You should've seen me after 'One Missed Call' or 'Rise of the Sliver Surfer'.
Dude, why would you have gone to see the cell phone movie?

I watched it on TV. The TV was replaced soon after.

I'm glad to read about the "midnight screening" numbers. I hope this movie is successful at the box office (especially domestically). This movie definitely opens the door for sequels. The potential is HIGH for this franchise, in my opinion (even if some didn't enjoy this movie, but I did, so I digress).
What a disappointment. The first 10-15 minutes is pretty good and builds tension and then it's all downhill from there once the main character is introduced. In fact every character other than Cranston's was so sleepy-eyed and uninteresting it was infectious. I actually nodded off for a minute and the weird thing is the last movie I fell asleep on in theaters was GZ'98. I waited and waited for one of these characters to do or say something interesting and it just never happened. It was a chore to watch these people. By the time Godzilla stop being teased and unceremoniously entered the picture for the final battle I already knew at that point I wouldn't be seeing this movie again. No way in hell can I sit through those characters for a second time with such little payoff. The action didn't even make up for it. The final battle kept constantly cutting away to these dull cardboard cutout humans.
And Godzilla, not sure what to make of him. He looked good, sounded good, moved good (from what little I saw) but the story isn't really about him and he's just there. He's not a force of nature, doesn't seem to be a threat to mankind, not a destroyer of worlds. He'sthe savior of our city?![]()
Hat's off to the marketing committee of Godzilla. You guys did your job and you did it very well but it didn't really deliver on anything that was advertised. I'll be surprised if this movie doesn't drop by a good 65-70% at the box office next weekend.
That's pretty impressive.
Don't know how the audience was in other theatres but I noticed a significant difference in the age of the audience at my thusrday showing compared to other blockbusters. It was filled mostly with an older audience rather then the usual 18-35 year olds.
Wow, mine was opposite. TONS of little kids and their parents. Was surprised to see so many young ones in there.
The problem is no one would be complaining about the build up if the characters we cut to were interesting or compelling. "I can't wait to see Godzilla" is anticipation. "I don't want to go back to these boring characters and their inane storyline" is another.
Looks like it could challenge for $100m this weekend. A very reliable poster with access to the actual box office data on the Box Office forums is saying $35-38m for Friday. That is much, much bigger than anyone expected.

You'd usually expect the sequel to be much more front loaded but I don't think Spidey sequels will work quite like traditional sequels going forward. It's a great midnight figure for Godzilla at any rate. That includes Thursday previews, which were 9.3m. That would make Friday 25.7-28.7. That would mean mid 80's to low 90's
For a comparison, TASM2 did 8.7m in it's Thursday previews for a total of 35.17m Friday and a weekend total of 91.6m
Godzilla's early estimates are very close to what TASM2 did, doing a bit better or worse will depend on how front loaded it is and word of mouth.
Someone with more knowledge might know this. From what I understand Toho has pretty strict guidelines when it comes to Godzilla, my question is how the hell did they approve the design of '98 Godzilla which looked nothing like the character?

I thought it was a good film for the most part. Disappointed with not seeing more of Cranston's character that was a total waste. This monster definitely reminded me of classic Godzilla unlike the Iguana thing in 98. This film got that beat as far as Im concerned. I didn't like most of the human characters in this film especially the son. I was cool with the gradual buildup of Godzilla. I figured the main battle would take place later.
I would give this film 7 out of 10. Its got some parts that just drag. The 98 Iguana film and his babies running around the basketball court doesn't even compare with this one.
