Massive opening for it. Estimates are 35-38m for Friday (that includes the 9.3m from Thursday previews).

I watched it on TV. The TV was replaced soon after.

:funny:

One more hour and I get to see if this movie is as bad as some are making it out to be. I'm kind of glad I've read all these comments because now my expectations have dropped so there's less of a chance that I'll be let down.

What a disappointment. The first 10-15 minutes is pretty good and builds tension and then it's all downhill from there once the main character is introduced. In fact every character other than Cranston's was so sleepy-eyed and uninteresting it was infectious. I actually nodded off for a minute and the weird thing is the last movie I fell asleep on in theaters was GZ'98. I waited and waited for one of these characters to do or say something interesting and it just never happened. It was a chore to watch these people. By the time Godzilla stop being teased and unceremoniously entered the picture for the final battle I already knew at that point I wouldn't be seeing this movie again. No way in hell can I sit through those characters for a second time with such little payoff. The action didn't even make up for it. The final battle kept constantly cutting away to these dull cardboard cutout humans.

And Godzilla, not sure what to make of him. He looked good, sounded good, moved good (from what little I saw) but the story isn't really about him and he's just there. He's not a force of nature, doesn't seem to be a threat to mankind, not a destroyer of worlds. He's
the savior of our city?
:barf:

Hat's off to the marketing committee of Godzilla. You guys did your job and you did it very well but it didn't really deliver on anything that was advertised. I'll be surprised if this movie doesn't drop by a good 65-70% at the box office next weekend.

I'm glad to read about the "midnight screening" numbers. I hope this movie is successful at the box office (especially domestically). This movie definitely opens the door for sequels. The potential is HIGH for this franchise, in my opinion (even if some didn't enjoy this movie, but I did, so I digress).

Bah, if it's successful, that means that more companies will be willing to release the old Godzilla movies on Blue-ray. I really want to upgrade my Godzilla movie collection from VHS.

Though, I would love to see a sequel. Edwards has mentioned Destroy All Monsters a lot...

The marketing was pretty solid. All of best lines in the trailer from Bryan Cranston over nicely shot footage.

Too bad Cranston's character died. I was invested in that character.

Looks like it could challenge for $100m this weekend. A very reliable poster with access to the actual box office data on the Box Office forums is saying $35-38m for Friday. That is much, much bigger than anyone expected.

That's pretty impressive.

Don't know how the audience was in other theatres but I noticed a significant difference in the age of the audience at my thusrday showing compared to other blockbusters. It was filled mostly with an older audience rather then the usual 18-35 year olds.

I thought it was a good film for the most part. Disappointed with not seeing more of Cranston's character that was a total waste. This monster definitely reminded me of classic Godzilla unlike the Iguana thing in 98. This film got that beat as far as Im concerned. I didn't like most of the human characters in this film especially the son. I was cool with the gradual buildup of Godzilla. I figured the main battle would take place later.

I would give this film 7 out of 10. Its got some parts that just drag. The 98 Iguana film and his babies running around the basketball court doesn't even compare with this one.

Wow, mine was opposite. TONS of little kids and their parents. Was surprised to see so many young ones in there.

Someone with more knowledge might know this. From what I understand Toho has pretty strict guidelines when it comes to Godzilla, my question is how the hell did they approve the design of '98 Godzilla which looked nothing like the character?

Yeah, there wasn't one kid in my theatre. Interesting. Think this thing is hitting a pretty universal audience over all. More so then I thought at least.

The problem is no one would be complaining about the build up if the characters we cut to were interesting or compelling. "I can't wait to see Godzilla" is anticipation. "I don't want to go back to these boring characters and their inane storyline" is another.

100% this.

I dont hate this movie, I gave it 7/10, but it could have been a lot better than it was if it gave us a compelling and engaging time with the human characters while Godzilla was away.

Gareth had the best intentions with the less is more approach ala Jaws, Jurassic Park, and Alien, but he forgot why those movies were awesome despite limited screen time from the creatures.

Still, Godzilla made my jaw drop every appearance, Cranson made me tear up a bunch of times, the MUTOs were scary as hell, so I give it 7/10.

Wow, this film is going to be huge!

I hope it does $100m for OW! And I hope it gets good word of mouth. We need more Godzilla movies. I know Edwards will give us a better movie next time. It aint a disaster like 1998, its actually good but not great.

That includes Thursday previews, which were 9.3m. That would make Friday 25.7-28.7. That would mean mid 80's to low 90's

For a comparison, TASM2 did 8.7m in it's Thursday previews for a total of 35.17m Friday and a weekend total of 91.6m

Godzilla's early estimates are very close to what TASM2 did, doing a bit better or worse will depend on how front loaded it is and word of mouth.

You'd usually expect the sequel to be much more front loaded but I don't think Spidey sequels will work quite like traditional sequels going forward. It's a great midnight figure for Godzilla at any rate.

I remember reading somewhere they weren't allowed to use the classic design for some legal reason. He was only Godzilla by name.

They made him more aerodynamic thus moving fast.

Wow I'm yet to see the film but really am surprised by comments in this thread. It seems like the more you know about the film before hand the more you like it.

From what I have heard, Roland & Emmerich and/or Sony would've made it so expensive for Toho to not go along with their plans, that Toho was basically forced to accept the 98 film.

That's on par with CA and Spider-man... If it's 38m that's the biggest OD of the year! So, we should at least see a 90m+ weekend. That's great news.

I agree, and the first encounter at the airport was kind of disappointing to a certain point, why show it on the tv in the back round(the fight), but not just show it all together.

Godzilla looked like he could fight, though when he got tag teamed he went down fast. The tail whip was priceless, and atomic breath wasn't too bad. I also, think they made it plausible for more monsters in the future with how they explained the monsters. Did anyone else notice Godzilla had gills ???
