As for the complaints about Godzilla "being a hero" in this one. He doesn't give a **** about humans. Plain and simple. He's an animal hunting a bigger game and that bigger game were the MUTOs. Him being a full-on hero would've been solidified if he turned around, looked back at the humans, roared, and then went back to the ocean.

There's still an off chance he could attack humans in a future sequel. I take Goji's portrayal in this movie as a mix of Gamera in the 90s Gamera trilogy, Godzilla in the original film, later Showa/Heisei films, and Mothra in the original Mothra film.
You say he's no hero, yet you compare him to Gamera ;) .

He did kind of do a final roar for the humans, with American fighter jets soaring around him in the background. It just gave the impression of him being this hero-like character.

My review (kinda rambling but oh well)

Let me get this out the way, it was jaw dropping incredible. Not since Jurassic Park (or The Mist in some spots) that a movie gave me a great deal of fear and thrill to see a monster movie. Ever since Gareth Edwards was announced to direct, I knew he was going to share the same qualities from Monsters like relying on a great build up and it so worked for Godzilla. You can see Frank Darabont's revisions of the story in a few scenes which was always great to see. The cast did a great job, everyone Cranston to Watanabe to especially Elizabeth Olsen did well. As for Godzilla himself, I didn't mind the tease and build up, I actually loved it. As I said earlier it worked, you get a huge payoff at the end and it was glorious. I thought the destruction was more tragic and menacing than all of Pacific Rim. They really being in the fear of a horror film, as it should be. If there's any problems I had, it was maybe one of the battle scenes that kinda cuts away. They did it earlier but it worked within the context of the film but that one could've and should have been longer. I saw this at a IMAX and the sound was impeccable, even if the 3D didn't really work, the sound quality was like no other. It was like being in D-Box for free. I really want to see this again soon and at a IMAX.
9/10

9/10 for me. Admit, Bros family could have been more interesting but I was invested in them. I like all the characters and acting. ATJ was just fine IMO. But man, Godzilla and the MUTOs were fantastic! No if only I didn't have a headache while watching this (and I wish I was more than four rows away from the screen.

This movie was AWESOME!!! The king of the monsters is back!!! My verdict 10/10

Is it true there was an after credits scene that was not shown in the U.S.? I read about it and the description said it went like this
An army of flying M.U.T.O is being led by Mothra. Mothra then creates a hurricane with her wings.

I thought it was meant to be somewhat comedic, like an intentional moment that was supposed to frustrate the audience, heck the entire movie made sure to keep big G in the background during most of the film, and kept the focus on mutos vs humans. Truth is, had we got none of those scenes, the film would have been duller than dishwater, it would have served no purpose and when you finally do see him, it would be abrupt and without any build up, it would be pointless, but had you followed him throughout the movie and shown us all those fights, it would have severely lessened the impact of the final fight. Has anyone here ever actually SEEN one of these movies? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.

Oh who am i kidding, this is the generation that despises anything that isn't outright in service to them and their needs, they hate being teased or challenged, it's all we want it now now now, bigger, louder, more more more. I would have loved to have seen today's audiences react to JAWS as if it were a new movie, i can hear it now. "it's pretty ridiculous you barely get to see the shark until the last couple of minutes, you just spend time with humans!"

In Godzilla, people complain about lack of Godzilla because Aaron Johnson is boring, lifeless, and 1d in it.

In Jaws, people never complain about lack of shark because Scheider, Shaw, and Dreyfuss are as awesome as the shark. Their scenes without the shark are classics.

There's a reason I never fast forward human scenes in Jaws, and there's a reason I will fast forward human scenes in Godzilla (except Cranston's short part).

I think if Johnson's character wasn't so stock it would've worked.

Yep, If you take Cloverfield for an example, they hid the monster until the end and nobody complained. It seems like Godzilla gets the stigma, like Jaws, because it's world renowned. I think those kinds of people that don't care or pay attention about the build up or the story, they want petty things like runtime and screentime.

After that one scene with the double doors closing, some dude yelled, "I want my money back!" And it got laughter. :oldrazz:

Here we go again with...if you didn't like it, all you want is to see Godzilla the entire time.

Yeah that's the battle scene I wasn't too pleased with, it cuts away awkwardly. That one should of been a longer fight.

I still love this movie, i just hope it does well enough for a sequel so that they can learn from their "mistakes" I think Gareth is the right man for the job, this is only his second Film, and he will get better.

I complained when I actually saw the Cloverfield monster close up. He was a dufus. They should have just kept him hidden through to the credits. :woot:

Who would win in a fight?
Godzilla (2014)
Zilla (1998)
Cloverfield
King Kong (2005)

Godzilla 2014 vs Zilla would be like this. Zilla would be Bambi.

The amount of cheering at my screening today was enormous. I can't even remember the last movie that was able to rile up an audience so much. My screening was completely packed too. When I got out there was already a line forming for a screening that was over an hour away. The line was huge too.

I think it made it a little more emotional for our audience because it takes place here in the Bay Area. People cheered when the action got to Oakland and San Francisco.

I am sitting down in the cinema - trailers, etc about to start.

I'll share my thoughts here later.

I don't think the complaints for the movie are as simple as wanting more Godzilla. Like I said in my formal review, Godzilla has taken many forms in his films. This one feels more in tune with the films where Godzilla comes in halfway into the movie, and the movie focuses on the other monster (in this case, monsters). But, it didn't do it as a formal monster movie. It did it more like a disaster movie. I think that is what is divisive to many fans of Godzilla. Like I said, I thought this film showed a lot of imagination and creativity in the way it was filmed. I'm glad Gareth Edwards did what he did. But, I can see where others may not like it. To some, Godzilla should be the bad guy. To others, Godzilla should be a Pacific Rim type slugfest. To others, this was an awesome way to do it. I can see all sides.

there were no applause in m theater, but thats to be expected, since the theater i went to is not a theater that people choose to go see movies in.

yeah, I can understand the complaints and how that might have lessened the enjoyment for some viewers.

the "teases" especially. it was an interesting choice to do it that way, and I think they might have overdone it just a bit too much.

however, the final battle was so satisfying that it didn't really bother me.

that being said, if they do sequel(s), I don't think they can pull the same trick again.

I feel they made a big mistake by cutting away from Godzilla right after he shows up, and then making it almost a joke scene, where Ford's kid is watching this crazy battle on television. Maybe they were worried that the audience would grow bored with the monster fighting for so long.

That said, I also felt that the MUTOs weren't the best choice. Nothing wrong with the designs, but Godzilla's first big movie enemy should be some big name kaiju. They could still use the MUTOs, but have them be a lead up.
