 years old.

I know there are a lot of people who have perfectly valid criticisms of the film, but whenever I read anyone saying the film didn't have enough action and that it was 'boring' because of that, its pretty depressing. The buildup for me made that final fight so much more satisfying and suspenseful than if they had been doing the same thing for the previous hour. It worked perfectly for me. I can only imagine if the original Jurassic Park was released today people would be losing their minds over the fact that the T Rex has all of 5 minutes of screen time.

And regardless of his screen time, this film had SO much action and destruction, I cannot possibly comprehend how someone could find the film dull.

No, they had a goal. They did not go through any emotional progression at all, just like Godzilla. They are just as much of a plot device as Godzilla.

They show tenderness, then sadness and rage...

I loved the buildup to all of the Godzilla screentime, and I feel like the director and we the audience had earned everything we got to see Godzilla do.

Four?!!

From what others were saying I thought it was just two major moments. I have no problem with them wanting to build anticipation to finally see him in all his glory at the end, but doing that four times is just overkill.

I'm seeing it tonight at 7 and I'm not going in with negative thoughts. I just think 4 times is a bit much.

See, normally we would be all "joe average and his all i care about is action as opposed to story", but this time.....man, I think they were right.

I saw it last night and I don't think there are anywhere near 4 big teases, two at the most.

The movie is still tremendously awesome, tho...

Depend on wha you consider a tease, between 2 to 4 of them.

I don't even really count the cutaway when the shelter doors close, because that fight is pretty much ongoing for the rest of the movie.

I liked it, but it had a lot of problems.

I didn't find the lack of Godzilla a problem. Yeah the continious teasing of fights was annoying, but really there was only so much they could do with the monsters. As the last battle showed there wasn't much variety. I really liked the final fight, but it being cloaked in darkness was a bit of a letdown. Made it a bit hard to see at times.

That being said, it had nothing on the Pacific Rim brawls. Those were far more visually interesting and actually viewable.

The film's biggest problem is thin human characters, clunky dialogue, and overly sentimental moments, like all the times they try to "humanize" Godzilla. There is also the laughably bad things like Godzilla passing out alongside Ford, the Mutos apparently being invisible half the time and the "King of Monsters" news crap.

That all being said, the film's greatest strength by far is Godzilla. His look is fantastic, even if he looks more adorable then fierce. I rather he had been a force of nature as opposed to the People's Champion, but the roar and breath made up for that.

All in all, I liked it, but I feel like this will be a highlight blu-ray more then a film I watch all the way through again.

Yeah, I'm still definitely excited to see this tonight. Some of the other complaints I've been reading won't bother me all that much, especially looking back and comparing this to the TOHO films.
